Originally by: Aslan Inbarr I have to say I'm amazed that there are people who play and understand eve that actually took the initial downtime estimate seriously.
You're amazed that Eve players assumed a basic level of competence at CCP. I doubt the point you are thus making was quite the one you intended. Yes, it's a complex task, but CCP's inability to come up with a realistic ETC is simply not good enough.
I haven't read every post in this topic, but the majority of the complaints are not, as you seem to think, about the length of time the changes are taking but the overrun. If CCP had originally given an ETC of 23:00, you would be making a valid point. They didn't. You aren't.
CCP, like any other gaming company out there, is going to put out their best (case) estimate. They are very rarely accurate. Therefore people are quite naive to believe them. That was my point. I expect a bit more wisdom, or at least cynicism, out of the Eve crowd.
As for the first part, you are right, I could have worded that a bit better.
And cynicism you will get. Their estimation was c*** and if you don't believe someone with which you have a serious relationship (they get paid right?), theres a problem. I don't care if it takes 3h or 2d, I only care about them giving completely remote ETCs to their customers.
Now that made me laugh. They get paid, that doesn't mean they are your *****. If you are unsatisfied with the service, don't pay for it anymore. Move on. If there is an equal or better product for you out there, pay for it instead. *shrugs*

Except the hour or two the server serving the static page was down and all we got for updates was "connection refused" :)

Two things:
1. These 'downtime threads' are one of my favorite parts of the Eve experience. Everything from conspiracy theories to recipes. Keep up the good work, people.
2. For CCP, I always thought that it was best to say "Maybe we can have it running by tomorrow." Have it up in half an hour, and be thought a hero, than say "We'll have it up in half an hour." Not get it up til the next day, and look like a goat. I guess it's a management strategy thing, though.

they don't have any competition. they can do whatever they want lol.
i always think it's a good idea to announce a longer outage window than you expect it to be. that way you have yourself covered if things go seriously wrong, and if things go smoothly and you bring it back up before expected, people applaud you.

The rule in things like this is to try to do this in the quickest way possible. But when doing large things like this things go wrong. I do think CCP needs to compensate players for what happened today on the fact that this was supposed to be an 8 hour deal and now its going far closer to 18. I hope everything does end up alright but sometimes crap happens. Hopefully everything is now on the new schedule and we can get back to buisness when its over.

CCP should reimburse all the whiners for their lost game time. Mail out those cheques for 50 cents but don't forget the suitable shipping costs, 5 dollars should suffice I would think.

As a member of a technical change advisory board it just seems like a few key things were missed in the planning stages of this endeavor.
The reality is we are into an unscheduled downtime situation and if my organisation pulled that kind of stunt we'd be "fined" by our clients and suffer reputationally as well. The clients would not be asking us why we didn't come back at 2130 as per the last estimate, they would be asking why we were not up at 1500, what was being done to resolve the problem and what backup was in place to get us on in the mean time. Having a few problems with some pieces of kit doesn't translate as "dodgy kit from a supplier" it translates as "didn't have contingency in place"
As it stands, the EULA protects CCP financially so they know they can just take as long as they want, so it costs them nothing to give the best estimate time and then just extend the window until it's done.
Treat us users like we are your best client and the company next door offers a cheaper identical product.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

Its not CCP's fault its taken so long, the project will take what the project will take. Unfortunately, IT Project Managers go to the same school as Civil Service Project Managers - they never estimate the time right, and i think whoever teaches them how to use MS Project keeps making them look at the optimistic timeline.
Its just a fact of life. IT Project Managers have no idea how long things really take! Send them out to some construction sites - they're not quicker, they just learn how to set more realistic milestones.

Here is what I recommend set your dead line long enough to allow for issues (for ex you could have said it would come back at 23:00 in the first place to allow for issues even tho you expected it to come up at 15:00) and if the server comes back sooner then the posed deadline people will be happy instead of complying and ranting. Seriously it's not that hard of a thing to do.
+1 for this. Dont give us super optimistic deadlines, since we all know you fail at them anyways. In fact some one might make solid claim is misleading consumer advertisement on this. Better to reserve enough time in advance and of all goes well come back online early then this rulette of 4-5*exteded downtime.
since we all know you fail at them anyways
lol - yeah, but I am against all the CCP-griefers complaining right now.
I didn't know about the server switch until an alliance member wrote in Alliance chat to make sure we set a very long skill to train for it - he nailed it on the head, but - to be honest - if I had been paying attention and read the news of what they are trying to do (right now), I, too, would have automatically guessed the server would never be up in the amount of time stated.
If any of you did believe it, well, welcome to eve, I'm sure your first week had you learning a lot of stuff! And now you just learned a little more. Still, we appreciate CCP (most times), and we play on.

/me gleefully reading through this thread, amused by the raw anger some have over a game being down for a few hours longer than expected and wanting a refund that might at top end amount to $1.
I now think that there might be more than one of these kids out there now...
