Hmm, lets recap the latest "possible" numbers of SWG.
gamer servers hacked; accounts logged and connected users tracked; prime time access made public:
Bria, formally known as the BIG server exists with 740ish users during primetime! Total across all galxies...almost 10,000 !
Julio Torres anounces "(~80%) of players still in the game were playing before the changes".
Many individuals in the gaming industry accept that a healthy game has about 20%-25% of the paying suscribers active during "prime time".
recap: 10k users during primetime. 20-25% of active subscriptions puts SWG near 40k-50k actively subscribed accounts!!
50k users @ 15.00 per month = $750k
Pre-NGE, SWG was suspected of having near 190k-230k and upwards of 250k subscribers. low of 190k equals $2.85mil per monthly subs. 250k equals $3.75m !
Ok, lets no compare the "loose estimates":
Sony Online Entertainment had been suspected of grossing 3.75million USD pre the "Star Wars Galaxies-new game enhancements" Pose-nge $750k USD.
SOE has lost 3 MILLION DOLLARS per month since introducing the SWG-NGE!
It is February, about three months after the NGE. How much do you think SOE is making of these "new and iconic Starwarzy and iconic charaters that are iconic and starwarzy"?
Too damned funny and a lesson to be learned to gaming studious.
Hats off to CCP!! You guys rock and I have never felt better about a gaming environment as I have about EVE! Your studio is a model for excellance. Post the SOE facts in your studios, all developers need to research this to ensure this mistake is _NEVER_ made again.

I started SWG when it launched. Years figuring out how to become a Jedi. Casual gamer here so once I became FS it took another year to finish grinding and become a full Jedi Knight. Loved the game. Had many friends and a great guild. Was loving PvP, events, the people.
NGE killed it all. My prize, my Jedi Knight (most I've ever accomplished in an online game and I've played UO, EQ, DAoC before) is CRAP. Not only too common now but also arguably the worst Toon in a blaster/ranged world. Hell I think Jedi are the ONLY melee based fighters in the game now. Thanks SOE. You took all my years of pride and work from me. I think the EULA should have it's limits and we should be able to sue.
XBOX FRS NGE... Since I'm playing from remote locations sometimes, I can no longer compete. With lag issues (and this game is the WORST) how the hell can I play an FRS? If I wanted that I'd play Battlefront! (and anyone that swears SWG isn't heading towards XBOX is smoking *****). All my friends are gone. Our guild gone. My work gone.
They wanted a simpler system. An easy system. Don't they know being complicated is good! Look at EVE. I love EVE for that! I also love the fact I don't have to know my way around a console controller to play. No target reticles here. No finger mashing quick response needed. Just level headed decisions, clear mind, and the ability to grasp strategy and concepts. Plus I can play from anywhere! No lag.
Die SOE and go make console games and get out of the Online gaming world. You are ruining everything you touch. I wish I could sue and get my three years back.
Sorry about the rant but this is the single worst gaming experience I've ever had...

G'Day,
AussieXenu from Bria. I still log on from time to time, but crafting is just slowly losing its appeal to me in that system. I only got a glimpse of pre-NGE gaming for a few weeks at most, but EVE reminds me of that so much. The only thing keeping me in SWG at the moment is the first two letters. I haven't grinded my Commando in weeks, and my 3/4 alt toons on Chilastra have all but died.
I've only been playing EVE for about a month now, but i'm loving every second. It looks like it's going to allow me to be the kind of crafter/trader I wanted so much to be in SWG.
I mean, goddamn... Even WoW allows you to be able to make stuff and be capable of defending yourself as well!
Overall, EVE has my vote for a long time.

Edited by: Crae Matreki on 15/02/2006 13:06:28 I was Nunda Kamachupa on Farstar (Sullustan TKM/Swordsman, member of Unity)
I left SWG two weeks after the NGE for lots of reasons, but the main one was this: my character looked really stupid wearing armour!! Sullustans have quite large heads, which makes helmets expand to deathstar-like proportions!
The new combat system was a mess, the professions were dull and lacked imagination, the server was deserted, all my friends were leaving.. the only reason I considered staying was for my house and for my character, which I'd become quite attached to.
When I started playing EVE I didn't think I'd get into it, as I missed having an instantly recognisable character, but I've gotten used to that now. I'd love to see an update that lets us personalise our ships, even just a little, but I can live with the game as it is. I love the way it's player-run, I love the way that we're not limited, I love CCPs attitude to the players.. there's just too many great things to list!

I can imagine things like paint schemes and trim might be difficult, but the one thing I'd really like to see is for the ships to bear your corporate logo.
That can't be too hard - they did it in Descent 2 after all. :)

my first post..i'm still in the trial period, but i'm going to buy at east 6 months when that expires. this game has really come a long way since i first tried it out almost 2 years ago, it's a lot fun.
anywho...i still play SWG, and i still ahve fun with it, but now I have 2 high end PC's, so i can play EVE and SWG at the same time :) I came from Eclipse Galaxy, and for now, EVE will get more of my time then SWG does.

hello and welcome, i played in corbantis under the same name. what can i say?......soe really screwed up the star wars name. swg was an incredibly fun and super duper game prior to the combat downgrade.
the options for players to do or become whatever they want was what made it fun......i quit within a month or two of the cu and have not looked back once.
do yourself a favor and give eve some time. 1) join a corp 2) leave if they dont take care of you 3) only go into .4 and below space when you are prepared to die. 4) insure your ships and update your clone 5) have fun
this is an awesome game.....it just takes a few hours to realize for some people.

Edited by: Xarkon on 16/02/2006 19:32:01 I'm from SWG. I will _NEVER_ go back. Ugh! SWG was my very first graphic online game and it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth over MMORPG's in general. I played SWG for about 1 year or so. Due to kids and family and work, I didn't get to play as hard-core as I would have liked and I only got a level 30-something Jedi by the time the NGE F'd everything up (was about 2/3's done with an Aurillia Jedi). I sold the account to some guy in England for $2.12. Hahaha! Actually, I take that back. I did play Ultima Onlina on a player run shard from Russia. Was a blast! I was almost tempted to keep playing SWG just for the Jump to Lightspeed, but I found about Eve Online and Star War Galaxies was history. On SWG, I mostly enjoyed playing the crafting professions - finding good resources, crafting quality items, underselling everyone on the bazaar and making bank by doing it. Thus, my eager anticipation of playing Eve. Although, I had heard about Eve before the NGE, I stuck with SWG out of emotional attachment to the Star Wars universe. Deep down, though, my emotions are based in space sci-fi, thus my allure to Star Wars and preference for Jump to Lightspeed. I took some astronomy courses in college (some of the best classes I ever took), and, let me tell you, for being a game, Eve gets bloody close to the real thing. Very cool. Eve seems to fit my current life requirements soooooooooooo so so so so much better. I can play with my 1yr old son for 30 minutes. Glance up at Eve for 5 minutes, check the market, make a purchase, set autopilot to sell point and go back to playing with my son. When my son goes to sleep or takes a nap, I can run an agent mission or two. At the end of the day, I am a very happy Eve player, looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow. On top of it all, I set a skill to train, go out on a date with my wife, wake up the next day to a new "level" I've gained on Eve. It all works just too perfect. With SWG, I had to decide which buff (pre-NGE) and/or food was needed for the MOB I was going to hunt, find somewhere to get it, then focus 90% on the game so I could get maximum usage out of that buff. That usually occupied 3-4 hours straight of SWG time. Bleh! What a crock. With Eve, I've watched the superbowl, paid bills, sold eBay, played hide-and-seek with my son, had sex with my wife, filed my taxes, read a book, watched japanimation, had family dinner, rented videos, went grocery shopping, shoveled snow, had sex (did I already mention that? haha! ) all while still "playing" Eve. Yea, Eve is gonna have me hooked for a long time to come. SWG? What was that game about? *snicker*

After reading the producer letters I had to laugh. It is sad how SOE treats their customers. They lack any kind of credibility and yet they still do business. Julio Torres and John Smedley should both be fired. CCP make them look like they dont know what they are doing.

Yeah, I remember making it. I saw at work that my account had been activated. Later I transfered all my isk and stuff to this char from my trial account. Then I made the thread.
Now I have 2.3 million skill points and fly a battleship (which I really cant fly, but its safe for missions). I have lost ships in low sec and got away a couple of times too. I even lived in a 0.4 system for a while running missions, not losing one ship.
I have had someone tell me my ship setup was insane asking me if i liked dying? I had thought I was doing well until I changed my setup to a suggested one. Now I smile at how I had fought my way through all those missions with that insane setup.
I almost lost my battleship posting this. I have offered everyone I met in my corp a copy of the Pax Amarria (I currently have over a thousand). Did you know the M. in M. Corp stands for Minmatar? They dont want a copy of the Pax Amarria.
Now I want a Assault Frigate (something my skill poits will allow me to fly effectively) and at some point I will want to learn to PVP. Something I never really did in SWG.

Yes, well put. I just keep shaking my head when I see how they run the business. I wonder how it will turn out long term. I believe it will be mentioned as a major gaffe in game design and implementation, but both of them will get off relatively unscathed.

The short answer would be: Because CCP spends their development effort into making a game that isn't broken. :)
SWG needs all the flash, to conceal the lack of substance.
