Any suggestions? The only reason I'm messing with colors so much is because it's extremely easy to change and I really don't like the initial colors.
I actually really like the colors, they make everything stand out much better and space is more defined. The only thing I am seeing is that some entities (like TCF, Mercenary Coalition and UNL) names are in the middle of space they dont even control because they have two different "blocks" of space so maybe just put the name over both blocks of space so its a bit clearer. _________________________________ Sig Removed - Contact us at [email protected] with a link to your sig for more details. -Targoviste |

I know about that one and I'd really like to fix it, but the solution (basically creating two+ entries for an alliance if they have separate blobs) is not something I've been able to pull off yet. Looks very good so far. I would recommend brightening up some of the colors if possible.
An example I would point out is my own alliance, Exuro Mortis, in Fountain. In Paladin's map, the influence coloring is much brighter and easier to distinguish, whereas yous fades to black and has a dark tint.
Other than that, superb work. Keep it up.

A new and hopefully last colortest. I've redone several alliances colors to make them stand out more and not clash with their neighbors, and I've increased the intensity of the border line a bit so that boarders are easier to see. This also implements support for multiple sovereignty levels backported from Paladin's notes, so systems with higher sov levels now emit a greater level of influence. (note: NPC influence was turned off for this render).
Tomorrow I'll see what I can do about the name text. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

Very nice Verite. Thanks for putting the effort in. I think the colors in this latest color-test are just right. One can pretty much tell apart all the alliances bordering each other, and most importantly: Goonswarm is yellow. ---

If someone can, I'll offer enough ISK to buy a 30day GTC. You'll want to take a look at the draw section(L371) and the section that calculates influence(L252)
You probably already noticed this but it seems that the problem with the name text location is that instead of generating new names for space that isn't continuous it will just place the name in the center of all that alliances space. You can use mercenary coalitions name location as an example. They have space way up in branch/tenel so their name is being dragged upward.
EDIT: I just read up and saw you already knew this...sorry!

Thanks again Verite: you really are doing us all a massive service! Still wish Paladin would come back though; you guys could, like, totally team up
Anyhow, another feature thats on Paladin's map that I find very handy is that it circles all the Sov changes on the days update with a small white circle. Would that be difficult to implement? --------

Ok Verite, I may be wrong, but you're almost definetly looking in the wrong place in regards to the where the program draws the alliance names. Its actually all done in the drawLegend() method. In particular, the try{} section (line 355) at the beginning, in the first "for" statement you come to on line 368 of the source code Pally linked.
Font aliFont=new Font("Verdana", Font.BOLD, (int)(Math.sqrt(al.count)* quarternizer /30)+8); g.setFont(aliFont); Rectangle2D r=aliFont.getStringBounds(al.name, g.getFontRenderContext()); g.setColor(Color.BLACK); g.drawString(al.name, ax-(int)r.getWidth()/2-1, ay+10); g.drawString(al.name, ax-(int)r.getWidth()/2+1, ay+10); g.drawString(al.name, ax-(int)r.getWidth()/2, ay+10-1); g.drawString(al.name, ax-(int)r.getWidth()/2, ay+10+1); g.setColor(al.nameColor); g.drawString(al.name, ax-(int)r.getWidth()/2, ay+10); g.setFont(defaultFont);
aliFont is the allliance font, which basically has font type, bolded, and the size. The size appears to be based on the number of systems the alliance, al, controls.
Now the first 4 drawString are drawn in black and slightly offset from each other, to make sure the name will have a border I think and be visible on a coloured background. The last drawString draws it in the alliance colour, which was set to line before it. The font is then reset after this is done.
drawString(String, int, int) is the method used.
If I'm reading it correctly, then ax is the average x-coordinate of all systems that alliance holds sov in. Similarly for ay.
So basically, the name is being drawn at (ax,ay). The -(int)r.getWidth()/2 thing is just to center the alliance name on that point, as normally drawString begin drawing the string at the coordinate given, then to the left.
How to fix it? Offhand I'm not positive. I don't have SQL so I can't tinker and see what happens exactly. =D
I suppose in the Alliance Class, you could change the count, x, y, to arrays, and in the run() method, keep seperate values for each region where there is a break in sovereignty. Then in the legend section, print the name multiple times, using the different values in your arrays for count, x, y. Lines 287-289 is where these values are update during run() by the way.
Anyway, hope that helps, and good luck. =D

Changes for Monday(I swear I'm going to stop changing things soon):
1) Circles are in as requested 2) Constellation sovereignty influence is in as per Paladin's notes 3) Salvador Sarpati has made an offer I can't refuse, and now full NPC sovereignty is taken in to account with the map. All NPC systems now emit a level of influence equal to sovereignty level 1. 4) A couple of color changes.
In other news I've been working on an algorithm to solve the text problem, and I have, well, something. Take a look at the latest colortest. It's not perfect and I'm not going to implement it unless I get a good feel for people not minding the shortcomings, but it's one possible solution. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

I suppose you could do the following.
Make a global Alliance[][] sovMap = new Alliance[sWidth][sHeight] variable, and fill it in with links to the alliance in each pixel, null otherwise. To do this, just stick a line in the embedded fors in the run() method, setting sovMap[x][y] = best;
Add a new class, which will basically hold a list of alliance names and the locations they need to be drawn. Rather than the current method of once per alliance, this can handle multiples if needed.
class AllianceTitle { String name; int x,y; ect... }
Use the global variable Vector nameList = new Vector(AllianceTitle);
Then, use a recursive algorithm to eat alliances in the sovMap table. something like
AllianceTitle temp; for(int i = 0; i < sHeight; i++) { for(int j = 0; j < sWidth; j++) { if(sovMap[i][j] != null){ temp = new AllianceTitle(sovMap[i][j].name, 0, 0); eatAlliance(temp, i, j); } } }
Then, you'd have the method eatAlliance():
void eatAlliance(AllianceTitle title, int x, int y){ title.x += x; title.y += y; sovMap[x][y] = null; For each pixel around it that is not null, out of the table or a different alliance, eatAlliance(title, i, j) }
Basically, that should search the sovMap table (which is basically a copy of which pixels have sov colour showing and for which alliance. When it hits an alliance, it will mark that as a titled alliance, then recursively add up all the local x and y coordinates so that you later on can center the title at that location. As it does so, it removes all adjacent pixels belonging to that alliance in the sovMap array, until it can't find anymore.
Then it returns to searching sovMap row by row, doing the same for each alliance cluster it hits. Eventually the map will be completely filled with null values, and you're done. At that point the AllianceTitle Vector should have a list of all names and the sums of all the x,y coordinates for them.
Then in the draw location I explained in the previous post, replace that with these instead. Just go thru the entire vector, and drawString(title.name, title.x -(int)r.getWidth()/2, title.y+10-1);
That's not complete obviously, but I think it should work if you fill in the blanks. Basically, every self contained block of sov colour should have a title associated and centered on it.
Good luck. =D

Glorious work, I love this map. It's easy to read, clear and accurately shows sovereignty. Being involved in the conflict and watching the map from day to day, it's easy to see who is pushing where and which area's are warzone/contested.
Great map and I hope to see it continue on as the greatest map I've ever seen for New Eden.

Great work, just one thing :/ The colours, looking at the current version and the colour test, they need more life in them, if that makes sense. INVICTUS. for instance, I'm not sure what that colour is :/ A nice bright orange would make sense, I see the point of the transparancy but it looks, off.
I hope this makes sense, don't think I have the words to say it right.
