Seconded.
Besides, remember. There is no "fix" to lag - if they try, they spend valuable money and time so that more people can squeeze into a system (which they will) and cause even more lag in the process.
Solution? Learn to fight as best you can with the current lag situation.

AFAIK, the only thing that can possibly reduce the lag is Infiniband, and that's already being developed.
Infiniband has been around for years. It's been used in film and visual effects production facilities for quite some time, on both PC and SGI systems. There's no reason CCP couldn't use this to speed up connections between network nodes, aside from price. Infiniband is very spendy. An interface card is $700 or more, and the switches start out around $10,000 for 24-ports...not a small investment. That guy with the silly name. |

while infiniband has been arround for some time, simply implementing infiniband on a server like the EVE cluser is not enough. it would be basically as slapping a W16 engine in a mini cooper chassis using only rubberband and duct tape. ---

Edited by: Tharukan Desm''ar on 13/07/2008 14:23:00 Let me just sum up the reasons to the op. They have a different team just for ambulation. The whole ambulation thing is an added bonus from the white wolf MMO in development that those technologies were made for in the first place. So it wont be taking precious man hours and people from other parts of development. It's completely optional as well so if its not your thing then you can not bother with it. I hope in the long run it will be just the start of the features that can be implemented in the future. I'm glad to see dev's adding more things as the game progresses in age. Who knows what it'll look like in the next 5 years.

Eh. I'll get out of the pod once. Check out my character's cans for a minute or two, then get back in the pod.
It's using separate resources, both in terms of developers and in terms of server resources, to anything related to the real Eve.
Does it get my motor running? No. Roleplayers scare me.
Do I complain if they add it? No. It's CCP's money, to invest as they see best for the health of the game.

They are working on fixing the game, and they are working on new content. As been said by many here, its different teams doing thoose things. Doubling the ppl working on gamefixes != dbl the speed its fixed at, the more cooks the shittier soup.
Also eve is not ccps only project, you can probably assume that ambulation code is going to be used in other games/projects, so basicly ambulation does not drain from the eve team, but it will add to eve. I'am truly looking forward to ambulation and shopping clothes, I wonder what kind of a shades they'll be offering.

CCP are aware of this, and always have been. The problem is that it's incredibly difficult to fix. At some point, hardware isn't the answer. That's already been made obvious several times in the past. CCP's problem is that when the coded their server software, they had no idea what they were doing. They have a far better idea now, and are working on fixing it, but it isn't easy. They are still working on implementing infiniband a good while after they announced they were starting on doing so, and who knows what else their thinking of trying.
CCP are doing their best to reduce lag, although I doubt they'll ever be able to remove it completely (unless EVE survives another 10 years perhaps?). However, that doesn't mean they should stop with other things. They have 300 people working for them, and not all of them can fix lag. Those people have to do something, and in this case it's the creation of Ambulation and all the other nice things that they have in the pipeline, and that takes nothing away from their efforts to improve the performance of the game.

no, your alliance (like ANY other), is responsible for attempting to get at least a 2:1 advantage in the battlefield.
not blaming you for it tho. anyone wants to win with at least losses as possible, and that's why lag will never go.
you bring 1000? they bring 2000. then you bring 2000 more for backup, and they bring more 4000 more for backup.
then the server crashes, and everyone comes and scream "OMG SEVERS SUX! FIX IT ASAP CCP!"
cool thing however, it has been like this for 5 years, and posts like yours have been popping out for, guess what, 5 years.

How about you wait till Fanfest to pass judgment? Perhaps, once you've actually seen it, you'll be able to comment on the quality and whether or not you like what you see, rather than just making assumptions about the end product, and the internal distribution of resources within CCP.

CCP fixed Lag, in fact they fixed Lag multiple times but with each fix, players brought more of people into the same system.
If you really have played since 2003, then you would know that back then even 50vs50 engagements were unplayable, now they could be played without too much lag.
Even if some miraculous server upgrades happen tomorrow, you would just bring more people into the system.
The irony about the whinepost is, that it is coming from bunch of blobbers, who needed to bring several hundred capital ships for their invasion.
Come on, did you really think the servers could handle your blob, without problems?
1/10 for Whinepost, about a problem he created himself followed by a question from me, if I can have his stuff.

I'm inclined to agree with the OP. Is ther actually any point to walking in stations? Does anyone want this? Perhaps it explains the hike in prices to play... 'Lets hire a load of programmers so we can let people walk in stations and let the playerbase absorb the additional cost.'
Ambulation is a dumb idea. If I wanna see people mooching about I'll play CoD 4... and kill them.

Yes. Me, for instance. And a whole load of other people.

Only GTCs went up in price. They did that because Euro players were buying GTCs with the weak dollar, therefore paying far less money to CCP, who weren't entirely happy about it. Subscriptions are still the same.

Ambulation is a good idea. However, I've never heard CCP say, yet, that it's aimed at hardcore 0.0 alliance members. No, they said it was aimed at more casual people, RPers, and.. well.. girls.

$700 and $10,000 is likely chump-change compared to what they've spent on the current EVE servers.

i have seem some clips of it it seems brilant yes but y have this feature wen the server might not be able to with stand it i mean the server lags/breaks down now wait till nearly every1 is walking around a station constantly making the server load things more than ussual etc jita known as lag city it lags like mad now with 500-600+ pple init wait till every1 starts moving around stations and buying things no1 will be able to load the server or log on there will be millions of stuck petitions made laggin the server and making ccp break down with yet more stress or do u guys stress now with the money u guys earn from this new pay rise/increase on GTC payments

On the subject of lag, what I dont understand is why introduce the EA expansion that encourages fleet battles when its quite clear the game cant handle it ?? Didnt they realise that as a result there would most likely be huge blobs battling it out ?
Ive only been playing 6 months but it seems quite clear that large fleet battles dont work well in this game. Yet the game still allows the forming of huge fleets. Couldnt they just cap fleets to say 50 or 100 players ? Obviously this wouldnt prevent lag as its also down to the number of players in system, but it would prevent 200 vs 200 fleet battles. I realise that three or four 50 man fleets could work together thus effectively creating the aforementioned 200 man fleet, but i think that in Militia wars this is less likely to happen.
Dont think this would work or go down well with 0.0 fleets and alliances, but they could always just cap the Militia fleets ??
Just an idea......

EVE = Big Game Big Game = Need of Big Server Big Server = Need Maintenance and lots of people (CCP have this) Big Server = Big Fights / Big Ops etc Big Fights/ops = Fun Fun = Not walking in stations, and being able to actually PLAY the game.
Being able to play = NO LAG EVE = BIG GAME = NO LAG LAG = BAD!
0.0 blobs = Lag Lowsec Faction Warfare = Blob Blob = Lag
LAG = BAD!
See where i'm going with this?
Seriously CCP. the OP has a valid point and really ALL veteran eve players are so annoyed with the fact you keep upgrading and upgrading things we don't even need. Just again for you
LAG = BAD
EVE is a HUGE game, you advertise yourself as the biggest MMO out there, the largest in the known universe! Yet you can't sustain what you have properly. No offense, but in the future, EVE may not be the biggest MMO due to all the lag you aren't upgrading.
That's my 5 cents Peace -Buhh

THAT is not my fault.
I actually have to support Grimpak on this one, except I am going to go a bit further to the right and say it's mostly your (alliance's) fault with the current lag you are experiencing. What did you expect, to be able to bring 1000 people to a system and have everyone have two ping? You are complaining about the problem with blob warfare, yet you bring 360 capitals and 600 support to bear on one system and complain about lag.
Bottom line is if you can't handle the lag you are creating, stop bringing so many people (or at least disperse them over multiple systems to try and ease the concentration of the lag). The server can't handle it because current server technology isn't designed to be able to cope with that many people in one area all at once; you just have to give CCP time to finish implementing Infiniband to try and ease (I say ease since I don't think it's possible to get rid of all lag) the load on the servers.
tl;dr If you can't handle the lag when you bring 1000 people, which we all know is there and know is not CCP's fault, go play something else. Otherwise, shut up and play the game.

Originally by: Deverian Tarik I for one am looking forward to Ambulation immensely, and am sure that it can only add to the greatness that is EVE. And for the naysayers,
It's optional.
The server stability people are not the ambulation people, therefore any effort being put into creating ambulation is NOT detracting from any work on server stability and lag.
And if you still think it's a bad idea, please go die in a fire.
This man speaks the truth.
I still don't know why peoples still are saying omg CCP should stop making the Walking in station thing and fix lag.
Hey, haven't you learned yet that if they stop making the Walking in station they wont fix bugs and lags any faster right?.
Because those who are doing the Walking in station thing can't do ANTHING with fixing lag or bugs. So the team that are doing that are fixing that while the Walking in station team are doing that work.
And to say it for the 1 billion time probably. WALKING IN STATION IS OPTIONAL. So if you don't want to use it, THEN DON'T USE IT. SIMPLE.
Walking in station wont make any difference in the lag anyways, because it will be on a seperate server that handle the Walking in station.
