How is having too push back the server up time lying, if you say too your mother you will be home at 3pm but the bus breaks down on the way home, and you get home at 3:15pm does that make you a liar and you will be grounded for two weeks?
He is just venting like the rest. He has know idea how a server cluster of that size takes to update. Its is always better to work/train/practice/etc to standard not to time. If things need more time then take it, because its the standard and quality that is important not the time.
IF you don't have the quality and standard in mind to start with, then whats your intention?? lol

Neither does CCP, apparently. Claiming that you can anticipate the prolonged downtime does not make CCP look better, on the contrary, since they CLAIM it takes 2.30hrs and it took much more, it make them look less smart than the average forumite. And tbh, that's kind of a shame for any IT professional.
Yeah, a cluster of that size is kind of a mess to take down and update. Still, SINCE it's a mess to take down and upgrade, I'd expect them to: 1- try it on a smaller cluster (S8s8/multiplicity?); 2- Adjust the time according to the relative size of the clusters; 3- Adjust the above-adjusted time with a 1.5 factor to make sure you've got time for unexpected problems; 4- Put on a downtime notice reporting 1.5 the time above, just in case
Anyway. Since the last time they took so long, I played on the safe side and added 3 days long skills to training queue. If they take more than 3 days, I'm still gonna get ****ed tho ;)

Yup it's only a game BUT...!
Freighter + WH + Midflight + System occupied by bad people (who are now thanks to this crazy delay are now at their peak time) = Bad for me.
Anyone know if a WH continues to decay during DT?

Originally by: Idgarad A suggestion to CCP that may quell some players:
For any downtime I would suggest taking the median cost of a PLEX and simply credit characters the equivalent amount of ISK for the downtime.
If a PLEX is (for easy math) 300,000,000 ISK (I know they aren't but lets keep the math simple) for 30 days that, in hours is roughly (23*30= 690 hours)or apx 434782.61 ISK per hour. Every time the downtime exceeds the estimate simply credit the character with the highest skill points on an account that amount. There, everytime you miss your ETA you fairly compensate players directly and porportionally for unintented downtime.
You could, based on the nature of the outage throw in a multiplier. For instance x1.0 for the first hour, x2.0 for the second hour, etc.
From a transactional standpoint is isn't hard so long as you have a function\proc for adding an ISK transaction and can be applied as the last SQL transaction before accepting connections.
I agree with this appprach...

How bout we complain about the complaints everyone is complaining about? Is that a complaint, or just random complaining?

I saw no merit to your opinion. Except to complain and complain about unexpected problems.
I have a life, but it seems yours is on EvE, have fun with that.
Like everyone else, You have spent the last two hours of your life on these forums waiting for the server to come back up. Your argument is invalid.

meh, I set my skill training up for days (leart that from last time) and now get the entertainment of watching EVE addicts get the shakes as they suffer withdrawl. It is a game, and like anything in the world it is not perfect. Trains run late sometimes, yes its inconvient but a lot of the time there is nothing you can do to change it.
I will sit back, lol at some of the antics here and wait patiently. It is certainly not the end of the world waiting a little while longer for a product this good :)

No, but then this patch is (should be) a process. Just that, not a problem but a series of actions that can be quantified and estimated.
What do you think the test server is for? Is it possibly a place where upcoming patches can be deployed and bug fixed? Why is it difficult? Two servers, similar in all respects, one live, one for testing. You make changes to the test server until you get it working, then...and this is quite straightforward(?)...you apply those (tested) changes to the live server.
Really, in principle, it is a pretty good ( and an industry tried and tested) method.
My tip? Pay some money and employ someone who knows how to manage this kind of thing. Of course, if these **** ups dont affect your bottom line, then just carry on being inept. After all, if it doesnt hurt you financially, why fix it?
Sigh. Another simpleton.
The test server might have a few hundred players on it. Max. Maybe a thousand or two when CCP encourages people to log in to test something specific.
Tranquility, on the other hand, will see 30,000 - 40,000 people on it. They are not the same thing, insofar as testing goes.
This is the same even for something so simple as web development: You put up a site in a sandbox and have a few dozen colleagues bang on it. Push it live and things usually break when you've suddenly got 100,000 people banging on it on an hourly basis.
And you know what ? If you don't like it - Why are you still here ? Why haven't you cancelled your account and moved on to some other, more utopian MMO ?
Grow up.

Try to think beyond the boundaries of "your real world": A lot more programmers than you think of do work on a project a little bigger than you can imagine, did hand the code and database patches to the QA team only a very few days ago after having only one week to fix some serious issues. (Did i mention that those programmers had a hard working month before this patch?)
The project lead tried to do estimates together with the QA team, the programmers, the folks deploying the patch to the database and all those cluster nodes you have not counted into your calculation...
That person that can give exact estimates in this world has to be born imho! Even ancient sons of gods had no clue on such things.

Haha I love it, 1500 UTC comes and they update it to 1600 UTC. They should adopt Montgomery Scott's (Scotty) method of calculating how long it will take to finish. If I recall correctly he multiplies his repair time by a factor of four so he can pull off "miracles." Thank god I set long duration skills for training ;)
