Gives u ideas on the more expensive ISP's but for some reason they seem to work, never have any kick off time from any server
www.merula.net is worth a look, not the cheapest for sure, but when I play online I want it to work all the time, have tried dialup in the past and for tiscali lusers, it might be quicker

Well I gave Pipex support a call this evening, and was answered, surprisingly, within 10 minutes. They asked my to send a traceroute to the support team, and stated that they had had a number of users with the same fault and had technicians looking at it, but with no ETA. non of my hops to 87.237.39.200 went near a Tiscali named node though.
So at least it seems that they are aware that it is a problem and seem to be doing something, although the I note the Tiscali thread is four months old, so I'm not holding out a lot of hope. Unfortunately I can't change my email address atm, so I'm stuck with this :(
Interestingly COD4 and CS:S both work fine, although I have seen other forum posts which indicated that they were both affected

Originally by: ragupasta Welp I never had a problem until they upgraded my to 8meg, and low and behold, I cant get on after 6pm, its 11:32pm now and I still cant get on.
Not blocking ports, my ass. Utter rubbish, just to let any Tiscali workers know who may read this...
"limelight-lon-gw.ip.tiscali.net (213.200.77.118), everytime it goes through that server after 6pm gmt, 100% packet loss, everytime....
Im all for donning smartbombs, and suicide ganking Tiscali HQ, they might think differently if we (EVE userbase) was to set up a forum colected data over their crappy lies, then mass exodusing that binformation to watchdog/Ofcom/Ombudsman, get it on a name and shame Tv and newspapers..... "Eve community, pod-kills Tiscali in a battle of the connections"
Well said ragupasta its not the macro miners any more its Tiscali, i hope every 1 who has some kind of power or a group gets togther and sets the hounds on these people.

Well at least they now seem to know something about it which was more than they would admit to over a week ago when I first called them. Since then I've heard nothing at all despite many emails. My hops don't seem to go through any Tiscali named servers either but I have all the same symptoms as those folks on the Tiscali forum so they've certainly done something.
I find the Pipex response of "we didn't know Tiscali had a problem when we took a business decision to migrate onto their network" quite shocking tbh. I guess it fits with the "All systems are fully operational" which scrolls across the top of the Tiscali forums. I'm also still struggling with how they equate their t&c's "we have the right to manage your traffic and download speed" (i.e. limited) with "you won't have any access to online games in peak periods". (i.e. none). Maybe they would like to explain what "reasonable endeavours" they are making to fix a fault which was first acknowledged over 14 weeks ago since they're so fond of quoting their contract.
I understand technical problems do happen. I'm not for one minute suggesting that they can resolve these instantly and appreciate that they can be complex and multi-faceted. However, we can expect them to regularly communicate with their paying customers to what they are doing about it.
I've been using my lack of accessibility to migrate all my email addresses as right now no matter what pressure we collative bring to bear, I'm being to think that resolving this is simply beyond them.

For anyone suffering these issues, please contact Ofca in game. He has just talked me through setting up a secure ssh tunnel to his server and I can access Eve through this.
He is willing to set this up for other users for a small amount of isk each week, so drop him a line and hopefully this will get you through until you can change isp

Edited by: N4PALM on 21/01/2008 06:43:50 Those who have recieved the eve mail about contacting Ofca for a so called solution to the not being able to connect issue.
Sorry Ofca but I recommend users dont do this. Ofca is cashing in on yr troubles and it may not even be safe for you to do so. This looks to me to be him setting up a proxy, and thats all good but...
You dont know who he is, do you really want your EVE traffic going through his server which includes yr login password.
AND why pay isk to this guy for this service when there are free alternatives out there already. If you read these various Tiscali related threads you will know this. I posted the following solution on these very forums months ago, it was the only way I could connect at the time. (For a permanent solution leave Tiscali FFS its not hard to do, do it already, Tiscali suck)
HTTP-Tunnel Is a free app that will solve your problems. I was using this program for months before I finally left Tiscali for a better ISP. There is also a paid version of HTTP-Tunnel that gives you a higher bandwidth service which I also used to pay for, costs soemthing like ú2.50 per month and you can pay by paypal.
So you have the option of a reliable service that works already and you would be dealing with a proper company not just some guy on EVE that you dont know.
P.S. I realise Ofca is probably just trying to help, and it may well be genuine, but that doesnt mean you shouldnt be cautious of such offers. --- I'm in yr posts dleetin all yr sigs - Cortes Fight the power! - Cortes |

Please do your research. EVE traffic is encrypted. I've seen pleas for ISK-paid alternative, and that's why I provide it. I don't belive there is any real risk involved whatsoever, other than maybe me disconnecting the users :).

This method of SSH tunneling is often used to encrypt firewall management traffic . If its secure enough to pass stringent audits from large financial institutions, then its secure enough for my Eve traffic.
This solution is real money free, has no bandwidth restrictions and works. What bandwidth does the free subcription of http-tunnel get?
I don't see why Ofca shouldn't receive something for putting this solution together, taking you through getting it working, giving up his bandwidth and ensuring that his equipment is always on.

Harlequ1n, while you're mostly right, it doesn't work exactly this way. Traffic is encrypted between you and me only, but I can still view it unencrypted on my side. That said, unencrypted traffic is encrypted itself by the eve-client, so to put it simply: there are two layers of encryption, first one is decrypted on my server, second on CCP server. I could easily look beyond first encryption layer, but not beyond second. Your passwords, pew pew traffic and other oh-so-important things are safe from my oh-so-nosy self. ;p
PS. Why there are two stickies on the same subject? :)

Edited by: Gandolf on 21/01/2008 19:47:30 pipex customer here , cant play in the evenings now due to this stupid problem but what really annoys me is they wont waver my contract due to this issue, they asked me to email them so they have it in writing my bets it will be swept under the carpet, they said it could be upto 2 weeks before i get a reply although officially its 5-7 working days.
surly this is a known issue to them so why i have to write it down for them is beyond me i signed no contract so as far as im concerned there is no contract as i have not seen it in writing and nothing has been sent to me.
any advice would help i want my mac code and a new isp but cant afford the cancelation just now as im a student.

Edited by: Complex Potential on 22/01/2008 14:04:40 Hi Guys
I was with Tiscali until about a month ago. They started this traffic shaping crap on me around November and I finally got out just after new year.
A few people have pointed out that other ISPs are probably going to follow Tiscali's traffic shaping policy and I think they are right. So how can you find an ISP that wont go down the same road (or even worse, get eaten by the Tiscali monster)?
I was having the same issue until I stumbled on this service from Plusnet:
Plusnet's Your Way Pro
Plusnet used to use Tiscali's architecture but dropped them a few months back (so no chance of them going back any time soon). And the above package gives priority bandwidth to online gamers ALL OF THE TIME. And this includes Eve!
It has a 10GB per month limit, but Eve uses less than 15MB per hour so it will never come into play unless you want to download reams of movies.
I've been impressed with their service and the support guys are UK based and actually know what they're talking about.
I pay ú20 per month now rather than the ú15 I paid Tiscali, but I'm happy to say I'm getting 10 times the service and would thoroughly recommend Plusnet to any gamers.
Hope this helps.

He got my newly busted Pipex connection sorted with a bit of an IP Tunnel. Highly recommended.

I know I haven't posted for a while, but I don't have any news for you at the moment. My Pipex (Tisacali owened) wouldnt connect to web pages and e-mail was intermittant.
After two hours it came back. Web pages were slow to load for the next few hours but at least they were working. I tried eve and guess what that worked too (albeit slow to log in and handshake as well).
Looks like they did some changes . I'll see what happens tonight. Anyone else lucky?

if you're having connection trouble with web viewing and email too it's nothing to do with the eve-specific traffic shaping and nothing has changed- as evinced by me sitting here staring at "status: unknown".
also good luck messaging random people to get tunneled into EVE, don't cry too loudly when you find your account stolen

Congrats , I too will be gone from Tiscappi as soon as I can.
I did notice from the link that Idnet call it, up to 8meg sevice , and then in small print a bit further down, it said:-
"Actual broadband download speeds can vary from below 2 Mbps during peak times, up to a maximum of 7.15 Mbps."
So why don't they call it up to 7.15 meg BB since even at the start they say it will never be 8
Anyway goodluck

Having been reading a bit more, and starting to see more of a trend toward tiered services, I will be thinking of getting an ISP on a month by month contract.
Then if they change the way they work , or mess around with free upgrades , which in truth are a way of altering your T and C's, you can be out in weeks rather than getting held to ransom by the 12 month contract.
I think it's reasonable to say also, that these fair use policies are so obscure as are the traffic shaping systems, that you can only tell what your ISP is going to be like by trying it.
I certainly would stipulate and get it in writing by email in future that my main use is for Eve, and if that's restricted at any point it gives me an immediate break of contract.
A lot of ISP's say they don't traffic shape, reading their T and C's, says a different story.
