Did you use a torrent or get it off one of the official mirrors?
I used this link http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/EVE_Premium_Setup_84063_m.exe

I however agree, the new patching system is an improvement over the old.
It's alot more likely those who have issues will post and ask for help/frustrated, than those who have it working. I just thought I'd give some positive feedback as well to balance it up a bit.
I agree

If you are in endless cycle of patching after downloading 2gb patch..
http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/evepremiumpatch84063-84244_m.exe
That is, if you get to the stage of having 84063 and it says you need 2Gb patch.. quit and run that patch.

New systems do not come with a system partition and a data partition. Mainly those experianced in IT have those 2 partitions. Its not common practice!
Not to mention that it's fairly common in the MMO industry to force downloads to your system partition. I can personally think of several others that do this. Anyway, this is not a forum for attacking the devs, rather a place to discuss actual issues with the patch.

New builds from Dell etc normally have a hidden "Recovery Partition" accessible via the BIOS or bootable CD in case you FUBAR your OS

Hey forumites waiting out the patch time, question:
I normally DL files at 150 kb/s, however for the patch I'm hitting around 50-76 kb/s.
I'm guessing that it's from all the people downloading the patch at once and it's hogging all that shiny bandwidth. Could I be wrong?

Same here. You should be able to download these files manually (they need to be in the same folder):
http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/evepremiumpatch75883-84244.exe http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/EVEPREMIUM.5.20.75883-6.10.83913.RTP http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/evepremiumpatch83913-84244.exe http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/EVEPREMIUM.6.10.83913-6.10.84244.RTP
EDIT: If you need them for several computers copy them before applying the patch because the patcher will delete the .rtp files. Also I added a link to the patcher from 83913->84244.

I will seed Chribbas's torrent during the night to help less fortunate fellow Eve-players get their fix. I don't understand why CCP didn't publish a torrent to begin with.

dl'ing it now. Will increase bandwidth once autopatching is done.

Client patcher gave me only some 40kb download. Fallback now hops between 120 and 190.
Still I would like to have the whole .exe file for download - like it used to be. Much more reliable imho. And a CCP torrent for those guys using it - like it used to be.
That "manual" download is still only an autopatcher.

Crazy ass download speed CCP nice job!! Started downloading at 1.5MB/sec and peaked at almost 2MB/sec. But held pretty steady at 1.8MB/sec most of the time. This patch took me almost no time to download. :) Keep up the good work CCP!

Edited by: Ezekiel Sulastin on 10/03/2009 12:57:15 Yaaaaay, more massive backstory update which the players can't even see, let alone participate in.
I can't be the only one here who feels some slight tinge of loss at never having been able to participate in any of the backstory events back when CCP cared and trusted enough to let players do them. Now instead of helping the relief effort or chasing a stolen Titan around or guarding a cloak prototype, we sit during patch day and watch everything happen, logging back in to ogle some switched station models and an invulnerable LCO. Wheeee.

I'm very interested in knowing how CCP has such a ridiculous (in a good way) download speed, I imagine such bandwidth would require a considerable investment on CCP's part.

Edited by: Ruffles on 10/03/2009 12:59:00 This first part was a deliberate test, and I'm sorry to say it failed.
I attempted to run the update in a limited user account. The game fired up and stated there was a new update, and I proceeded to choose the option to download it. I wanted to see if it would actually check to see if it had permissions to run the patch before downloading the file, or if it would just download the file what would be the effect if, as I assumed, the patch would fail.

I believe your patcher fails to check if the user has adequate rights to install the patch before starting the download process. If running the client in a standard User account, as will be becoming increasingly common considering the recommendations of Least User Access (LUA) to minimize risk to internet viri, they will have insufficient rights to perform an installation, however your patcher will still download the files and try.
In this case it should check first if the user can perform the update or ask if it can save the files in a user specified location for running by an account with adequate rights to do the update.
However, if the patch fails, the files are deleted forcing the user to once again download the files in full! Excuse me for saying so, but that seems really daft folks!
Here you have created additional problems for yourselves, not only increasing network bandwidth usage during this upgrade, but by forcing the download via BITS for each client rather then giving the user a choice, you have missed out the opportunity your users often take advantage of, of being able to offer a single consolidated download that can be reused on multiple machines at a users property. You could offer this on the first page of the patcher, instead of the last page after the patcher has failed. Perhaps offering an option on the first page to allow the user to choose if they want to use the Auto-Patcher, or download the manual patching file, and then perhaps use BITS to download the appropriate choice.
Furthermore, whilst BITS is great for a single home users pc, more and more regularly you will encounter homes with more then one PC, and sadly large downloads utilising the whole network will sadly affect others on the LAN. It might at least be wise to offer users the capability of also setting a maximum download bandwidth to consume. Sadly a lot of your existing users have download managers that they would use to do this job downloading large files from your site, so it looks like you've created a download manager yourselves but left out some of the essential options.
Classic comment all developers should know: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Whislt we understand this is most likely a one off big upgrade, there will be other potentially big upgrades in the future, and in a game which encourages multiple accounts for a player, why one earth would you force each computer to have to separately download a patch, and delete it rather then encourage reuse of the patch at one site?
At least offer the capability at the beginning of the patch to choose to save the patch files for reuse on another system, or give the user the choice of where to save the patch files or something. This new update mechanism could learn something from the old deployment mechnism that was used to great success prior to today, or at least from other download managers if you intend to keep this BITS route.

While it is true that I have a degree in CIS, I am not lying. This XP install is a brand new install I did about three weeks ago, and it is a textbook default installation, which I didn't even stick, using just an unattended installation floppy, which had pure default settings. My Vista laptop which I bought at a retail store, also has a system partition, as does my brother's (Bought at the same place) and my mom's which was bought maybe three years ago (Running XP). All three laptops were retail installs, and have system partitions. My brother's desktop was also a Best Buy special, and is setup with a system partition. The only computer that DOESN'T have a system partition is my Win2K Server box, which runs my website and a couple of games...
