You are not the only one. For the past two or three weeks I been getting random disconnections happening at varying times, whilst my virgin cable is fully stable with everything else. Despite bug reports, still heard nought and game is now getting unplayable. I cannot risk lowsec or 0.0 with my alts.
CCP: news please. -----------------------------------------------

I had this "Socket closed" issue the first time today, twice in a row. Don't know where it comes from, I didn't change any Eve client or system settings I am aware of.

Edit: Three times now.
Welcome to the afflicted.
I played a little at a different spot, different ISP. It was perfectly clean. I'm no longer sure if it's my household's annoying security, our ISP (Rogers) or both.

Add me to the Afflicted, it's been happening in random intervals so asking to reproduce it is nearly impossible, Running 2 clients on the same computer 1 will drop a socket the other will stay connected so it can't be my connection right? Located in the USA, East Coast, ISP is COX. I would def say this is happening on the servers side.

I made a topic not realizing that there was one already about the problem. I thought it was the wireless and router issues. Now I know it's not just me. :(

Edited by: Xantor Bludberry on 07/01/2009 17:24:55 CCP, Devs, mans, guys..... You`ve created such great universe, but how it can be if I can`t play about a month?? Yesterday, suddenly I was able to log in to game, I though it fixed already, but today, 5.30 at EVE Time I was disconnected cause "The socket was closed". I`m shocked. I`m... I just can`t believe in this. Why??? Why it happening? I`ve lost 3 or 4 week. Who will compensate me than time?? This is not malfunction of my computer, nor my internet provider. Today morning I spend 330 mil for 30 day PLEX, get extended game time, but all I can do - its only skill-switch using my Nokia N91 as GPRS modem. Of course, I even can`t think to play with this connection, I`m not masochist... Do something!!??? Please!!
P.S. Sorry for my bad English.

This has happened to me every few mins i log in five times in a row tonight. I also noticed its kicking me offline because if im streaming music it stops and i am also getting signed out of msn etc as well, so eve is actually taking down my entire connection for a few seconds. I really am at my wits end. |

Hello all,
This is very old problem with EVE - it just has different effects after each client patch / upgrade. I also filled petitions, including LogServer files, Visual Traceroot logs, Wireshark caputres etc. I chased my ISP as well, but there was no improvement. Recently the random disconnects disappeared, but I still have to retry 10 time to log in intially. Just a couple of days ago I had a chat with my Network engineers and they told me, that our ISP uses FreeBSD machines for shaping tha bandwidth and for some other purposes. The FreeBSD kernel has integrated ICMP filter (this is the protocol used for Pings) that discards ICMP packets if they are more than 100 (default value) within a certain amount of time. When you run the Ping command with -t option it generates ICMP packets from the client PC and sends them to the EVE gateway, but there is a time delay between each ICMP packet being sent. As a result you don't see any packet losses. On the other hand, from time to time the EVE client generates ICMP bursts (multiple ICMP packets w/o delay) to the EVE server for some unkonwn reason. It seems to me that if the FreeBSD Server @ my ISP discards some of the ICMP packets, because of the ICMP filter, the EVE client screws up... I've asked my ISP why they use FreeBSD to do shaping and ICMP filtering - the answer was the following: "A cluster of modern IBM/HP servers with FreeBSD OS is more than capable to process huge bandwidth & millions of packets for fraction of the cost of a Cisco / Juniper hardware device. With the current Internet prices we prefer to use FreeBSD to do the job. The ICMP filtering feature protects us from ICMP Denial of Service attacks.". Period.
This means that I can't make them to remove the ICMP filter and at the same time EVE Support have never commented why the EVE client generates so many ICMP packets? This is Paragraph 22 situation...

Not sure if this is coincidence tonight or not, but in windows vista I ran the game tonight in Administrative mode and it hasn't crashed yet, and I usually get kicked every 10-15 minutes since last patch came out! |

Your wasting a post here, its nothing to do with admin mode, its just not as common tonight the socket closed problem. With me ive had it around 6 times since 7pm, its still there its just not every few minutes like it was yesterday. So please don't come on here with such a pointless attempt at a fix that is no use whatsoever. If its worked after a few days fair enough but after one evening then just keep quiet. |

Wow I didnt know post space was so tight, thanks for being an ASS I was just trying to help... a simple reply that this was actually a coincidence would have sufficed, but instead you decideed to be a ****... thanks for that... |

This is happening to me as well. Played EVE for a week and just today I've been dropped constantly with this same error. Running with Cogeco Ontario, did a pingplot and it wasn't them I was having a problem with.
Please resolve this soon.

It seems like something don't let me to login server, cause I can see the number of pilots in TQ, EVEMon works too. Thus, it`s not problem of port 26000, and not bug of my ISP. In username and passwords fields I can type any abracadabra and I get the same effect - authenticating line slowly fill up, and I get the message "The socket was closed".
