I'm loathe enough already to use free mass-tunneling software to get a connection to EVE due to the huge security risk but I can justify it because I'm just one of thousands of users most of whom won't care about someone's dumb internet spaceship game.
You're either incredibly stupid or incredibly naive if you don't appreciate why someone would be wary of streaming all their EVE data through another player's computer.

Nah, I'm just a new-born sysadmin with 6 years of experience currently working for an ISP. Just wanted to know what would the reason be to get worried about tunneling RSA-encrypted traffic through anything. Oh well, guess I will trust you and lay some point to point fiber from my home to tranquility cluster. You surely know a lot, so you must know what you are saying ;)

How can you play eve? I mean, with insight and reading qualities like that I do wonder.
In an attempt to educate you.. 1) Connection trouble with web & e-mail. That was mentioned as my whole service went down and came back up but now with Pipex supporting eve. It was not a symptom that I had originally as you may have noticed from earlier posts of mine where I mentioned only eve being blocked.
2) Tunnelling and account stolen. Have you searched for the massive replies from Devs saying don't tunnel in it's a security risk? Don't bother because you won't find any.

Good on you for providing the service people's ISPs seem reluctant to.

1. You gave people false hope regarding a possible pipex fix on the basis that you lost connection over a period of hours and EVE was connecting again when it returned. The key part of your post being all the hours in between, wherein you were slowly ticking outside of peak time packet shaping.
2. ahahahaha you rely on devposts to make decisions

Gents, lets all calm down here. We should remember that this thread is full of very upset people, who are having their favourite past time heavily disrupted by Tiscali and its pets, some of these emotions are bound to overspill a little.
As I have stated before, Ofca's solution is based on an industry standard secure management technique for firewalls, and as I understand it, the native Eve traffic is encrypted within this encrypted tunnel. So there is little chance of details being stolen.
At a TCP level, individual ports are directed through this tunneling, so its just your Eve traffic, no mail or browsing, just encrypted Eve traffic. And the tunnel is only up when you specify.
I have been using Ofca's excellent solution for a couple of weeks now with no problems at all. It's not a permanent fix, but I can definitely recommend it to anyone who is currently having problems

I gave people false hope? So when it works and I tell people as much (and I'm not the only one here to say as much) Thats false hope? Apologies for my crystal ball not working and figuring out that the connection would fail a few days later.
Dev posts help guide folks and help determine what is against the EULA and yes for that I depend on them. I take it you don't care about such things.
Feel free to carry on with your absurd comments. I fancy a laugh.

I tend to answer in tone compatible with the question. It raises chance, that the answer will venture from eyes to where it's supposed to get to. I also tend to believe, that at least basic research should be done before shooting with names at anyone, especially if traversing through areas of expertise that you have little or no competence in - you never know who may be on the other side of the name-gun ;) - if you feel offended by tone of my reply, I deeply apologise - it was all done for your convenience! :>

Been with Pipex for years with no problems. Earlier this week started getting chopped from Eve during ępeakĘ hours (i.e. normal hours for most people who work etc). Called Pipex to request my MAC earlier today.
Was asked why by the customer services guy so explained about traffic shaping issues with Tiscali/Pipex and he pretty much said yes they do have problems with that and no there was little point me taking it up with technical support.

Sadly didn't ask his name as he did as I asked. Called the number in point 5 of this page if that helps: Pipex bug out instructions As for my contract I'm on an older package that is billed quarterly in advance and I have about a month left on I suppose I'll loose out on a few weeks I've paid for.

Thanks for the swift reply. I will be calling them tomorrow, as I am honestly so fed up not being able to play. I did however upgrade from a 1mb to the 8mb connection last year October. Suppose that adds a wonderfull 9 months lft on contract.
However, if I quote/mention that PIPEX have moved me onto Tiscali's LLU without notifying me of doing so, plus providing a decremantative (sp?) service which stops me form connecting to online game servers whenever I want, could it not mean they have breached the contract with me?
Heres to hoping. Thanks me Signature |

i have been on the phone to tiscali and after giving them some abuse, they gave me an email address to complain to (will publish below) and guarenteed i would get a response. and on the plus side, after threatening them with a court case for 'breach of contract' (dont know if there is such a thing, but it sounded good at the time. tehe) they said that if i mentioned, in the email, the fact that i am not recieving the 'unlimited' package im paying for and that i expect to be refunded for the period i have been effected, then i WILL recieve a full refund!
....we'l see....
gona email them tomorrow and see what happens then!

If they wont let you outta your pipex contract just complain to CISAS, see below ======
Dear Dope Hat
I have received your case from CISAS and would like to get this resolved outside arbitration.
I can see that you have been charged a cancellation fee and to bring this issue to a close you would like this refund, I am more then happy to arrange this if you are happy to close the CISAS case.
I will have the credit raised on your account today and have it refunded in the next 5 working days. Please reply so I can have this arranged and know that you are happy to close the case.
Many thanks
Yours Sincerely

@ Snaith;
No luck for me. I am a PIPEX user and have been informed by PIPEX NO-CUSTOMER SUPPORT dept. that I am on the Tiscali LLU now. I cannot register on the Tiscali forums as they will not accept non-Tiscali customers to post there (does not mak sense seeing at all).
Needless to say, no Eve yet again tonight. Wife is not to happy now, as I am now demanding to watch Sky+ and she does not like sharing the remote
Enjoy Eve all you lucky people Signature |

Tiscali are still getting press on this issue, which is good as it keeps the pressure up until it is fully resolved. Link to new one at the bottom.
Seems the majority have got a fix, though some Pipex people are kicking off, and one or two Tiscali customers are still stuck and are complaining on their forums.

That's going to increase over time, no necessarily from us, but from ppl discovering they're been migrated without being informed and then discovering it's going to cost them an extra 49 quid to move to another isp, regardless of which they choose.
Yes you read that correctly, if Tiscali or Pipex moved you to llu you nee c to pay to leave because a bt engineer has to physically disconnect you from their crappy network. -------------------------

Tiscali have now removed the Eve support sticky from their forum.
After the "fix" the complaints did seem to end, so fair enough , and I think we can consider problem sorted.
Obviously if you still have it, go to the boards and get a "ticket".
So I would like to say a thank you , to all those that helped in getting the ISP to relent and take us seriously, making what we were told was a matter of no significance, into a big issue and forcing them to get Eve reconnected during peak times after what has been many months, some will say years.
In particular those that relentlessly hassled, national newspapers, tv progs like watchdog, ofcom , gaming websites , mags and forums and raised the awareness of people to their problems and causes.
A special big thanks for the help getting some articles in prime spots, particularly in the news section right on the Tiscali suggested and linked speedtest site, that one was so sweet
It all forced Tiscali to start having to make press releases about the 40 THOUSAND+ hits and the 60 PAGES of complaints that were on their support forum, hard to say it wasn't a problem with that level of dissatisfaction.
I would like to add , it did show that just leaving was not the solution here, as many suggested, it just meant the "leaver" was a problem gone away.
Only by raising awareness and hurting potential future customers and mounting bad publicity did this work. we knew it wouldn't be quick, but it had to be done for all those "trapped" with their ISP.
So thanks everyone, and happy Eveing.

Brief update, Tiscali forum did break so it seems, and wiped out the main thread with the 40k hits and pages of complaints.
Make of that what you will.
A brief P.S. to the above post.

Wow what a thread. I read the first few pages, and could sympathise with people's problems. However I thought with the thread being so old, my problem with Eve and Tiscali would be long gone, and that I was likley having some other problem.
Well was I wrong or what!
I have only been playing eve for about 2 weeks now, so I cant comment too much on my ability to play as I meant to be. Although this weekend I have been having problems with logging in. It seems my client starts, but the server doesn't connect. If left for a while, it may find the server, however the status remains unknown. I have cheked Eve Offline, and the stats show no irregularities over the last few days...
This has only happened today and yesterday though, but between the peak hours of 16:00 and 12:00 (weekend peak hours). Since I started trying today, since 17:00 I havent been able to log in. And If its anything like yesterday, I wont until around 12:00 tonight. I tried last at 11:30pm last night, and then succesfully at 12:30~.
Im thinking of moving over anyway. I found a great wiki page once that listed different policies in a comparison chart. Like Traffic shaping, and limited uplod/download and many others. I just spent a good 30 mins and cant seem to find It though. If anyone knows it, that would be great.

Here we go. It may be slightly outdated, but still provides a good general guide. Of course if you chase one of the providers up, be sure to check the small print, incase the wiki is wrong. And dont forget to update wiki too :)
