Alliance Warfare = Crap & Not Wanted
Ever since we've heard & seen this, i have spoken to alot of players concerning this waste of manhours gone into this huge waste of effort.
Every player i've spoken to, wants a stable EVE before we even think about larger scale warfare. Yet, CCP continues to ignore our request/need for stability and keeps adding new content which is currently not needed.
This last year i've seen almost all veteran players i know of, leave EVE because its boring. No one wants to fight these alliance laggwars. And eventhou Oveur, hilmar and CCP keeps praising about their 'new hardware' and 'super computers', we never get to fully enjoy the capacity that EVE could have.
I've played EVE since beta and i can honestly say that EVE is boring the crap out of me atm, and im not the only one. If it weren't for the community and all the crazy players i know, i would not play this game anymore. The only thing EVE offers at this time, is 3 things.
etc etc -

The lag with 0.0 battles IS ccp faults.. why? Because they decide the about the game mechanics. And right now, the game mechanics say: "Blobs needed to win".
Second.. I do have the same feeling EVE needs a new direction, something new to do. I hope walking around stations will be it, but it has to have a purpose.
Well, I guess we have to wait and see what Ambulation will bring.

Sure it is annoying that the servers can't keep up with the advancements in game. Who would have even dreamed of 350 capital ships in a fleet 2 years ago?
Dude, we had laggy 400 people fights in 2006 (e.g. D2 vs. Goons in XZH). CCP has had 2 years to fix the situation, much better hardware is available nowdays and what has happened? 400 people fights are still unplayable and instead of 5 minute module lag and invisible enemies you now see nothing for half an hour and then you are dead.
Noone would believe that the devs are simply too incompetent to improve the situation at all in 2 years (when even replacing the CPUs with faster ones would have helped), it's simply not what they want to invest their time and money in. They need gourmet sandwiches, huge aquariums and impressive ads instead.

Originally by: Laura Baretta If they remove lag in 1000 ship battles, there will be 10000 ship battles. It's a neverending story.
I don't think so, but I can only speak for Faction Warfare.
It takes a couple of hours to get 100 people together, by which point everyone is so bored of forming up they either suicide against the opposing blob or disband.
Lagging sensibly (couple of seconds to activate a module maybe ?) with 2 lots of 200 man fleets would fix all the FW fleet battles I have been in and then some.

They cant fix the lag.
Lolwut? I'd love to know what you base that on.
Oh, and the fact that they haven't done it doesn't count.
Even if what you say is true, why are they adding MORE content to an already taxed system? Will I have to wait 30 mins before I can walk around the station due to lag, then another 30 minutes to leave the station? It seems likely

Technological Constraints.
Not your computer nor theirs can do all the computations necessary in milliseconds. Then there is the matter of transmitting it to all the computers and getting a reply in those same milliseconds. It's just a technological barrier we cannot meet at this time.

What has always been the biggest knock on eve since the beginning? Players can't walk around w/ their avatars; it's so impersonal!
Ambulation finally brings us that!
The lag monster is here to stay folks. ANY MMO game that you play will experience lag when layers gather in large numbers. And many of you forget that Eve's cluster does a MUCH better job at holding more players than most other MMOs. 600 players in jita? Most other game servers would crash at 300. And Jita lag has improved!
Yes, lag sucks in fleet fights but stop blobbing and it wont lag. Split your fleets up and hit 3 different systems instead of sending 1000 people into the same system. Adapt and stop complaining.
And, no one knows how many resources CCP has dedicated to reducing lag. Just because people are working on ambulation, does not mean they are not working to fix the lag at the same time.
I'm excited for Ambulation. It brings even MORE depth to this incredible game, and will bring a large influx of new players!!!

I realise that my opinion doesn't matter to anyone here but I'd like to get out of my pod and stretch my legs, I'm getting quite bored of being represented as a ship the whole time and at the end of the day this is a Muhmorpuhguh so we should really have some semblance of actual character instead of just a talking ship.

Traditional HPC solutions don't work well with real time systems due to the latency of the network links (hence all the talk about infiniband, which is just a low latency network).
You do not get this lag if the processing units reside within the same box, ie with multi-core, multi processor systems.
I have a couple of 10 processor quad core 8U Rack Mount chassis at work, that is 40 processing units each. There are plenty of OS's which will allow thread synchronisation between multiple processing units which simplfies the code somewhat.
Sol uses a single thread to calculate all the combat stuff, which would be limited to the speed of one of the processing units in my 40 Cpu box, ie 2.5% of what is available. Next year no doubt we will get 16 cores per processor.
tl;dr version
You make it sound like it's not possible, which is not true. It is non trivial given the existing non threaded code base (sol). But entirely possible with todays technology (both hardware and software).

add to that the limitations of python, in wich the server/game code is build, and you have the problem right there.
the problem is not slapping a multi-core, low-latency, server cluster. the problem is slapping such system and make it work well. ---

Finally an intelligent post on the matter.
As in my opinion, EVE was much much better when it only had a cult following. This could be compared to Counter-Strike's early days, everyone respected each other, you'd play with the same people all the time. No one in the early CS days were calling anyone noobies, or they sucked. Once CS started becoming mainstream, it went downhill (in my opinion) I look at eve now and find the comparisons, local chat, and even in this thread, the players now lack respect for eachother.
I don't blame CCP for introducing new ship types, dreads, carriers, motherships or titans. Or introducing Player Own Structures. Or even factional warfare. It's part of their plan for the game, whether us older players like it or not.
