I haven't retried so far since a month or so ... So is Eve now playable with Wine or do we still need Cedega ?

Ok, good news then :) Because with Revelations my Eve was broken, so I thought that it was still broken. Good to hear it :)

wine-0.9.31 should have much better Eve support when it is released highlights would be: - the heavy memleak is fixed - character icon rendering should work now
basic steps would be: - install wine-0.9.31 - run wine regedit (setup OffscreenRenderingMode to pbuffer according to http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys) - run the installer via wine or copy eve into the user home directory ~/.wine/drive_c/somewhere - copy arial.ttf into ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/ (should be included in mscorefonts package on your distro) - go into the Eve directory and run "wine bin/RedistD3DXOnly.exe" to install d3dx9_30.dll - use "wine winecfg" and make sure your sound stuff is set up right
gl with running eve with "wine eve.exe"
tips: alt+enter might help if the video mode isn't correctly applied only tested with nvidia gfx running "wine logserver.exe" and starting a new workspace might help to spot some problems

For those following wine via the git source control tool, elfe's page now notes that his stuff has been folded into the wine main tree. That's great! I'm running a build from git under Ubuntu 6.10 dual booted with OSX and apart from the occasional weird ( sound related? ) mutex lockup, it's working really well. The FPS isn't anything to crow about, but I deeply suspect that's ATI's fault.
Originally by: Mitora Dori So I decided to try setting up a ramdisk for the cache.
This is a pretty cool idea, but I suggest that when you copy the ramdisk cache back to "solid" disk, you remove the contents of the cache.bak first. If EVE periodically cleans out it's cache, you could end up additional files sitting around on your drive that were removed from the ramdisk by EVE, but never removed from the drive.

Got EVE up and running under up-to-date Fedora Core 6, everything looks fine exept the portratis. Also a small problem with emulated desktop (EVE screen inside of it is displaced a bit). Used wine-0.9.30-1.fc6

Gave 0.9.31 a go, what a difference ! Finally, FPS rates with wine have reached an acceptable level. I run about 70-80fps in station and 25 - 60 in space. This is with wine running a virtual desktop of 1400x1050 and eve running fullscreen inside that.
The only issues I have atm are:
- double mousecursor - few graphical glitches - unable to run 2 clients at the same time, the moment the second launches its login screen, the first client dies
Very nice to see Elfe's patches finally made it in.
Keep up the good stuff Elfe

Testing some more, it seems the memory leak is still present in 0.9.31 Running 2 windowed EVE clients, I lose about 2MB/s.

are you starting both clients in the same virtual desktop?
http://elfenstein.mine.nu/eve/screen4.jpg is what I get (tq version from the same folder)
started as wine explorer.exe /desktop=eve1,1024x768 eve.exe wine explorer.exe /desktop=eve2,1024x768 eve.exe

Running them the same way you do, running from different EVE directories and in 1400x1050. Strangely enough, I don't have a minimize button ... No idea why.

So FPS is fine, the mem leak is annoying tho

Ok I've read through most of this but haven't been able to find the problem I'm having. I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu and Cedega 5.2.10. When I use Cedega to load eve the initial eve: revelations screen comes up. When it tries to move to the login screen all i get is a blank screen. Please help.

Sounds like a (cedega) settings issue to me, but I guess you checked those. Have you set your GDDB profile to EVE-Online ?

I'm not sure about all the cedega settings. I can say however if I have the affinity set to win2k or winxp it happens both times. As for the GDDB profile there isn't one for eve on cedega or at least not one supported by transgaming unless I've missed something.

There is a GDDB profile actually, I suggest you try that. If you don't see it, your cedega install may be borked.

The memory leak was fixed??? Before it would double in size over a couple hours and now it grows by six times in half an hour. Other than downgrading, is there anything I can do to fix or slow this?

I'm seeing this also - reverting to 0.9.30 and using the last patch from elfe is much more playable imo.

yes the memory leak that was in <=wine-0.9.30 is fixed in wine-0.9.31 but someone managed to sneak an other memleak in
also there is a regression that affects several other games so with a bit of luck there will be a 0.9.32 soon

Cool, will try that when it comes. BTW, I noticed that two clients with wine consume less CPU than 2 clients with cedega. Cedega always maxes out to 100% usage per CPU core per client. Looks like wine does something a bit smarter than cedega does

Are there any ATI users here who have fixed the black screen login 'hang' with cedega 5.1.0? I'm noticing quite a few people with all tests passed (in this and other forums) with ATI cards having this issue...any fixes? I ask as I do NOT use ATI and am unable to assist much with this issue and not having any issues either on the wine or cedega side.

The normal response should be: "There's something wrong if it's not using 100%." Only reason for Eve to be limited would be if rendering to V-sync is enabled. That's not usually a done thing but maybe you have it enabled when you are using WINE.

With my Radeon Mobility 7500 I cannot get eve to work with Cedega.. I get the black screen hang.
With wine it works fine. However, I first had to copy the ms core fonts to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts to fix the black screen problem.
If you are getting the black login screen with wine MAKE SURE you copy the Microsoft core fonts to the directory above. This fixed the issue for me. The ms core fonts should be provided by your distro. In ubuntu the package name is 'msttcorefonts'.
Also, the registry entry for the fonts directory was 'Fonts' but the folder name was 'fonts'. It's case sensitive I think so I just renamed the folder to 'Fonts'. A symlink should work too. ln -s Fonts/ fonts/.
Eve was working great for a while but now it crashes everytime I try to undock . I turned on debugging in wine and the last message it gives is:
warn:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_GetDeviceCaps (0x17a3c8) : stub, calling idirect3d for now
Anyone have any ideas? Like I said, it was working great for a while now it crashes EVERYTIME I try to undock. I'm thinking it could just be my laptop overheating because it gets super super hot (I'm gonna get a new aluminum cooling pad for it with 3 fans - I don't think the cheap plastic one I have now is cutting it.) But if you have any other ideas that would be awesome.
CCP - please please please release a damn linux client!!!!!!!!! Can't you see how many people want one??? I'd even pay an extra $5 a month to cover the development costs. |

Ohh and by the way, this is with the open source ati drivers not the ones provided by ATI. ATI doesn't support my Radeon mobility 7500 with theirs. I guess it is too old. *curses ATI*
And I didn't change anything since it started crashing. Before it would crash after like a half hour or more (yes it always has crashed but atleast I could undock and play for a while) - now it won't let me undock at all.
Finally, it runs pretty darned good at 16bit on my old 32mb video card. 24bit ran okay too but 16 is much faster. (Pentium M 1.4ghz, 1gig ram).
*pokes CCP to work on that linux client* Theme song for past few days :-p |

When you say "crash", do you mean a reboot or just back to desktop?
If it's a reboot then it's your hardware/bios, otherwise it's more likely a compatibility problem. One experiment is to try same installation on another PC also with ATI graphics.

windows isn't case sensitive there (working fine for me without that, just make sure you got the arial.ttf in there)

It crashes back to desktop. No hardware errors in any log files and such. I wish I did have another computer with ATI graphics in it but I don't. Especially not with the exact same card (Radeon Mobility 7500). Everything else is Nvidia. I just wish I could get it to work stable on this laptop that way I can log my alt into the laptop and my main on my desktop. And dual booting is not an option. Too bad eve doesn't run in vmware - that would rock.
Ohh well, I think I'm gonna write it off to the open source drivers not being as good as the ATI supplied ones for now. When I get a better cooling pad I'll try again and see if that makes any difference because the funny thing now (after posting those comments) is that it sometimes lets me undock fine, sometimes it crashes to desktop, and sometimes it will crash on me after being in space for a little while. It never crashes when in station. Since it is random (I can't reproduce the crash doing one specific thing - undocking is the closest to reproducible but that doesn't always crash it and it also crashes in space doing random things) and I can almost burn my hand on the bottom of the laptop I hope it is a heat problem. I guess time will tell. Theme song for past few days :-p |
