It sounds like these planet-based functions will compete with POS labs/manufacturing and outpost services. Is this correct or is the whole planet-related industry completely new including features, products and a whole new set of usable ships/modules?

Exciting developments!
At the time of PI going live, will the planets be redistributed with respect to their distance from their star to make their type (and other characteristics) correspond a little better to the possible physical conditions implied to their orbital parameters (and size, etc.)?
Please refer to this thread: [Proposal] Physically 'correct' planets. Thanks! ...

Posting that UI pic in the devblog might have been a mistake. It has raised my expectations about PI and I now expect, that the real UI will be as clear, functional and colorful as the concept art implies. The bar is now raised pretty high for the guys responsible for the PI UI.

Can we PLEASE for the love of Saint Von neumann have the possibility to build robotics, oxygen and all those pos fuel thingies on planets? I mean, seriously, the empires give away blueprints for hundred-kilometers-long spaceships that can vaporize entire continents, but "no cant have the oxygen tank blueprint its super-sikret lalala cant hear you"??

No it won't be competing with the above. The features are new, various new products are entering, but can't say about ships or modules at this time. You will have to wait and see what it all is!

Really not looking forward to yet another POS, simply planetside. More materials for the industrialist? This almost seems like a step backwards. I can see a future where building a module takes 3 days, 437 materials, 17 blueprints, just to get a single t1 mod.
Please tell me this is not the case.

This is a nice little taste of the future, and the thing that is finally making me set up an account on the test server. Some questions that spring to mind:
1. Will more than one player be able to perform planetside activites on the same planet, or will it be one planet per customer? 2. Will planetary production work in wormholes? 3. Will "PIN" structures be seeded on the market, or blueprints for structures, or both?
If you can only answer one of these, please make it question number 2. :)

1) Yes, one per customer would be kinda silly, as we wouldn't have enough planets for all of you to play with! Especially since you might be able to work on more than one planet! So yes, there will be multiple people on a planet. 2) Yes 3) The command center will be seeded on the market, other "pins" are manufactured using various future-tech on the planet's surface.

Several things: 1) Is there a limit to the number of people on a planet? 2) Is there a global space limit to a planet? 3) Is there a limit to the space an individual player can use on a planet? (command point limit, power limit, etc) 4) Is there a way to "encourage" other players off your planets? 5) What are the costs associated with performing actions on a planet? 6) If we decide to pack up and leave a planet, can we take our stuff with us? 7) How much active interaction vs. passive interaction is there? (a.k.a. shooting people is active, letting our POS do stuff while we are offline is passive) ------------------------ Peace through superior firepower: a guiding principle for uncertain times. |

But on a serious note. The blog talked a lot about PI what you can do with it. But failed to address any of those gun toting, trigger happy people and where they stand in all the PI. Do we get to shoot these things?? Is there rules like in POS warfare when shooting these things?? Small gangs? Large gangs?? Are Cap ships needed?? How does this all work for the High sec people?? Any tie-ins with the current SOV system?? Lots of questions pertaining to us violent folk.

Both are not in for this expansion, so this is in the fog of war currently.

1) There is a limit but it's high and we hope it won't be used, we have other limiting factors that should encourage people to move around. 2) In theory yes, but it's too early to discuss it, as we haven't finalized it yet. 3) Yes, there will be limiting factors. These haven't bee n implemented yet, but we are thinking about power being the limiting factor 4) Depends on what you mean by encourage, but you are going to be better off away from the crowd. 5) There will definetly be cost of running your colony, what that is is not 100% decided on so i can't go into much detail on it, other than Power. 6) The idea is that you can take the command center with you, but that is not possible on the current build, but we want people to be able to move around if things don't go your way. 7) PI is not gonna be completely passive. There are elements that are passive, but there needs to be player actions involved as things are more dynamic. Resources will deplete, storage facilities will fill up etc. It's somewhere in the middle, you can be as passive as you want or as active as you want.

Edited by: Lord FunkyMunky on 10/03/2010 17:41:56 Edited by: Lord FunkyMunky on 10/03/2010 17:39:56 i really hope theirs no per planet max amount of people, let it all be self governed if 1000 people want to grab a highsec planet let them, it'll just mean they all get crap for output and the worth of the planet drops till they all leave.
I hope theirs an upkeep or fuel to keep the structures operating, otherwise we'll get people spamming planets.
This devblog was f*cking awesome especially the fact that theirs multiple upgrades to the trade depots, and the upgradeable command center, and the fact theirs simple, medium, complex final products just makes it even more wicked!
PLEASE DONT MAKE THINGS NPC PROVIDED, DEAR GOD CCP DONT MAKE THAT MISTAKE, make command centers available via BP, make space elevators available via BP, if anything make the space elevators like outposts, expensive as all hell to build but once its their its their, also would be nice if via the trade complex we could rent our space elevator to our neighbors :)
I just really hope they put this 100% in the players hands and not be like all the d*mn pos depots that are npc provided with no blueprints, its time that all this stuff that npc's provide moved into the players, hands, from pos buildings, to skill books production, to soverignty structure production (required building in highsec via a game mechanic of course)
More in the players hands = more awesome eve experience.

How say you sir?
So, we (the designers) embrace conflict and love that part of EVE just as much as the rest of you. However, it is impossible to do everyting at once. When we started designing PI, we had some grand ideas of conflicts between players on planets. It looked extremely promising and we were reallye excited.
However, we soon realised that it was impossible to do this in the time we had so it was scoped out. We also realised that in order for people to want to fight, there had to be something to fight over. And we needed to have the industrial part working. So our focus has been on making the industrial part for now.
But hopefully we will be able to add on the conflict layer in upcoming expansions.

they said it previously, they plan for the final products to be the currently npc provided products (though they havent said how many of the npc products or specifically which ones), stuff that we cant currently produce, but their being tight lipped on it :) I'm hoping this includes skillbooks/robotics/implants (for high level producers) and maybe trade goods for the newbie players to produce...

I guess my question is.... How does the "finished good" you make on the planet interact with EVE?
It's all well and good to make "something" and sell it to someone else and they use it to make "something else" but to what end.. Is this just going to be make stuff that is used on planets only or will it eventually lead something that people will want in EVE?

2. Is planetary interaction related to T3 frigates in any way? If so how?

if the final products are npc goods, like implants and skillbooks and stuff of that nature it would be self explanitory of the "end"

Is there any estimation on the size of the command centers or PINs?
Like if they should fit in a JF, Rorq, industrial, or stuck with a freighter would be awesome.

On SISI they are currently 500m3. You can stuff a bunch in a tier 1 indy.
The pins just pop into existence on the planet after you placed the command center. |

They are currently 500m3 on sisi, but that will probably change. How much is uncertain at this point, but it won't require a freighter.

You mentioned that tyrannis development is currently focused on flushing out the industrial aspect of the expansion. May I ask if the conflict end of PI will be released in tyrannis?
And as a follow up to that question, you had mentioned that players do not need a player corp to part take in PI, then how does pvp activity pretaining to the control of planet resources occur if the targeted player is say in a NPC corp?
Mostly im curious as how these resources can be secured and controlled in highsec/lowsec, where as in 0.0 the landlord will obviously get the final say.

Yes, as the blog stated then you might be able to do simple things on one planet, but to get the best stuff, you need to trade with players from other planets, and to extend that, from other planet types. But I can't go into much detail on that.
Also, the resources and schematics and the other items you are using are for testing purposes only and do not reflect any sort of final product or values!

Not a bad idea, if you mean the actual in-game "Marines" item. Then we could finally have a use for all these useless "people" items.
Furthermore, we should definitely be able to enhance various aspects of our production facilities on planets. Want more and faster production? Send in more workers! Want even better quality? Send in those exotic dancers you've holed up in your hanger to those workers! Want to make them work faster but not be happy? Send in marines as a police force and make them work 18 hour days (assuming a 24 hour day).
There's a vast number of ways this could go, and finally giving a use to the useless people that get picked up randomly (don't forget janitors! also, use corpses as clone material to make/breed better workers!)
This is only semi-sarcastic, as I do see some real possibilities in this, but I hardly think they'd make it into the game unless CCP decided to include a sort of "Sim Planet" thing...

I say the fun bit would be to utilize all the trade goods in the Passengers list from the item database: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Item_Database:Trade_Goods
I shall fill my colony with exotic dancers and science graduates and breed a super-race of exotic dancer scientists. Gotta remember to bring janitors to clean up the mess and failures afterward.
A real question: If, in fact, we utilize actual people to staff our colonies to keep them going, would it be possible for them to get more experienced and drag them along with us from planet to planet? It'd offer a bit more permanence and offer incentive to defend assets and take good care of our minions. ------------------------ Peace through superior firepower: a guiding principle for uncertain times. |

To get the items off the planet, you need to go to it. It will be possible to view a planet remotely, possibly reduced by a skill, but in order to perform some complex actions, you need to be close to it, in the system at least.
edit: But you can do it from anywhere right now, but you need to be at the planet to set up the command center, and retrieve the rocket.

Great blog, thanks for "managing the expectation".
1. In previous Tyrannis information it was mentioned how one district could adversely effect another, such as pollution. Is this still planned for the May release of Tyrannis?
2. Sadly we will not fly down to the planets but are you changing the way in which we orbit planets?
3. Can users build up planetary infrastructure then sell it via contract or give control or create partnerships with other players in a treaty type system?
4. Will faction have any impact in this system? Example, Amarrians ship in slaves.
5. EVE Gate is making is debut with Tyrannis, can we monitor our planetary endeavors from EVE Gate? Will there be some API additions?
6. I just know I am going to get kicked in the nuts for this comment but what the heck. In the past, CCP has considered WH space as exploration and frowned on colonization. If we are interacting with the planets in WH space are we not colonizing them, thus you have changed your position? If you have changed your feeling toward WH space is it time to allow some moon mining?
Thanks again for the update, looking forward to learning more.

its not unlimited, and its only temporarily indestructable (pre-dust)
if 1000000 people drop on a planet then each person will be getting 1 unit of whatever the ore is and it will be useless and the cost to run the facility will be more than you can make from what your harvesting.

A few quick questions:
1. Will we be able to see, or interrogate, the UI to see what other players are harvesting / producing on a planet? 2. Will we be able to do the above without having a PCC in place? 3. If the above can be done, can it be done remotely: e.g from the universe or system map?
Many thanks,

THATS AN AWESOME IDEA, make PI have valuable planets in lowsec and make PINS management take 5-10 minutes, it'll be funny as hell, because people will have to try to sneak in to the planet, be within say 100km from it or something, UNCLOAKED, to manage their PINS, and since multiple people will all be trying to do management, will make for some awesome senarios of managing pins while trying to avoid the pirates that are also managing their pins LOL
they need to make sure PINS management cant be done while cloaked for true hilarity, and have a nominal distance from the planet for PI management.

1. PLEASE MAKE VIEWING possible via skills, but changing and performing actions need to be in system or at least skill based like job installation (and make this a complex skill to get, and costly)
2. rocket launches are triggered or automatic/scheduled?
3. can rockets be stolen by ninja-robbers?, wud be nice if the rocket launches would have try to reach your ship but depending on your "rocket control skill" theirs a random distance offset from you so that if you have rocket control 1 the rocket from planet will be launched randomly within 30km from your ship, to give naughty ninja bad guys a chance to grab your goodies. at rocket control V maybe only 2.5km accuracy? Some more questions, seeing as you are so kind to answer a lot of them:
1. Will PI be a steady, safe source of income for everyone or will it rather be as likely to lose money in this as it is to win?
2. Does planetary population come into this at any point, as a resource or as consumers? Or are these just mindless robotic factories ridding the planetary workforce of their jobs?
3. Will we be able to produce trade goods, reviving this neglected and currently rather pointless part of the market?
4. If we cannot displace other players from their claims, how will you prevent all good spots to be taken very soon, latecomers never to have a chance?
5. Are you certain you will be able to so strongly interfere with an already established feature at a later date as to unleash military conflict on the mass of completely carebear planetary industrialists? (Because, frankly, CCP is not known to have had the guts to turn the table on other established groups of players in the past)
Thanks in advance for any answers. :)

Are there any plans to encourage "raiding" tactics through planetary interaction, E.g.: all the stuff planet produces is stored in the silo in high orbit, if someone gets to the cylo and damages it';s structure it becomes incapped like a pos gun, and you can take the stuff from inside- steal something someone has been harvesting for the whole day.
Would something like that be possible? (not wiht a cilo, but somehow aquiring other persons good in nullsec)

I had a question: Will the inhabitants of the colony be taken into account and have morale that needs to be managed by keeping them happy and productive or forcibly in line and oppressed, like talked about at FanFest 2009?

I too wish for tobacco, spiced wine, Quaff, and exotic dancers (or alternatively Marines or Slaver Hounds) to be neccessary expenditures needed to keep factories/mines running smoothly.
I also really hope skills and implants get worked into this somehow. ===== If you go to Za'Ha'Dum I will gank you. |

1) Are standings going to play a part in PI. Ie will you need faction standings of 7 to operate in a .7 system of a certain faction? If so will this apply to NPC 0.0?
Personally I hope this is the case as it will create a larger player distribution as you will require high standings to operation in high sec, thus potentially limiting the number of people using planets in high sec. Alternatively, this will force more people into low sec if they want to be involved in Planetary Interaction and donÆt have the standings. Additionally, why would a Faction let you use planets they control if you havenÆt proved to them you are a good citizen in their space and willing to help them. Why would the Amarr Empire let people with high Minmitar standings use recourses located in their space.
2) Space elevators. Will these be attackable from space and be able to put into a seiged mode since they are in space?
To me this makes sense if you can but a space elevator into siege, thus forcing people to defend their assets.
3) Also will they be limited to how many you can have on one planet? And therefore will you be able to rent out their use?
On the issue of NPC corp members being able to take place in Planetary Interaction I say no. We want people to move from NPC corps to player run corps this is one way to do it. If you really want to let NPC corp members take place in planetary interaction at limit it eg. If you are in a Caldari NPC corp you can only interact with planets they are in Caldari space.

Well, when it comes to private investors willing to develop an undeveloped area, money talks and morality walks.
Historically speaking, some of the largest property owns have been people whose money came from highly questionable sources.

So warfare is now the domain of giant cap fleets firing at 350million HP structures for hours on end. Small mobile gangs can't do much more than harass the locals and stop them raising industrial or military indices. Now with tyrannis providing planetary interaction as a source of new resources I would be great if this could also include some targets that small groups of ships can effectively interfere with. So I'm thinking planets need to move material on and off planet so they need a small facility in orbit that acts as a staging area. These would be civillian facilities with relatively small amounts of shield and armour that can be knocked down to disable it, or repped up to restart it. However these facilities should not be something that can get destroyed (after all it would be a crime to cut off a planet's population from the rest of the universe). When these facilities are disabled by enemy wolfpacks the planet essentially stops being productive until it's repaired, again in both cases this should be a quick process.
No need for reinforcement timers or anything that is associated with serious sov warfare, this is something that a small number of enemy ships can do to 'hurt' opposing alliances.
Now, let's take it a step further, and make it possible to profit from this model, goods need to get to the station by shuttles, so have these spawn on grid in the same way that station haulers do so that pirates can go about stealing stuff from planets for personal gain. There'd need to be some level of intelligence in the spawn mechanics, the shuttles wouldn't spawn if there were known enemies (low standing/low sec status) visible on grid, but cloaky ships will still have enough firepower to kill these things. if someone kills these things then they drop trade goods that the planet is producing. Since this is attacking other player's resources this is going to flag the participants to concord and possibly give the target corporation(s) rights to shoot the pirate too.

If so, I see lowsec finally getting something that can be fought over and defended without breaking out the POS-bashing war machines. Just go shoot the guy when he tries to manage his PINs in your system.
This is the first thing I thought of as well, to serve as a first line-of-attack/defense for the PI - the need to interface proximally with your planet. For important actions, you should have to be within so many km from the planet, uncloaked. This would create all sorts of emergent behavior: pirates scouting planets for Planeteers (Captain Planet!), planet-ninjas/flippers (should follow same current rules as canflipping), planeteers creating æsafespotsÆ at around their planets, planeteer escort parties, bait planeteers, heavy passive-tank planeteer setups, space-elevator camps blockading/stealing high-profit resource pulls, etc. As you know, EVERY ROSE HAS ITS THORN. . This also makes lowsec a potentially more visited and valuable place.
Few QÆs of my own: 1)Will planets ædepleteÆ over time? Are we like Necromongers from Chronicles of riddick, going from planet to planet devouring all their resources? There should definitely be consequences to æoverminingÆ a planet û cuz eve players are HUNGRY LIKE A WOLF. 2)Will alliances/corps be able to track & tax profits/movement of goods from PI within their corp or within their sov? 3)Will we be able to name planets within our Sov? our facilities? I SO call the name ôCloud Cityö for my gas planet facility =) And I shall name the planet Bespin. 4)As this is an expansion dedicated to planets, and since youÆve already hired that there university physicist (mad props btw, that was probably my fav response so far), have you considered taking it to the next level with integration of true orbit/gravity routines [around large bodies only]?? û I know SO many players who have wished for this for years û and talk about ædynamicÆ gameplay! =)
P.S. û LOVE the UI pic, should be the icon image for planetary interaction on the neocom. P.S.S û Great job on the blog, and answering so many questions. Mad respect for you guys. P.S.S.S û TAKE ME DOWN TO PARADISE CITY WHERE THE GRASS IS GREEN AND THE GIRLS ARE PRETTY.

A low entry barrier does not mean 0 entry barrier. Limiting NPC corp members to certain areas of space does not stop them from participating it simply limits what then can do. Also It is not a huge hurdle to click the create corporation button or join another player owned corporation.
As for standings low sec and null sec shouldn't require standings to take part in planetary interaction (though I admit there are other barriers of entry in low sec and null sec, namely getting there and surviving). You can still have standing requirements that are low for lower security status system but get exponentially higher with increases in sec status. ie .5 standing for +.5; 1 standing for +.6 2 standing for +.7; 4 standing for +.8; 8 standing for +.9 systems. +1 systems in this case would either need +10 or shouldn't be available for us to us (+1 systems are home systems for the most part). In this case the barrier of entry is still low but allows more opportunity for people that put time into the game.

oh yes, i forgot that its fun to force players out of the npc corps and into low sec.
the whole point of having a low entry barrier for planetary interaction is that new players can join in without waiting 6 months for skills to train or standings increase or force them to join a player corp before they are ready to. not everyone has to be in a player corp and not everyone wants to be either ____________________________________________ Please resize your signature to the maximum allowed of 400 x 120 pixels with a maximum file size of 24000 bytes.StevieSG |

The fact that overpopulated planets will be less profitable, so hisec planetary interaction will eventually (read: once everyone and their cat gets a PCC) become as profitable as hisec mining. Plus, there'll probably be special modules/stuff you can only do on lowsec planets, anyway.

WRONG, low entry <> any entry, low entry = not Anchoring V and Corporation Management V
they already said the bar will be low to enter but it will require skills to get anywhere in it properly...
so why not place the restriction on NPC corps to highsec only and only their own states area.

In this case the barrier of entry is still low but allows more opportunity for people that put time into the game.
oh yes, i forgot that its fun to force players out of the npc corps and into low sec.
the whole point of having a low entry barrier for planetary interaction is that new players can join in without waiting 6 months for skills to train or standings increase or force them to join a player corp before they are ready to. not everyone has to be in a player corp and not everyone wants to be either
ohh snap you figured out my secret plan to A) force everyone into low sec where I can gank them and B) Go around and war dec 1 man alt corps.
(Disclaimer: I have not plan on doing either of those, A) I dont like low sec, the PvP is to restrictive and for B) its a waste of time)
You should have to invest some time in you character before you reap the benefits of every thing the games has to offer. In other words, you shouldn't be able to role a 1 day old character in your spare character slot and start creating planetary empires. Instead you should have to invest a little time into you character.

Theres probably devs working on it, a lot of balancing will come from sisi data feeds in what we do over the next 3 months so log in fiddle around affect theri data dumps and influence indirectly the outcome Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

1. Can we see other players' installations when we look at a planet in planetary interaction mode? (or even just normal "look at")
2. When we look at the PIN's and their links, will they have artwork to look like actual buildings? Or will they remain icons and symbols as they are currently? I realise this is early stages
3. Will we have atmospheric flight, to do a flyover of our facilities? :) --- Regular lotteries for all players running at http://evelink.servegame.org/igb/ |

In and strange point of view this change is in fact a nice way to deal with macro problem.
Macros provide passive income that has only to do with online time and nothing related to player decisions.
It's bad for game because not everyone can have a computer 23x7 afk mining and that creates high unbalance.
But also players need ways to produce money. Than you have to options:
1) Keep those repetitive decisionless jobs and try to punish macro players OR 2) Replace whose activities with ways of passive income independent of online-time.
If I'm right we are close to see static belts be vanished from game.

Edited by: Dante Edmundo on 11/03/2010 01:23:11 Looks like a great start. My one fear is PI is developed as too simplistic and therefore gets boring quick. I hope you guys include some of the interesting and involved lego type module complexity that you currently do for Eve Online ships - for your planetary PINS - i.e. people can plug and play with different modules that would be installable to their planetary infrastructure, and there are plenty of trade-off decisions one will be able to make. Being able to install different modules types to your planetary structures would also enrich the manufacturing market and blueprint features of Eve.
After all - you want to make this new expansion fun. And for me, fun is making it INTERESTING to play and not simplistic.

A few months back, there was a planetary blog contest. One of the ideas I proposed was to add a new tab to the current set of blueprints in Eve - that would be called say "Planetary Augmentation". Under this tab, if a player had mined and processed the right planetary resources they could build the item in the blueprint using the "Planetary Augmentation" tab. The item would then have additional bonuses added - unique to the planetary resources used. For example, if you were building a Probe and went to the "Planetary Augmentation" tab of the blueprint, if you had extracted a volcanic type substance from a molten planet - you could then use this resource to build a Probe with augmented engine power - i.e. could maybe move a little quicker or turn a little quicker etc.

Several things to consider:
1. Any new product needs to have some use and actual value in this (or another CCP) game - if products are mined, manufactured then sold to NPC buy orders for a profit etc, its all rather bad for the Eve economy - not to mention very boring.
2. Although "seeding" Command Centres may be quick and easy - please do consider allowing them (and other planetry stuff) to be manufactured by players. The markets are kinda oversupplied - eve need more buildable goods to diversif the markets (see 1. though)
3. The balancing of High/Low/Zero security PI is crucial to this working. Artificial caps similar to the numbers of rarity 64s in POS mining may seem the way to go, but you need a distribution mechanism that doesn't exclude everyone but the mega-alliances from playing this game. I'd suggest allowing all planets to make everything, then having other factors like a "workforce" efficiency mean 0.0 planets perhaps has workers pushing that little bit harder to eek out their living on their God-forsaken-rock.
4. Dont burden us with "planetry POS" in either interface or limitations. Those things are borked and a bloody nightmare. Can we have a more intuitive and manageable system?
5. How deep does the investment/emersion go? Can we be evil overlords brutally massacring the populace in a Harkonnen style bloodbath milking of Dune; or even benevolent utopia builders making a perfect world?
6. If you pump billions of ISK into one planet can you really interact with it - by Terraforming or specializing the planet and workforce making it more and more unique over time?
Many more thoughts and questions but I'm going to go listen to Duran Duran - "Save a Prayer" in the hope of more answers...

Pretty early in the timeline, but I will post it anyway just in case:
1.The sunside of the planet (blue planet) doesn't let me see the spherical harmonics well in that side.
2.The zoom is not good when setting links (better to make autozoom go back when selecting new link).
3.Setting a link when zoomed out is hard to impossible due to other links being selected instead of other facilities.
4.When zoomed out you can not see the timers and focusing on each ping to see them is annoying, make mousing over a ping launch an interface ala minority report (like in many videos you have made) showing details.
5.The automatic zoom-in is a waste of time anyways, at least for now. It adds nothing and the planet doesn't look nice at that distance (at least in the blue planet I was testing). Is there any plans to add more detail to pings so the zoom would worth it?
Other than that I like what I've seen so far. It feels a little lonely though, how will you know the presence of other players in the planet? How districts fit in what we have now?

Quote: 04:32:35 Notify You cannot begin exploiting the specified deposit. The facility's foreman does not appear to be answering his communicator, as he is likely out supervising the current deposit.
- I get this often even when the mine has exhausted the previous deposit; waiting doesn't seem to help.
- The list of links available from the screen for each PIN is nice, but we need one that is a list of routes as well.
- We need a list of PINs in tabular form, especially extractors with a column showing time to depletion.
- About half the time when I launch a rocket full of stuff, the stuff stays on the planet and the "planatart launch container" ends up empty. A side effect of this is that there is no way to get rid of the empty container or the associated entry in my journal.
- The process of removing a PIN, creating a replacement PIN, adding links, and adding routes is a bit annoying. At least one of the following needs to be true:
- The ISK cost of this process needs to be pretty low
- The ISK reward of this process needs to be pretty high
- The frequency with which this process is required needs to be reduced
But really, so far it looks good. I'm looking forward to being able to set up longer production chains, on a single planet or across several.

Will there be any form of corporate taxes integrated into the system?
Right now many 0.0 alliances have loads of unclaimed systems within "their" territory, because there is no alliance benefit to keeping TCUs up in all of them, just expenses. Unless there is a way to tax planet stuff, it looks like Tyrannis won't be adding any income streams directly to corporations or alliances either, only to individuals. Adding all the benefit to the individual while adding costs to the group seems unworkable.
Corporations should either be able to tax the planetary interactions of their members wherever they go, or be able to tax the planetary interactions of anyone they allow to use planets within their sovereign territory. It wouldn't need to be much, just enough to cover the basic sovereignty costs in an average system and give Corporations a reason to bother putting up TCUs and paying "rent" to Concord (or whoever). Of course Corporations can tax their members manually, but that involves converting more players into space accountants, a role that few enjoy.

Don't let the space shuttle fool you into thinking rockets are old fashioned, rockets are a pretty efficient and cheap way to launch things off a planet. Since the eve universe has working rail guns that could be a viable option too.
It is possible that they are just using "rockets" as shorthand for a variety of ways to launch a capsule into space to keep things simple. What would actually work best on any given planet could depend on gravity, atmosphere, temperature, education of the workforce, and various other resources. Instead of worrying about it, you have space elevators as the expensive reusable option, and "rockets" as the cheap fire and forget option.
Even in THE FUTURE space elevators would be a massive construction, there is no reason why every second rate colony world would have one, much less all the uninhabited planets. In the long run space elevators would be cheaper, but in the short run they would be ridiculously expensive.

I'm liking the direction this is taking, but I'm worried that these nodes won't have actual graphical representations.
A previous poster mentioned Mass Effect 2, and I would have to agree with this. If we can make our little patch of land LOOK really cool, as well as make money, that would be great. Being able to zoom in on buildings or cities, see cars flying around, ships going to and from buildings in orbit....
I guess what I'm getting at is a way to not only make money from these planets, but make them live & breath. I happen to really be a big fan of Civilization & Sim City, and I think I heard someone mention they were shooting for this type of thing.
Also, and I haven't gotten a chance to test this on Sisi yet, but if you're at your planet working away, are you able to be shot at and killed? You're kind've a sitting duck and a huge target for pirates and wt's.....

Ok, serious question, how will the various NPC faction standings and corp standings tie in with PI with respect to system sec status and who owns the system?
As of now, a POS requires both charters and correct NPC faction standings for 0.4-0.7 system sec and 0.0-0.3 are either done in-house by player corp/alliance or rented through an agreement.

At the moment you can manage your planet even while docked, but one of the devs mentioned that in the final version you would at least have to be in space to do it, and for some operations you would need to be both in space and near your planet. So yes, you would be a sitting duck for pirates and war targets unless they let us do it while cloaked.

I would beg to disagree. What comes to mind (without getting too techical about it) when someone mention "rockets", the general idea is that you have a propellant and the mode of action is reactive thrust. No matter how you're gonna go about it, putting hundreds of thousands on tons of payload up, day in and day out into orbit isn't going to be efficient.
I hope to see massive magnetic catapults as intermediary to the space elevator. Sufficiently lowtech in the EVE universe, but believable as a workhorse method of getting payload into orbit efficiently.
Edit : On second thoght .. hmm, infact there could be an interesting gameplay mechanic that one could design from the numerous methods of getting payload into orbit, from capital costs/max volume/time/operational costs etc perspective. So, I'll assume the devs already have this covered

What it looks like so far is that they would have to come to the planet in an industrial or other hauler to collect the products and carry them to another planet, so you should be able to track them down and pirate them in all the usual ways. I don't think there will be any new magical way to transport goods between planets.

I hope that scanning planets might be made a bit more interesting than just dropping a probe on planet.
A minigame/miniprofession for explorers would be much appreciated.

Yes it does look a bit more like a 'mini game' Space Wanderer - for example there is a scan window which you can drag across the surface of a planet. Currently on SISI that doesnt do anything but we might expect to see a type of 'read out' displaying likely places for resources.
Some pictures can be found on my latest blog on the subject here

If I am inside my ship in the space how is it supposed I will see my ass working at planet surface level?
Since the atmospheric re-entering video (long time ago) nothing new has been said about this, and with the massive proportions of the current ships and their natural lack of aerodynamical features how do you expect we swallow this pill?
Please don't tell me this will be made through some sort of magic box in which you can automatically swap over your cooooooooooooooockpit and any planet ground

I think that what we have on Sisi is very very very embrionic, so the finished product could be anything. One sure thing is that if you have to finish the industry side of planetary interaction in just less than 3 months, the mechanics can't be that complicated. I mean, if planetary interaction was developed as a "standalone game", 3 months would not be enough to create a decent product, but thanks to te fact that EVE has a lot of things to do, people will not get bored...
Anyway, I hope you will be able to create a deep gameplay with planetary interaction within 3 months. Note that "deep" does not mean "wide", which is far easier to achieve.

I have some questions:
1. Will there be a difference of Empire-, Lowsec-, WSpace & Nullsecplanets? If Empireplanets are equal to 0.0 & Lowsec & WSpace how do you want to accomplish anyone is using those planets. In WSpace you probably could never find your Colony again in your entire EvE-Time if you are unlucky. In Lowsec you are in danger if you try to "harvest" your planet. In 0.0 it could happen that you loose a war and are not able to come back to your planet ever.
2. Will it be possible to destroy your own planet-command center to start one on a different planet?
3. Will it be possible to steal goods from space-elevators of other players?
4. Are you planning to implement some automatic haulerservice from planet to stations, that can be shot by everyone like haulerspawns and traders? Would be awesome :p
5. Can i produce Quafe on my planets or is Quafe combined with Exotic Dancers making my Planets happy?

00 will be sov based so i guess if u loose sov u loose all planets, low sec hig hsec wh space well ccp have stated that colonies will require inputs as well ( livestock, oxygen , basically living supplies etc to keep the colonies working and the populations happy) turn off the supplies going in and they all die eventually and im guessing there would be some form of decay and eventual collapse and vanishing of planetary command compounds if u go afk or something for weeks.
Same goes for players that leave game after mayeb a month their colonies get turned off ? Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

Funnier part is that the super-advanced rockets evidently don't possess simple guidance enough to handle space rendezvous; when cargo launches, it just gets randomly deployed somewhere within a few thousand km of the planet rather than anywhere near your current location
I suppose it's meant to encourage PvP and/or stealing of the orbital containers, though, although the time window seems too short _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

1. Make sure that the interface is nice to deal with,
2. That the pins look good, lets get some 3d models on the surface, maybe pipes for the links or tubes or something
3. Make sure that their are racial different extractors, processors, etc with different properties would also be nice if their were t2 versions so that we have the ability to upgrade/expand and develop our networks, as i understand you want this to be something we can drop into for 15m to play with, but for those of us that like sims let us spend 1-2 hrs whenever we want to really customize and benefit from really getting into the PI.
3a. racial and size based command centers? with different Power and features?
4. please make command centers player buildable via blueprints, STOP SEEDING THINGS!!!!!!!!!!!! seed blueprints, and let us have at them ourselves, end of story.
Originally by: Krathos Morpheus 4.When zoomed out you can not see the timers and focusing on each ping to see them is annoying, make mousing over a ping launch an interface ala minority report (like in many videos you have made) showing details.
5.The automatic zoom-in is a waste of time anyways, at least for now. It adds nothing and the planet doesn't look nice at that distance (at least in the blue planet I was testing). Is there any plans to add more detail to pings so the zoom would worth it?
i totally agree with these, now if theirs going to be some nice 3d models of the buildings the auto-zoom makes sense, /me hopes theirs nice sexy 3d models for us to look at.
Originally by: Yon Krum I hope you guys end up adding an intermediate upgrade between "rockets" and "space elevator"--the linear orbital accelerator. Rockets are fine... for Minmatar! Caldari and Gallente tech needs much less inefficient mass-acceleration launchers.
Amarr needs laser-boosted payloads. Your package to heaven rising on a column of incandescent light....
I AGREE 100000000000000000%
I think rocket propelled should be extreamly inefficient and very very cheap per launch, but then i think each race should have their own intermediate version, and then the overall coveted space elevator.

1) Is there a mechanism to help you find your producing planets in the solar system, constellation, universe? 2) When you get to planetary level and lots of people working off the same planet how can you tell which installation(s) are yours? 3) What feedback do we get, if any, to say a hanger is full?
Looking forward to this developing further

The new PI system sounds like a lot of fun. But to be honest, I can't really get all that excited about it because it's still unknown what it's function is. If it's a mini game within EVE that is it's own purpose, fine. But as I gather from the hints dropped by devs, there actually is a purpose and would create goods that have a function within the rest of the EVE universe. I think that the devs need to be a little more clear about it, if only in general terms. It currently sounds like a system that has no use.
And pink elephants and the like, just don't have a place in EVE ;-)

My personal crazy speculation following some of the stuff relating to the alliance tourney is that perhaps just perhaps (and this is given the indication that the products might have a part in ship and mod production) flagships as actual ships in the game might be released and require the PI products to build. Crazy i know with part coming from claw quoting the old skill description for the flagship skill when introducing the idea of allowing each alliance to field a very expensive fit BS for the tourny termed as a "flagship".
Anyway enough of my conspiracy theory sounding talk.

ok seeing as I already have my answer for Wormholes. I have two other questions I'd like to know about, second question being more important than the first.
1. Will Planetary Interaction be available in major trade hubs like jita?
2. Will trades of goods from one planet to another be conducted through the trade PIN or will it be something that has to be done outside the normal planetary mode using courier contracts and the like?

Questions regarding design :
- we see the longer the route, the more expensive upgrades (when they work). So I wonder : will longer routes give advantage for their prices? Or, shorter ones, having many PINs gathered on a small surface, will generate more "pollution" due to their proximity ?
- planetary launch cans. Since we can have multiple launches (at least atm on Sisi) with 4d life span and multiple players playing with the same planet, are you ensuring each container will be in a different grid? Enough 250km radius grids around planets (didn't made the math)?
- districts. Are they coming with Tyrannis? How will they impact PI ?

I think I can answer that one. CCP said they wanted players to interact, buying and selling to each other. Now if one player could put up his stuff all over the planet where he finds exactly what he wants for his line then trading would be totally unnecessary for him. Positioning of the command centre would be totally irrelevant and only a placeholder.
With longer links being more expensive, he can't put one mine on either side of the planet, he has to buy from someone else who is closer to the deposit, thus creating player interaction. And the placement of the command centre will be more relevant. It also "concentrates" the base, giving a more clear base boundary instead of scattered facilities.
I don't think there will be any other bonuses/disadvantages.

Me too.... They should put a few civilian structures in there, and roads, which can increase or decrease the amount and speed you get materials because your workers are either happy or don't work very hard, etc.
Give me a way to really feel like a ruler of my own patch of planet!!

Incidentally this is a pretty valid question because this possibly will not be available on all planets. While the planetary location is disconnected from the solar system (not running on the same node) then activity on those planets promotes more traveling to the system and personally I don't see any reason to burden Jita with more traffic.

Why? Some people like driving space trucks, and that is a perfectly appropriate role within the EVE universe. Combat isn't the only "meaningful" game mechanic. Personally, I find ratting to be boring and unpleasant, so I choose not to make my money that way. There is no reason why every single player in EVE needs to do PI mini-game stuff, if it involves tasks that you do not enjoy, just do other things instead.

If I'm reading it right, you don't need sov at all. If you have sov it prevents people outside your . . . corp? alliance? napfest? whatever, it prevents random neuts and enemies from setting up on those planets. If you do not have sov, anyone that can reach the planet can drop a command center, just like in high sec. Since it is impossible to claim sov in wormholes, they should work exactly like high sec.

I hope that planets are not unduely influenced by sec status. There is no reason why an earthlike planet should be radically different based on how many space cops there are in orbit.
High sec might be more likely to contain planets that already have a large population, and population could be a variable that effects what you can do on a planet. A large population means that there might be a larger workforce available, offset by the fact that most of the surface resources for things like aluminum will have already been mined out by conventional means. The air water might be more polluted, some land might be unavailable for building factories because there are already suburbs built there. But other than population, highsec planets should be just like planets everywhere else.
The biggest incentive for lowsec and nullsec planets is that most of lowsec and nullsec is a ghost town, so you will be sharing your planets with fewer other players. The more players dropping junk on a planet, the less profitable it is, so remote planets are inherently more valuable that way.

SiSi is a little limited at the moment, feels like the alpha version it is, just the proof of concept linking/routing of pins, but there is so much good stuff that could be built into this!
Somewhere a dev said that "power" was going to be used to limit how much can be built by a single player. The planetary control hub thingies have a power provision, and I guess there will be power stations to be built and fueled or whatever... essentially power is to planets what powergrid is to ships.
But this is a planet, where are the people!? Surely we need a workforce, provisions to keep them alive, housing and entertainment to keep them happy... Are there any plans to actually make these pins into little colonies, living breathing entities? or are we just linking up automated production chains with power fitting requirements? aka the old pos production model with a pretty planet interface...
Are the planets that already have a history and a population going to have cities and npc infrastructure already in place? Will the players be able to link into that somehow?
So far the only npcs we have contact with are static agents and the hordes of rats that die daily... can we please have a more interactive mechanic that makes Eve feel like its full of people toiling away, not just filled with podpilots pootling about wrecking anything they can lock on to? We're meant to be the elite, so where are the masses?? |

The big question in my mind is how we will be able to manage potentially multiple planets over multiple systems.
How much information will be accessible through the universe / solar system map? Will we be able to see at a glance where we have infrastructure in place? (for example with a 'show assets' for the universe map)?
How will we see who else has occupancy on a planet? I assume through the trade window, but I'd like to know in advance before I drop a PCC onto a planet who's already in situ?

1) So you need SOV for regions that require SOV for certain stuff, what about regions like Venal? 2) With more ISK, and thus the ability to upgrade your factories like crazy, is that one way to drive out others on the planet? 3) Would lowsec still be interesting to do this stuff? (this was edit #2, lol)

Just a quick question... will there be a specific thread on Ideas & Discussion about this?
There are many ideas that the eve community could contribute to this, the sooner everyone can start brainstorming ideas in one thread, the better.
Can we have one? Please?

Well After fooling around I made a link form opposite poles and it was being eaten by the planet, thats been fixed now tho good to see.
Something else that sorta bugs me. If the Hex borders are going to be in the final outcome the light blue color is very hard to see against the ice planet. I have to zoom in really close and even then its hard to see. Working on the assumption different hex spots on the map will have the possibility of having different minerals etc. Oisio V is the planet in question i'm playing around with.

How much isk per hour can i make with such a planetary thing in average ? And how much command centres can i have at one time ? Or is this without limit, so that i can make 1000 colonies on Jita IV ?

Isk per hour is unknown as of yet. Because we don't know what planet resources will be and what they will manufacture just yet.

ALL PLANETS IS ALL PLANETS FFS!!!!
How many times is someone going to keep asking.
Don't be mad because you don't like people asking questions. just shut up and keep it to yourself.
Incidentally this is a pretty valid question because this possibly will not be available on all planets. While the planetary location is disconnected from the solar system (not running on the same node) then activity on those planets promotes more traveling to the system and personally I don't see any reason to burden Jita with more traffic.
also: wicked cool nested quote we got going there.
Well -an easy fix... there are no resources left on the planets in the Jita system! Makes a decent backstory as well...
Each of the races would have depleted the "good" resources in there home systems before venturing out to secure more resources in connecting systems.
ALSO NPC space is nicely conquered and controlled... Since resources ARE limited and thus in higher demand -local government "NPC corps" would naturaly impose tighter restrictions, limits and fees to such activities.
You can also expand this further. Planets could simply be ruled as "off limits" and CONCORD would prevent there use. Governments also hate Monopolies... expect to be limited to the amount of PI a group would be allowed to do ( corp / alliance whatever )
You can also tweak this idea to give the "empire junkies" of EVE something special... require standing as well before NPC controlled planets can be utilized -or specific aspects of PI can be unlocked.
All of the above might help prevent the "gold rush" in empire which may occur when the feature goes live. Sure you can do PI in empire with CONCORD watching your back... but the lack of large quantities of "good" resources" and the tight controls, costly permits and restrictions imposed by local governments will discourage large amounts of PI from occuring naturally in empire.
So, like every other thing in EVE. It can be done in empire... but it has limits, overhead and thus gives the player base more incentive to venture out in the direction of 0.0 if they want a better return.
CPP can influence the amount of PI occuring in empire by controlling how "difficult" the local governments are about allowing it's use. CPP can control systems like Jita by delcaring all the resources depleted or off limits.
-my two cents.

Most of the earthlike planets in highsec (.8 and above) should be intensively developed planets with high populations. Of course they are always willing to welcome new investors and new jobs, but they also have special restrictions. These are the planets most likely to have space elevators in place and a large workforce available, but they are also likely to have all sorts of building restrictions and labour laws, just like in RL. Homeworld planets may have high taxes, high labour costs, or not allow the most polluting industries. Various factions might forbid manufacturing products they consider immoral, so no fliming saucy holoreels on the Amarr Homeworld, and no manufacturing Vitoc on core planets in Minmatar or Galente space. Combined with heavy competition from other high sec capsuleers, that should be enough to strongly encourage players to seek out the lower fringes of highsec, if not lowsec and nulsec.
It would also be easy to claim that in the very busiest systems, like the main trade hubs, all the available resources are controlled by entrenched cartels, and there simply isn't room for independent pod pilots. The big NPC corps should have enough political clout to do that, at least in a few systems.

OK. This is starting to look like it will get the Ironfleet Towing and Salvage seal of approval.
My biggest fear was that the entire process would be in a software lockbox that tied into the economy without there being any way for hostile or greedy players to try and get a piece of the action.
The EVE University video link and accompanying brief text guide was very helpful. The rockets go up...and stay there, and the player who owns them has to warp to them, open them like a jet can, take the stuff, and leave.
From the video, looks like these rockets are 10,000 cubic meters. That means, industrials galore!
Now, I was HOPING that the rockets would come up in a predictable place, like the planetary warp-in. But frankly, on a busy planet that would be gank-central. Random locations that the owner gets a warp-to is what it looks like we'll actually get. That's OK, because:
1) It only takes one probe cycle to probe out the location of a hauler. Lurk near a planet, probes out, when the hauler shows up on d-scan, hit the scan button, warp to him, profit! If he's very fast, he'll be in and out before you arrive. The wary thrive, the complacent lose, this is EVE at its best.
2) Even if the timing is tweaked until that's not practical, in order to retrieve a planetary product there has to be a ship in space; it has to come from somewhere and it has to go back with loot on board. This is good for everybody; this is targets where there weren't any before. Fat, juicy targets.
OM NOM NOM. That is all.

they will probably limit colonies by skill level 1-5 or something
but if u put 1000 colonies on Jita IV your killing your own production, the planets themselves have a set mineral count, so if u suck and suck X1000 colonies u're stealing from your own colonies lol

One Command center per planet at this stage of pre-release.
And ya, they made a production chain that includes NPC goods and Rogue Drone parts that culminates in Nanite Repair Paste. Though I think you'd need a Terra-like world to assemble the entire production line on a single world.
Apparently the deal is you mine Ore, Water and Gas, ship it to refineries and plants that make the raw materials into less raw materials and repeat until you get what you want, then shipped again to the Command Center to be launched into orbit for your pick up.

Edited by: Shidhe on 13/03/2010 11:20:04 About which planets allowed - the best way would be a sec status limit, for example 0.6 and below. This would allow high sec use, but only on the borders of low sec. Game justification - the high populations of systems in 1.0-0.7 means that all resources are already being exploited.
However in empire, taxes would have to be paid (depending on sec status again, just as for high sec POS) to the empire in question, making low or null sec planets economically preferable. In alliance territory, tax agreements would be possible, but enforcing non-payment would be the responsibility of the alliance.

Edited by: something somethingdark on 13/03/2010 12:54:56 Edited by: something somethingdark on 13/03/2010 12:54:09 at first i was like cool planetary ineractions but then i read "awesome ui" then i tried i loled so hard .... out of pitty too
its placing colored dots arround anywhere you like without sense, structure or reason to currently make nanite paste the current ui is the same old boxes with the same old uninspired cluttering of clicks to do whatever it is you are supposed to do wich isnt realy much explained within the object you are interacting with your view keeps moving off to what you centered it on to keep your colored dot in view while you get your square box that cleverly hides the data you are after for your awesome excel in space adventure and to top it off the planets feel tiny
the whole thing feels like it was only just started to be developed aiming for a pre summer release, given the apparent need to pump out 2 "expansions" per year, this is is headed for failure given ccp's ability to stick with things and continue developing it( lol cosmos, poses, factional warfare ...... everything realy) the resources available to make it look epic (3d engine n stuffs you know ... ) the current UI (wich was changed once from slightly rounded to totaly square ... ) the time left to develop it into something good this is going to be the most pointless, rubbish looking addition to date
calling it in advance : given the current hints on ui and graphics 4 year old with a box of crayons and some paper could develop a better looking more fun and engaging game than what is currently layd out on sisi(and im aware its alpha)

One question....
Is placing of these structures (i.e. command centre/extractors/processing factories etc) as dots and spots (with some links in between them) from the planet view as we have it now, as far as it will go? or is it gonna be more in depth like actually being able to see enlarged view on your district from perspective view where you can see the actual terrain (trees/sand/sea/volcanos - planet specific related stuff) where you can also see a proper shape of deployed structures (and later [after DUST514 release] see them smoking after getting damaged or completely destroyed)???
I hope the answer is NO and that we will see something more than just above 'dots' cause really an Ogame in comparison to this will look awesome...

Just did a quick run through of the new planetary system - this is really neat. Just a couple questions:
1. It looks like the filtering function is not yet complete - is the intent to use the filter and search for densities of a certain material on the planet? I'm also wondering if you'll take the sun shader off when using the filter - that could prove to be an annoyance.
2. I launched some items from the surface, but I take it nothing currently works beyond that at this point. Without the previously mentioned space elevator, is there some kind of secure cargo pod that has to be picked up?

1. filter is part of scanning which was stated in devblog as not working
2. goto journal new tab planet launchers and you can warp to a can with your contents

have you like playd this game longer than 2 months ? If you actualy did and where paying any sort of attentions to the last couple expansions you could perhaps see a patern forming Here let me help you Dominion = just happens if you are not aware of the issues you should probably ... im too polite to say it ;) Apoc = lots of blabla, new content, never toutched again although half of it is in dire need already (hint : t3 cruisers epic storylines are the same old missions on a chain and wormholes are overcrouded QR = a service pack disguised as expansion oh and we got a ship empyrian age = epic factional warfare ... never toutched again could give you a nice list of whats broken but whers the point trinity = still not completed but hey we recently got half of the planets (the other half is black) and we are getting a revamped scorp soon
and so on and in more detail wich probably went past you alltogether .... and if i go further down past revelations and rmr you probably have no idea anymore what im talking about
additionaly if you have been arround for long enough and actualy used sisi and perhaps even multi, you would know that the whole ui thing wont change much more once the basics are inplace buttons and rearranging of things yeah but the general look and feel will be there for a while.....
basicaly us jaded people who have been arround for longer, ether have given up completly or just start *****ing early(read : all the time) so things might not turn out quite as horrible as they could but only if enough people cry

Ok Thats IT! If you got problems with this game, why are you playing it? If you have problems with CCP, why are you paying them? If you had any constructive thing to say, we that is what this thread is here for, not to here you whine about this and that. At least CCP gives players a chance, at all, to contribute to the developmental process, a lot of games don't even do that. Personally, i have no problems with any of the expansions that have come out. Heck, were lucky we even GET expansions. A lot of games go years without expansions. HTFU. dsbfhaeiWNGBFKBfv HOLD ME BACK, HOLD ME BACK!
OK! now, onto a related question. Will the population of the planet have any affect on the output level of production for this release? Also, could there possibly be racial specific buildings (PINS. Maybe have specific building that can only be built in that factions territory. In 0.0 there would be no limits, so it would provide another reason for pilots to get out to 0.0. Im not asking to turn EVE into Civilization, but i think it could be a cool idea for immersive reasons. Just throwing it out there. Lastly, will the dust players, uhhh, "gaming enviroment" depend upon what is built by us, the EVE players, i.e: If team A is fighting team b, can team A take cover behind a Factory because we have a factory there, and cant if there is none?

Well, I have to say, this is exciting. It would be nice if I could make something other than just nanite paste, but it's a start. Four questions:
1) When you scan for deposits currently from an extractor you get a list of all of the possible elements, even the ones that the extractor can't really extract (like nitrogen from an ore extractor). Is that just a placeholder or is that the final mechanic?
2) Are the "reactions" going to be on the market like the reactions that you can do at a POS? Or are they going to be all available by default to any of the processing plants? If they are blueprints, will there be the opportunity to research them to improve their effectiveness?
3) Can we get a better message when you try to route to a processing plant that doesn't have a reaction picked yet? Right now it tells you that the teamsters are telling you to stop wasting your time setting up routes with nothing to carry. But the problem isn't in the route really, it is in the processing plant. Can the message say something useful like "the processing plant doesn't require any materials since it doesn't have a reaction specified for it"
4) It's been said that this will be independent from the rest of industry, it won't use up existing production slots for your character. But is it going to be influenced by existing skills or is it going to be run by a completely new skill set? Should I be training Metalurgy or Scrap Metal Reprocessing or anything like that?
I'm very impressed so far, looking forward to the next build.

A few points on common-sense resource distribution:
1) System security status is a shorthand proxy for resources value in the system, based on the idea that systems with a higher sec status are more heavily exploited by the "invisible NPC corporation ships/people". During the Dominion discussions there was some mention of civilian ships simply not showing up on overview because they are not valid targets according to CONCORD (let's ignore the "convoys" for a moment in this logic, of course).
This is also why there are things like Arkanor in 0.0 space, and not in Empire--deposits in Empire are either under strict (and heavily guarded) control by megacorps/empires, or were mined out years ago. Not so much in 0.0, where the risk of operations and long logistical tails means that the deposits are still unsecured.
2) The Empires control access to resourced within their space--see the recent "auction" of space by the Caldari State. We can expect access to Empire planets to be limited by security status, and possibly even by corp standings if CCP spends the time to associate each planet with a holding NPC corp. Oh yes, and "planetary charters", like POSes.
Keep in mind that regardless, point #1 above would indicate that the most valuable resources of Empire planets are already claimed by either the Empires themselves or NPC corporations. If you want the gems, you have to go to unsecured/unclaimed space (0.0).
3) Wormhole planets, assuming they were not depleted by the ancients long ago, would have the most unique resources in EVE, since they were only opened to exploitation by the cluster a very short time ago.

I played a little with the planet scanning interface on sisi. Not much to do in the current condition it is at the moment, but I keep up hopes for the future.
Still, from the standpoint of the explorers I hope that it is not made the same mistake that has been done with moon minerals. I specifically refer to the fact that resources on moons are static. Thus, once a moon has been surveyed there is no need to do that again. I hope that a more dynamic system for allocating resources is being employed for planets, otherwise scanning planets will soon be another obsolete activity.

Just want to note the EvE font is still absurdly tiny.
Also the mouse cursor is tinier...didn't think that was possible.
And hovering over facilities brings up a very tiny gray area around the building. It is NOT BIG ENOUGH. i miss 1/3 of my links. And to be better causes serious carpal tunnel after 20mins.
Storage facilities do not output to PCC, and are limited to 1 output??

The answer was yes, possible and that exclusive access to a planet would make it more profitable then most planets in Empire.
As to if the planets vary in value depending on security as well as by type and how... is unknown.

Would it be possible, in a situation where there are two friendly players on one planet that would like to interact for the purposes of industry, to link player A's pins with player B's pins? Would such an interaction be necessary or desirable in the final product of this feature?

I like the idea of planetary interaction, but I'm not sure I understand exactly how resource distribution works.
Space rocks give you 8 minerals that can not be found on planets, fair enough. But space rocks never contain iron, gold, silver, etc.
Space ice gives you a variety of useful isotopes. But space ice never contains plain water or oxygen.
Moons give you a selection of useful minerals. But never contain the 8 minerals found in space rocks, even if the moon has no atmosphere and lots of craters where space rocks have crashed into it. Moons are also never inhabitable, and never contain minerals found on planets. Moon resources can only be harvested from space, sending down a habitation module and a bunch of dudes with pick axes will get you nothing.
Planets will give you water, gold, silver, oxygen, etc. But if you want tungsten or silicates you will need to go find a moon, you aren't allowed to remove silicate sand from planets. (They don't mind if you deplete the ocean, but don't you dare touch the beaches). Planetary resources can never be harvested from space. Regardless of how hellish the planet, the only way to harvest resources is to set up a base on the planet's surface. Yes, this goes even for planets where the surface is entirely liquid or molten, and for gas giants that have no reachable surface to speak of.
Is that right? That doesn't sound quite right. Will there be some flavor fiction to explain why it works this way?

I'll take a stab at that.
Moons have significantly less mass than planets. This allows the mineral harvesters to get much closer as they have a limited ability to keep themselves in place. The minerals on moons are also located in large deposits that are exposed to the surface which means that mining laser technology can be used to efficiently mine the moon faster than any human team could. It's just not practical to send people to mine it.
Planets have too much gravity for an orbital mining array as it would have to be placed too far away to ensure a good stable orbit. Mining laser range aside, it's not practical to use them on planets as the vast majority of useful mineral deposits are not exposed to the surface for a mining laser to harvest. This is what necessitates sending a team of trained geologists to prospect your planets resources and set up bases that can penetrate the planet's exterior surface and harvest the resources found there.
While there are a great deal of useful resources on planets that can also be found on moons, it is so much more efficient to mine them on moons with mining laser tech that nobody bothers trying to harvest them on planets. Not only is your yield lower, but you have the added complication of warehousing them and getting them off the planet which only serve to decrease profits.
Asteroids contain all the same minerals that can be found on moons and in planets. However, asteroids are small and don't yield enough of them to be an effective mining strategy to obtain minerals available on moons or planets. The only reason you would bother asteroids is that there are larger concentrations of minerals that are difficult to find and/or extract from planets or moons (omber, bistot, etc). In other words, there are 'roids that contain moon minerals, but nobody mines them because moons are so much more effective that 'roid mining vessels set their sensors to ignore these so they can focus on the ore that makes more money.
There are a few plot holes in there but whatever. Cheers! |

Gas planets: The command centers for gas planets are configured with gas bladders that can collect and concentrate gas from the atmosphere. This gives the structure the ability to regulate it's density. By maintaining a specific density, the station would 'bob like a cork' in the atmosphere at a given distance from the planetary core. During harsh weather, the stations can dive under or float above it by regulating it's density.
During calm weather, powerful supermagnets are used to manipulate the charged ions in the atmosphere and create a false 'wind' that draws planetary gas through the collectors which sift out useful ions and isotopes for storage and containment. (humans on earth built a submarine that works on this principle but it was too slow for practicality)
----
Molten Planets: The intense amount of fumes from this planetary type form a dense atmosphere that makes mining lasers completely ineffective. Convection of the molten surface also creates intense and variable magnetic fields that prevent tractor beams from functioning.
A command center would be configured to withstand extreme heat (of course) and with a powerful external refrigeration unit. The concept is to fly low over the planetary surface and cool to solidity a small 'island' you can then land your base on. High amounts of power are required to keep the island solid but the ease of extracting minerals from the molten surface which continually convects naturally more than outweigh this cost. |

Sov will be required, but the exact details of it haven't been ironed out. But we are thinking about something along the lines of the alliance plus blues. But we haven't finalized that yet.
If sov is required then I assume planet mining is not possible in high, low, or wormhole space. I know of no current game mechanic where sov is required to use something when in null, but not required when in empire or w-space. Certain game mechanics either require sov or they don't, which category does planet mining fall into?
Originally by: CCP Fear To get the items off the planet, you need to go to it. It will be possible to view a planet remotely, possibly reduced by a skill, but in order to perform some complex actions, you need to be close to it, in the system at least.
edit: But you can do it from anywhere right now, but you need to be at the planet to set up the command center, and retrieve the rocket.
What rocket? I've done several launches from my command center, loading different things into the launch payload. No matter what I try, however, nothing appears at planet orbit where my hauler is waiting to pick it up. I tried a "Select All" for overview types and still got nothing. Is that part of the mechanic not functioning yet?
Also, how will players get stuff from space to the planet? Materials like ionized water will need to be brought to the surface to complete certain items. I don't see a way to accomplish that atm.
Answers to any or all of these questions would be greatly appreciated. :)

CCP has not really answered this one to the best of my knowledge. There is speculation that whoever hold sov will be able to control who is on the planets, so in 0.0 space that means you have to pay the sov owners, and in empire space you have to pay the empire, much like the current starbase charters for hi-sec POS. Wspace would presumably be free to use since there is nobody there to pay, and you can't gain sov. However, as you pointed out, CCP has not really answered this one yet. On Sisi anyone can do anything anywhere, which I'm assuming means it is just incomplete, not the desired mechanic.

In your journal there is a new tab called Planetary Launches. You get a bookmark to each of the rockets as they come up. Apparently the rockets are incapable of being launched to you, they just go up in a random direction and then you can warp to the can. I can only surmise that there are budget cut-backs in the AI department...

Correct, this is not currently possible. Maybe with the next sprint...

While obviously, none of us know really what is going to happen come Dust-off, some key things have been mentioned, and basically HAVE to happen.
1. Eve has to be able to function without DUST... DUST has to be able to function without EVE. 2. In order for DUST to be able to function without EVE, there must be some form of scenario in DUST that is randomly generated for use as training grounds, skirmish's, whatever.. instanced combat for DUSTies free from a specific EVE environment/occurance. 3. In order for EVE to be able to findtion without DUST, there has to be a method of initiating planetary combat (offense AND defense side) without a sufficient DUST playerbase. This would imply that there will be some form of NPC merc's in-game. It would make sense that they would be either market or player generated (a product of the 'population control' that has yet to be revealed?). 4. DUST combat seems to be initiated from some sort of EVE based planetary assault ship. I would imagine if you could fly one of these into the wormhole, you could dispatch dusties from there. 5. If you cannot get a DUST ship into W-Space, odds are you could farm your own soldiers on your planets.. or... robots.. ;-) Intel/Nomad |

I have some Question,
1) I'm guessing that the space elevators will allow you to drastically reduce the overhead cost of shooting planet goo into space? (Correct me if I am wrong) 2) Will all planets have at least 1 conquerable space elevator? 3) Will every Tom, ****, and Harry in this game be able to stake a claim on a planet from the get-go or will you have to work for the privilege (like fighter bombers are with the super-carriers)? 4) Will the planet goo cut into moon goo market shares? (Judging from the test server iteration it will)
Thanks, Zen

Eve feels nothing like space, theres no freedom, the galaxy is tiny and overpopulated, and mountains of skills stand in your way of everything you can do. Not inspiring at all, just conceptually pretty.
The point of the game, much like Life[the Ultimate Game] is not to mull the flavour of the peas, but to make your competitor mull the flavour.
If you can swallow the peas and smile, you've won. May 26th. Peas. It's what's for Dinner.
