Originally by: Farnett I know that it would be significantly harder to do, but it'd be more applicable to the reality of eve if you could have the influence spread by jumps. For example have outposts extend influence over 5 jumps, and pos over 1 jump. I think it would more aptly represent the distribution of power, and help prevent smaller alliances from being blobed out by the larger ones.
You are reading my mind. In fact, this feature is alredy present on this map. Outposts distribute influence over 2 jumps, and POS - over 1 jump. After each jump the value of distributed influence is multiplied by 0.3. So outposts make 500% in thir system, 150% in 1 jump and 45% in 2 jumps. POS - 100%, 30% and 0% accordingly.

Edited by: Lisolet on 04/03/2007 21:15:35 Best map yet in my opinion. As all the maps before it, it could use some touch ups but this is fantastic.
If you want to remain impartial as possible and still mark warzones you could pull "ships destroyed in the past 24 hours" data and just mark large losses of ships?
Make the border lines slightly less bright. And I think the map would take on a more tactical feel if you made the stations "claim" less space so what you do see it more localized and less "blob of color." I am sure you've tried both but I am still curious.
You're off to a great start.

Very nice map, however there are some adjustments yuo need to make.
1) Eliminate leakage into empire.
2) Make sure your Gradient thingy only applies accross constalletaions/systems, and not open space. The way it is 2 systems that are a dozen+ jumps from each other, but located close to one another physically are marked as the same alliance. Prime example is SMASH alliance, there is the 3 systems TDE, UER and UG, with outpost, POS and POS respectively. But becaue of the outpost the gradient and our 'territory' extends all the way to the left, and encompasses 4 or 5 systems many jumps away that I've never even heard of.
Also, perhaps make it not quite as defined when an outpost is on the very edge of an alliances territory. Again I'm looking at SMASH cause I know the area best, but our space cuts off so harshly. I assume this is because of a cluster of RK POS around K25. Perhaps have an outpost give 2 jumps of space regardless of another alliances 'claimed space'

You really need to read the OP. The beauty of this map is that it displays in game facts .. not political contrivances.
This probably wouldn't be easy to do .. but if you could give your map a little memory .. as in graphicall represent the changes in influence from the previous map.

I just read through the source and scanned the database. I'd know that data was available but never looked at it. Gives some nice insight. I haven't done any Java since college so I only have a rough idea of what's going on, but I like the math.
Try making a quick run with the sovereignty added to the image before the map. This will leave the smaller detail items on top of the larger color patches.
Also, perhaps adjust the nextColor function so that it runs from 256 to 64 or 128, instead of 256 to 0. This should push the colors for each alliance out farther towards their borders, unless I'm wrong about the code. ;P
Again, nice job, great concept and execution. CCP should make a web based version of this that queries the live database every hour, and caches the output to their webserver.

Yeah, I'm entering manually the status of the 800+ sovereign systems. Joke. Of cource it is some kind automated. Manually I have to point the script to where it should gather data. Procedure is very clean and there is no EULA conflict.
It would be awesome if you could make that available to the EVE public also. Also you need to release your source code with a license (BSD license ftw ) or at least some "bull****" that says what we can and cant do with it, else we are violating the law
Really, awesome job on this one! I had a quick look at your database (sql file) and its verry clean, and contains alot of usefull information even for stuff totally unrelated to this.
I'm gonna take a closer look at your java in the next few days, will let you know what i find/improve. ------------------------ Stop reading my siggy! |

Even better, it deserves a it's own page here on Eve-O. This is a completely objective map and truely shows where sovernty is claimed.
Awesome work! It most certainly should be added to the list of maps. How often do you think it will update/be updated?

It's not a political contrivance, they have a station and pos's there. I lived in B-7 with them before invictus took over YM. I think he just missed the outpost.
It is a very interesting concept for a map though. I think it may be overweighting pos's though. One system with an outpost can easily control a couple neighboring constellations depending on the region's layout, while a pos may be just for moon mining and not reflect any real concentration of people in the area at all. As a result, the practical result may be different from the mathematically weighted result. For example, I think you may find, particularly in the new regions, that the "influence" of some of the entities you have there is considerably less than portrayed. I'd honestly stick to outpost systems in calculating this, with some very small % tossed in for pos's. You'd probably find that resulting in a more accurate map.

He didn't miss anything, he just fed in the game data. The reason they're not showing up is because they're being swamped by overwhelming "influence" of their neighbors, which is the map working as it should (if they don't have very many POS / Outpost compared to their neighbours, then its nice to see they're not a major power). If they really want to get on the map, they needc to bung down a few more POSs and outposts --------
