Latest wine (1.1.12) has some EVE-related fixes:
7814 EVE Online mini maps in agent missions/browser are corrupted 10594 EVE Online has several rendering/stability problems 16421 EVE Online fails to start with hardware vertex shaders
I've done some brief testing and the can vouch for the mission mini-map. I was also able to enable HDR with no loss of stability. Shadows still have problems.

I just ran Eve for the first time under Ubuntu 8.10 (64 bit) after a couple days of trying with the Cedega client, Wine, and the "ATI CatalystÖ 8.12 Proprietary Linux x86_64 Display Driver For Intel« EM64T and AMD64 Platform Architecture".
Updating Wine to the new "development release 1.1.12" and including "pre-released updates (intrepid-proposed)" in the Ubuntu "Software Sources" likely made the difference.
My linux kernel is now at "2.6.27-11-generic". Some istalled ATI related packages include the following: fglrx-kernel-source v2:8.561-0ubuntu1 fglrx-amdcccle v2:8.561-0ubuntu1 xorg-driver-fglrx v2:8.561-0ubuntu1 For audio, I'm using ALSA 1.0.17a for an integrated RealTek ACL882 using the "snd-hda-intel" driver.
I was able to run the Clasic client just fine though the frame rates were often less than 30fps. But it's a start.

Edited by: CottageCheese Discharge on 05/01/2009 01:06:43 Edited by: CottageCheese Discharge on 05/01/2009 01:06:19 I'm running the latest wine on Ubuntu 8.10 with an Nvidia 8600m gt graphics card....it kept crashing when I would run pulseaudio in a virtual desktop with in game hardware acceleration on. Once I turned that off combined with pulseaudio set up right, no problems whatsoever - premium graphics is good, the mini-map for the mission journal (and the f11 map) work beautifully. Had to set audio to OSS to prevent the crash. Stable, no hiccups, 60 FPS in a station. HDR works but obviously I don't want to make my FPS *that* low (not like I could run it in fleet anyway).
Here is my command line - I run dual monitors this way (non twinview, separate x screens, no xinerama) and swapping screens/focus does not cause eve to crash at all. I fear what will happen when I try my new dual 4870 crossfire rig with eve, but that's another day's story.
env WINEPREFIX="/home/squishygoodness/wine" padsp wine explorer /desktop=Eve,1366x760 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
Of course, replace squishygoodness with whatever is appropriate for you and of course change the resolution to something less than the xscreen you're running off (so it doesn't get clipped). In order to get the resolution to show up when you boot up the game you have to swap to windowed and back to fullscreen before it realizes that it's a fullscreen desktop at the resolution you chose. No idea why. You will see a pulseaudio virtual oss in game as the device for voice. Note: I have no audio card (integrated) and still works with OSS a-okay.

Ok...so I asked on many forums and browsed many more others....but I have a problem with my eve client.
I installed the one coming with cedega but it's plain bad. It has graphical problems such as lines going out of their windows or the alt-tab command isn't working. neither is the sound...
On top of that it's the classical version and I wanted the premium... so I went and installed wine the latest version 1.1.12 and downloaded eve premium for windows and installed it without problems.... but when I start it, I get the splash screen, the login appears but I get the EULA which is empty. It says "scroll down to continue" but I can't... and I'm stuck there....
I don't have installed anything else in the wine directory (someone said I should put some extra dll files but I don't know which) nor did I toy with the configs in wine too much.
Anyone can help please? Thanks a lot in advance! |

Check the instructions that have appeared everywhere in these forums.
Put arial.ttf in '~/.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts/'. You can get it from the msttcorefonts package. |

I have an EEE PC 901 and I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on it. I know that the Intel chipset is not that great, but I can run Eve on an XP machine with the same chipset. Under wine 1.1.12, the splash screen loads and then it crashes (process vanishes and nothing else happens). That is with the altest premium client.
Has anyone else managed to get this working under wine or is it just not possible because of the chipset?
thanks,

Seems that there is something positive once in a while - I had troubles starting EVE with Wine for some months, it died 90% of the times after the splashscreen. After the last Quantum Rise 1.0.5 patch that problem has been fixed, starts on the first try :) |

I've been using the Linux version of EVE as provided by CCP. I have to say it's really sucky. It loads once fine then if I log out and try to log in again without restarting my computer I just get a black screen - strangely the cursor still loads :) so I'm going to try EVE under wine and see what happens. I'll be sure to let you know what I find. |

Anyone tried 1.1.14 version of Wine? So far, using ubuntu 8.10, I only got the splash screen, then nothing.
I might consider installing 1.1.13 if it gets the game running with premium graphics, even if installing it manually can be a hassle (damn budgetdedicated.com not responding) |

Edited by: Knevah on 02/02/2009 03:47:15 Edited by: Knevah on 02/02/2009 03:42:12 Running a fresh fully patched Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit, I found I could not run the "Native" Cedega client, because it become confused about my multi-monitor setup.
After some experimentation, I found that I can run the Windows client under Wine 1.1.14 and Nvidia 177 (7950GT), not tried premium just yet (WineHQ suggested that it's been tested, but only with Nvidia 180), but I let it create a new .wine folder, and installed the client as normal.
I found it was a bit tempermental about video settings, and it seemed that the best way was to run wine in desktop mode, at a particular resolution, and set the client to full screen... like this:-
wine explorer /desktop=0,1440x1050 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
I also had to install "Microsoft Core Fonts" from the channel, and copy them to the Wine windows/Fonts folder before I could get the client to start, becuase it couldn't display the EULA.
It's been a little unstable when docked, but fine when undocked... which seems odd, looking at issues with the native client, I might try switching to OSS sound, instead of ALSA to see if that helps.. Although there was a comment that there have been some reported problems with Athlon XP CPU's which I'm using, so mabe that's it...
If CCP does read this forum, I'm looking at Wine instead of your native client because the sound settings don't work for ingame voice, the client can't handle multiple monitors and I couldn't run windowed, or use ALT-TAB with the Cedega version. It's not perfect under wine either, but right now it looks better, if I can make it stable. Would love a "real" Linux client.

EVE-ning...
Have been using the official client with success on an old machine (Athlon 2600+, Nvidia 5200) under Gentoo. Thought I'd give the windows client a go under wine 1.1.14 but am having the black screen problem. i.e. after the splash screen I get a black screen with the eve pointer and nothing else... I can CTRL-ALT-F1 out of this and kill the process to get back to my desktop. Am not after premium client here as GFX card is not capable, but does run classic fine.
I have copied the fonts as advised.
My current launch command is as follows (it's in a script) -
wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe "/end /LUA:off"
wine is set as WinXP, I've been through each option and turned it on/off and relaunched but get the same thing. Do I need to change something in the eve config files?
Any ideas appreciated as I think i'm pretty close to getting this going... (I normally use a Mac btw, and wanted to set this machine up so a friend could come round for a bit of pew-pew).... :) |

Edited by: Doublewhopper on 09/02/2009 10:51:08 I have problems with wine on a laptop that uses a GeforceGo 5200 with OpenSuse 11.
The official client delivers around 25 fps. The wine client delivers only around 5 fps.
I tried to optimize the wine client (wine 1.1.14) to reflect all settings from the official client, but there is almost no change in fps.
Is there a comprehensive list of wine optimizations to run eve?
I only found a guide from Sevarus James for the official client. Can anybody help me? |

I've pulled that post down and inserted ccp's letter dropping support for the official client. just fyi.
Also, I HATE to say this, but a 5200 gfx card is at the very VERY bottom of cards supported by EVE (even under windows) and your fps isn't going to be that optimal regardless.
There several threads in this section that have general tweaks to the registry to provide better fps for wine, as well as the eve wiki, and on the wine.org pages there is a general registry section showing the changes necessary.
In general the following section is what needs to be tweaked...this is specific to my system, but should give the general gist:
[Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="hardware" "VideoMemorySize"="640"
Those settings in the user.reg file for wine are generally the changes needed to speed things up. Again, a geforce go 5200 isn't going to produce miracle fps one way or another, but I hope that helps.

I've successfully downloaded and installed the sisi Apocrypha patch here (Wine 1.1.14 on Slack/Nvidia latest stable) I got it up and running but so far running into a few bugs. Approaching gates the screen whites out nearly completely. Had trouble scanning: I wasn't able to select the scan types to process just got an error you can't analyze that many types, but no way of narrowing down the choices. Also noticed a distinct gradual drop in framerates (from 60 down to 5) till I docked, at which point they returned to normal, so there may be a memory leak somewhere. Skill queue works. Maybe we should start a new thread? |

sooo...I successfully installed eve under crossovergames on my ubuntu 8.04 and it was pretty painless. The setup installed the fonts and even directX and so on. I even have premium content and all the bling bling.
The only thing that sucks balls is the horrible framerate... In station I got between 18 and 24 (using that SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+M window) and in space between 12 and 18.
I dont have the numbers of the official Linuxclient but it runs far more fluent..
I play in 2560x1024 on a dual Pentium4 (not dual core..I have to seperate processors) @ 2.8GHz and NVIDIA 7800GTO with the latest drivers.
It does not matter if I leave compiz on or put it off. Framerate stays the same. When compiz is on, I can easily rotate my desktopcube and wobble my other windows, surf through the web and watch videos on other cube-sides...so I think there is way enough power left.
So I stay with the linuxclient as long as I can...even with the broken mousecursor:(
Any hints what I could do for a few more fps?

In winecfg add new exe file (eve.exe) and then click on it go to graphics and define size of window (Emulate a virtual desktop) and try lower resulusion. Then you can play in window with good resolution for you graphics card. 蛸壺や はかなき夢を 夏の月 |

ok...I disabled the premium graphics and it runs like the offical linux client. This is pretty disappointing.. :(
I mean...I can rotate my desktopcube and watch multiple HighDefinition Videos in the background and a high sophisticated software like the premium wine/crossoverGames isn't able to shuffle some highres textures to my graphics card :( |

Apart from the premium client being quite a bit more than "some highres textures", given that the wine developers have to reverse-engineer a big and complex api including "special" behaviour it's very impressive how well things work these days.
You have this in your wine user.reg? [Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="hardware" "VideoMemorySize"="?" Replace ? with the size of your video memory.
