I've having this as well. Just came back from a long break. My disconnects are usually anywhere from 30 seconds -> 5 minutes right after I log in. Ping plotter shows: Hop Sent Err PL% Min Max Avg Host Name / [IP] 3 20 0 0.0 7 18 9 - 4 20 0 0.0 20 25 21 - 5 20 0 0.0 20 30 21 rd2ec-ge6-0-0.il.shawcable.net [66.163.65.25] 6 20 0 0.0 130 191 136 peer1.ams2.telecityredbus.net [195.69.144.113] 7 20 0 0.0 129 299 138 mailtx.2zxr.com [217.20.44.10] 8 20 0 0.0 128 259 136 mailtx.2zxr.com [217.20.44.10] 9 18 18 100.0 0 0 0 [-] 10 20 0 0.0 128 135 129 [87.237.38.200]
Getting character selection screens that don't load the character information. (just news on the side and empty boxes.) Disconnects have been happening in station, as I have yet to venture beyond due to these drops. All drivers good, Winxp 32bit, 8800GT, switch and router. ______________________________________ -Industrial Specialist- -Universal Exports- |

Add another frustrated socketeer.
Didn't have this problem since the recent minor QR patch. Every 10 minutes here, 40 minutes there...I believe it occurred 5 times last night alone.
The only benefit to "The Socket Was Closed" is I can occasionally stay connected long enough to scan down a system and scoop all the T2 drones of other players who've gotten Socketed and Disco'd by CCP. So, thanks fellas.
However, after reading the thread, it's nice to know I'm not alone with getting Socketed.
FWIW, I'm on Verizon FIOS, US Eastern Standard Time.

I am convinced that a lot of the issues is with the connection routing through Level3 hops. I was seeing huge issues with packet loss and flat out crashing on an unkonwn.Level3.net hop. CCP was claiming that this was not the issue and I need to deal with my ISP. So, I went to my ISP, they researched the whole 18 hop route. They then changed my route to a new 14 hop one that bypassed the Level3 hops. Guess what? I haven't been dc'd since. This is going on 3 weeks now. So, run pingplotter and see if you are hoping through Level3. If you are, try and see if your ISP can change the route away from them. Those of you in the UK may be SOL, but the rest of us may be able to deal with this issue.

I'm going to give that a try; I have 11 hops to the server, and the 10th is an unidentifiable with a 100% packet loss. I'll see if Verizon FIOS can work any magic.

You know what the worse thing about all of this is. Is that CCP seems to think it is an issue on our end. Since I am not allowed to post conversations between myself and the GM's I wont, but all I can say is that the solution I was given was completely inadequate. So until this is fixed I stopped paying for my accounts, and considering the support service I received I doubt I will be coming back. Just when I had finally gotten my hulk too.

This began happening to me just a couple days ago. It's definitely a routing issue who's origin lies within the Level 3 network. The L3 Cleveland hop has a real high latency and the hop right before Tranquility doesn't even respond.
These sorts of issues with Level 3 tend to sort themselves out not too long after they appear. I'm more concerned about that last hop before Tranquility, as it's likely whats causing so many of us this closed socket issue.
I hope CCP gets in touch with Level 3 about this matter, and soon. I very much dislike losing my drones and being forced to not deploy them. D:

The Unknown Level 3 hop that I had the issue with was the last hop before reaching CCP. I still see packet loss on the Eve server, but no disconnects since the route change away from Level 3.

Yes, after 15 pages--the most recent ones highlighting multiple pinplotter data identifying the hop right before the Tranquility server as the primary issue--various players from across the globe have the same problem, and the single common denominator is the hop before the server...So, how do we get CCP to acknowledge it?
And no, I don't think cancelling a subscription is going to do it.
There's got to be another way. Wait it out, perhaps?

Long term player- absolutely minimal tech knowledge checking in!
Because I dont have much technical know-how could someone who does please compress the info in the last 15 pages into something remotely manageable for us morons out there. So far this is what ive got from the 3+ months of this bug...
Description/ Summary of Problems
# Eve will crash at seemingly random occasions for some people, right from logging in (authentication>>char selection) through to simply being afk in space?
# Personally I find that Eve can and will sometimes run for hours without crashing BUT when it does crash the crashes are frequent and sustained (such as 7-10 log in attempts before finally logging in)
# Several error messages appear ranging from "Connection to server was closed" to "Socket connection was closed" (paraphrased!). Ive also been getting "the transport was unable to complete and connection was closed" or something like that- the message displays briefly before eve crashes back to login screen.
# Multiple occasions the crashes lead to Blue Screen crashes requiring hard resets
# Settings are generally lost on these hard resets- but remain on the normal crashes.
# Personally my crashes seem to happen during session changes (gate jumps, docking/undocking opening market info/ changing item info on market, logging in, opening eve-mail and using show info etc) but others have stated its completely random.
# Problem only began with QR patch- prior to this no problems with connectivity (beyond the normal/expected d/cs or lag induced de-syncs etc) occuring
Possible Fixes (or non-fixes from my experience)
1. Re-installing fresh client/ Fresh d/l of client WILL NOT FIX THIS PROBLEM
2. Possibly changing the port/socket that Eve uses has been suggested (NEED FEEDBACK HERE- DOES THIS WORK???)
3. Contacting ISP and inquiring about possible packet-loss/ doing pingplotting or tracing the connection commonly shows packet loss/ connection drop
4. Something about the bottleneck/ Packet loss connected to Level3 isp/server?? (Please confirm???)
5. Others have simply waited it out and eve has returned to normal (not a good suggestion nor one that has worked for me)
6. Log reports are/are not useful (Please confirm)
I hope that helps but a more indepth summery would be nice from anyone who knows more about this then me please... Im dying here with these connection drops

13. Apparently openning high volume chat helps stop the D/c once you can log in. Open up a high volume chat such as the Help channel. Not a great fix but worth a mention...
14. Hawktt post 289 provides info regarding how packets are constructed and sent via ISPs and the Eve server (I think... again over my head ) From what I gather he is suggesting that high volume ISPs use a type of technology that can/is incomparable with the way the eve client sends packets over the net. (Again correct this info if wrong)
15. Nestor on post 331 suggests another program to help optimise connection settings.
16. Suggestions have been made that when the client crashes back to login screen, close the client completely before attempting a relog as more often then not, your connection/ socket will close.
17. Post 381 suggests possible conflict with Dell software.
18. Post 386 offers another connectivity solution.
19. Post 397 offers link to CCP port changes from 26000 but as mentioned before this has been shown to not work for most players.
OK guys thats ALL the relevant info from Page 1- now. If you are continuing to have problems
*DO NOT CLUTTER THIS THREAD WITH RAGE QUIT THREATS.
* If you must threadnought the GD forum.
* DO NOT POST GM CHATS- mods are deleting them anyway. It will not accelerate a fix.
* Actually try any/all the above approaches and IF THEY WORK LET US KNOW. Even if its a sh*tty temp fix it might narrow down the problem for CCP.
* Continue running/filing bug reports ping plotting.
From the data in this thread I am concluding the following
1) 90% of eve are emo-raging children. 10% are actively trying to fix this and should be commended.
2) The problem more then likely was developed out of the QR patch, possibly in the Exe file. It is adversely affecting connections via routers or more likely through packet distribution.
3) Several servers in the later stages (hops?) just before info gets to the Eve server appear to be having difficulty in processing eve related packets. These are located in London, apparently.
4) Therefore client type, isp, OS and connection type are probably not the root cause of the problem but may contribute to it.
5) Third party programs may help streamline or remove the problem as a stopgap fix.
6) Diverting away from the afor mentioned servers might fix this but I dont know how to do this or if its even possible.
7) CCP are aware of the problem- continue applying pressure to make sure this is a high priority for them until they actually come on here and state in bold that it is their biggest priority!
Phew- hope that helps fellas. Find me a fix plsthxbye.

Edited by: Nerasel on 15/02/2009 18:30:56 Same thing happends to me... I played Wow for about 8-9 months without a single connection problem, i played Eve trial without a single glitch, now that i started to pay for it things like this start to happen more often than ever!
:( i sent a petition, got an answer in about a day with 100 things i must do in order for them to find the problem, i did those steps, sent them all the results and now i'm waiting for a reply for 4 days and counting. In wow people got upset if they received an answer in more than one hour, this is ridiculous... And I bet when i do get a reply they're gonna tell me "Ah well it's your isp's fault.. i mean, not us, no way, we're perfect over here"
Edit: Also reinstalled windows, drivers, connection, eve itself, everything just to make sure it's not from my computer's fault.... What are these guys getting paid for? Are they hireing ? because I want to join if this is how things work over there :/

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 15/02/2009 22:13:35 I run 4 accounts in total and it happens to me as well.
PC: E6700 8GB ram 4870X2 Vista 64 Went back to classic (also happened at premium but classic seems more stable)
At times it will just close a client, it SEEMS as if it hapens after the client not being touched for a while. Thing is, if one goes I can almost with certainty say that a second one will follow shortly. They seem to drop in pairs for some reason. Andyes; cache is cleared etc etc etc.
I get the feeling that the client is happy idling and doesn't have any problems but when you give a command, or open a window/map whatever it goes "erm, err.... I think I lost connection" and closes.

One thing that has worked for me, although it is a pain to do is the following.
Connect to EVE like you normally would, wait for the socket closed error, without closing the client I go to my router unplug it wait around 10-15 seconds plug the router back in and log back into EVE. I've done this several times and it has worked. Its not a 100% fix, i think there was a couple of times where I had to do it again, but other then that I could play for hours without being disconnected.

I've also been getting this problem for the past month or so. I find that if I set pingplotter to test at 1.5 second intervals and have it running the whole time eve is on I actually stay connected. I also turned off shadows and have two chat windows with 300+ players on it. Result, the client stays active without dc's. I hope this helps at least some people.
P.S. I was also getting that 100% packet loss on the last hop.

I can confirm that I've run PingPlotter for more than 36 hours while playing EVE and I haven't had a socket disconnect.
I still see the 3rd hop before CCP server as the problem, but somehow PingPlotter overcomes this weak hop.
I set the PingPlotter to collect 1500000 samples which is more than enough to last me an entire EVE session.
I did have one socket disconnect, but that was because PingPlotter was set to collect 1500 samples and so wasn't really running when I got disconnected.
Its still CCP's problem, and this isn't a solution but a work around.
Fix it.
