Had to boot to CD run recovery and type "bootcfg /rebuild"
anyway that sort of fixes it but now I have 2 damn OS choices when the laptop boots.

Download: Windows XP (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/winxpboot.ini)( also windows 2000 installed in a folder named "Windows" ) OR Windows 2000 (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/win2kboot.ini)
+ Copy it into the root directory of your Windows drive (eg. C:\) + Rename it to "boot.ini" + Go to start, then Run and type in "msconfig" + Click on the "boot.ini" tab, and select "Check all boot paths" + There will be a series of popups for the invalid installation paths in the above files (14 if all goes to plan), and the correct settings will be placed in your boot.ini. + Remember to hit "Apply" before exiting the tool, as this will save the new settings.
Most likely, this file will contain the correct path to your windows installation somewhere there, and will be found by checking it using the msconfig tool.
I copied the file and renamed it but msconfig does not have a "boot.ini" tab.
What's the next move?
I am super lucky that I did not reboot.
open up my computer and type c:\boot.ini and see if your file opens (will see if you renamed it wrong :P)
When I copied the file and renamed it "boot.ini" The file was adding an extension ".ini" to the orignal file. It in fact was named "boot.ini.ini". I renamed the file to "boot" and then was able to do a start/run on "c:/boot.ini"
I ran the utility in ms config and the only options on the boot check were deleting lines. Was this a list of all possible paths of the operating system and I just need to delete the paths that do not work?
After deleting the lines my boot.ini is:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect
Does this look right?
I know enough about computers to be dangerous but I am far from an expert....

I have a 20gb drive for windows and a 320gb drive for EVE and other games.
I shut down my computer last night without seeing this post, it would've been bad if I lost all of my college work.

Well, I seem to have an odd problem. I too have no boot.ini file so I copied the backup and put it back in windows but msconfig is still missing the boot.ini tab!
When I boot or reboot the machine the bios warms up fine, then for about 5 seconds it just says: "Invalid or missing boot.ini Booting from c:/windows" And then works fine.... I are confuzzed?
What is the EXACT location the boot.ini file should be? It's the only thing I can think of that may be wrong........

Delete the ".backup" extension so teh file is named "boot.ini" 4. Copy your brand new shiny boot.ini to your root directory. (in most cases c:\)
There was NO "boot.ini.backup" file in C:\WINDOWS\pss!
Yeah, real easy eh?

And they are going to pay the consequences for it.
Sorry, that's HIS fault that he didn't have his paper done on time. HE'S the one who decided to wait until the last minute, and HE'S the one who decided to PLAY A GAME instead of work on his paper.
I have no sympathy for anyone who loses work because of a system crash, and I guarantee his college professors won't, either.

HELP!
Look, I am a total illeterate with computer and I am getting super worried looking at all this here without understanding much about it.
So please, someone from CCP CLEARLY AND EXPLAIN SIMPLY what happened, what are the consequences of any mistakes and what to do to solve it. KEEP in mind to stay clear in your explanation and that not everyone has the technological computer knowledge you might have.
In my case, I just downloaded last night the new patch, all was fine The game started properly, I played few hours and logged off (I do not have the new graffics as it says my computer does not supoprt it, that is all. But the game worked smoothly)
What do I need to do when turning on my computer tonight?

Can't I just do a System Restore from yesterday before 04.00? (actu about 18 hours ago)
Alternatively can I just copy the backup of my boot.ini file and drop it into C:/windows/system ?

I had no way of knowing it was Eve that caused this. I only hope I can get the damn thing back up and running, as I don't have a windows install disk (bought the PC with it preinstalled)
I am pretty sure if you contact microsoft as long as you provide them with a genuine license key when you speak with them and explain the problem i am sure they will replace your copy of windows. as it is a payed for license i dont see why they wouldnt. if that fails if you have warrenty on your pc if you did not build it yourself and it came pre installed with windows who ever you bought it from should be able to fix it under warrenty.
these are just suggestions and i dont know for a fact that you can do this. i hope that helps someone. Andy.

How this got past testing? Have you sacked the person in charge of testing, or giving him a stern talking to? What the hell were you trying to do with my boot.ini in the first place?

See my solution above. I renamed the file to "boot" and not "boot.ini" Windows was not removing the old extension and when you do exactly as the instructions say, you get a file called "boot.ini.ini"
YMMV

Drop the boot.ini in your root (c:\) and you are set (if it's allready there then dont do anything since you dont have the issue). -----------------------------------------------

Some problems? Yes.
Gross boneheadedness? no..

I do understand this. I am saying that unless this was an intentional order from CCP (obviously not) it is not the company`s fault, It is the fault of the person who wrote the code, and the people that did not catch the error. Also... Is it at all possible that the malicious code was edited in from an outside source, then uploaded to all the computers via the patch? IMO this is more likely than them missing a problem as big as this.
I could intellectually kick your ass over your evolutionary comment, but I don`t get off to internet fights.

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR BOOT.INI:
You will need: Windows XP CD Hard Drive drivers in a floppy if needed (sometimes needed for SATA or RAID hard drives) Windows Administrator Privileges (possibly)BIOS Administrator Privileges
OR
Alternative boot media If using Linux, you need the ntfs drivers for writing to ntfs partitions
Microsoft method: Take affected computer, insert CD, and boot to CD. If your computer does not boot to CD, then you will need to alter your BIOS's boot order. Each BIOS is different so I can't give you step by step instructions. What you need to do is change your boot order to boot from your CD before your hard drive.
Special Hard drive instructions: When booting to your XP CD, if you watch the bottom of the screen, it will display a message briefly telling you to hit F6 if you have RAID drivers. If your hard drive requires special drivers, hit F6 now. If you wait too long, and the message goes away, you have to start over. If you do need special hard drive drivers, insert your floppy containing them now. After the CD finishes loading, follow the on screen instructions to load the hard drive drivers into memory
Once the CD has finished loading (and your hard drive drivers are loaded, if needed), hit "R" for the recovery console option. The screen will go back, and will ask you for the administrator password. Type it in, and you will be given a command prompt. Enter in the command: "bootcfg /rebuild", and follow the on screen instructions to repair your boot.ini file.
ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION: If you are saavy enough, you can boot to another Operating System, and create the boot.ini file yourself. Considering how long it takes for the XP CD to load, this might be a bit faster. To do this, load up your alternative operating system, mount your XP hard drive (if it is not, already), and create a text file on the hard drive, and name it boot.ini
I will describe the contents of the boot.ini file so that you understand what is needed for it:
Contents:
[boot loader] timeout=1 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
The first 3 lines are options for the windows bootloader, ntldr (another system critical file in the root directory of your hard drive). Timeout is how long you have to choose an option before the bootloader automatically selects the default, which is the 3rd line.
The next 2 lines are the Microsoft operating systems that you can boot to (ntldr can not boot to non-Microsoft OS's by design. Thanks alot M$). The last line describes where your Operating system is actually located.
"multi(0)" - describes the disk controller that the bootloader should use. Computers start counting at '0', instead of '1', so multi(0) means that the bootloader should use the FIRST disk controller. multi(1) means to use the SECOND disk controller. If you use a SCSI hard drive, this will be "scsi(0)" instead.
"disk(0)" - this refers to the SCSI number to use. If you use SATA or IDE/PATA, then you use "disk(0)" no matter what.
"rdisk(0)" - this refers to the hard drive number that you want to use. If using IDE/PATA, 0 means to use the Master (or primary) hard drive, and 1 means to use the Slave (or secondary) hard drive. If you use SCSI, this will always be 0 no matter what.
"partition(1)" - the partition number that the operating system is located on. Unlike the other options, we start counting at "1" here, instead of "0".
