Impending frivolous lawsuits. This isn't the first time by far that something like this has happened in the gaming industry. They acted promptly and such situations are covered in the EULA that everyone has agreed to. If people are thinking about causing completely unnecessary trouble, they might as well save themselves the time, they don't have a legal leg to stand on. ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?" I quit and no you can't have my stuffs I gave it all away already. Last Straw!! You bet. Good bye CCP, I'm sick of your crap anyway. To the rest, the solutions are easy, but hey if they gonna mess up this bad, combined with all the stupid nerfing all the time, and trying to mak all races exactly equal...forget it. Just leave. EVE has reached suckitude, and no, I am not going to play WOW, I have no interest in man on man/man on elf/man on orc/orc on man action. Just going to have to wait for a better internet spaceships violencing game.
WOW, you must be a barrel of laughs when you get a flat tire.
Easy there killer, just making light of my quitting. Nothing to get your knickers in a knot about. Like I said, it was an easy fix, but it just happened to be the last straw. So just chill, don't agree with me, I don't really care, just keep giving everyone else your helpful advice.
Heh, I quit AO after the 12.3 patch *shudder* so I can empathize. Just found the RAWRish tone amusing.

Originally by: LordSwift Why are people getting so angry with this.if you have had the problem, its a very simple fix. There is no need to Reinstall windows!!! Follow the guide given by the devs and all should work fine. There is a small piece of software which should work fine. Not sure of the webpage. but my brother fixed his pc. its called BOOTINIMAKER i think
You are all stupid if you cancel your accounts because of this. Your Loss Losers!!!!
It's quite understandable that people are upset and it's not always a "easy fix"...it depends on quite a few things. If they have 1 or 2 physical disks, if they have partitions or not, if they have a "hidden" boot partition like some HP's and DELL, if they have own knowledge or atleast a friend, if they have 1 more availible PC's since they are not able to read this information if they rebooted.
Probably missed a couple of reasons but I think you get the point.
Lets try to help as much people we can instead to solve this problem.

I never thought I'd see the day I'd say this but CCP, you owe people compensation for this.
Protip for devs reading this: If you didn't name your config files after critical system files, then you could never cripple thousands of computers by an errant backslash in your install file.
This problem was completely avoidable at any number of points. CCP made a bad design choice by using a file called boot.ini. They did bad QA by not catching the issue which can be SEEN from the installer, and they failed to listen to their customers, who reported the problem on the forums DAYS before the patch went live.
This is not the perfect storm, where several uncontrolled variables combined too sink a ship. This is the Exxon Valdez, where a drunken pilot rammed his ship aground due to his own stupidity and inattentiveness.

Ok, I used the second method of checking for the boot.ini file, which is the go to Control Panel, System, Advanced Settings, and then the Start Up and Recovery. The message I get back is "The C:\boot.ini can not be opened. Operating System and Time Out Settings can not be changed."
Any idea where I should go from here?

Thankfully my computer must have booted on a backup copy why that didnt happen for others i dont know. To Solve the missing boot file problem i simply did a system restore to the day before the update, problem solved. Its the simple solution for the non tech folk out there.
It is a bit of a screw up on CCP's part but some people are clearly wanting to milk the situation for all its worth. I thought at the time that it was too good to be true that the game was back up at midnight. Seems like this was a simple typo error that has been overlooked it tends to be the number one problem in programming issues at testing, No doubt it was overlooked because it didnt crash or cause an anomly to the game.

Was anyone else running eve on a mac bootcamp partition? I cant boot back into windows, recreating an INI file doesnt work from my experiments and my bootcamp manager has expired. If anyone has successfully got it back up and running would like to hear from them.

Question....is it now possible to 'upgrade' from classic to premium now? Or is it best to install the premium from scratch?
Thanks in advance.

I installed the patch just before Dt today, not premium version (24 mb in total, since i have an older computer)
Now when i restarted my computer i canŠt log into windows since there seems to be systemfiles missing, Strange....
So CCP how did this happen to me?
Yes i blame you since i have not intalled anything else today, and something made some important files go boom, and system reset doesnŠt help.
IM now typing this from my laptop since i canŠt use my stationary computer at this time.
Another question is: Will it help if i use a windows cd and try repair it? (for the record i donŠt have one laying around atm)
Thank you for a ruined evening...

Like alot of eve players I know, I am a huge computer enthusiast. I know my way around a windows PC better than most people know their own glorious, naked body. That said, this error put the smack down on me big time, for a number of reasons. First the computer I happened to be using at the time was my folks compy that they use for work as well as pleasure. Second, the only OS backup/CD available to it was the type thats placed stricly as a clean slate reinstall on a hidden partition. Third, there was no other computer immediately available to assist in the process of reecovery. Lastly, I was leaving on a plane in seven hours for New York, so I had so pull an all-nighter fixing CCP's utter wreckage to get the computer running for the folks.
This is s massive black eye on you, CCP. I love your efforts and your work, but maybe this is an area you need betetr help with, in terms of released pacthes and install packages. This whole thing is bringing back memories of the RMR patch that crapped out my uber AGP video card, only to hear most people saying "no way" could a patch do such a thing. Go figure, I knew my suspicious weren't wildly off-base.
Anyways thats my whine and FFS I'm entitled to it.
People who aer looking for a way to access NTFS files from a C: prompt, please look into (google) NTFS4DOS, its one way to bypass the lock that file system puts down on files without proper windows login credentials. However, be aware that alot of the suggestion people are giving about writing or editting or otehrwise manipulating thosefiles may not be available to you as a range of commands will be absent, or require a different operating environment. Its likely Linux in some form could help you mount the drives/files, but its not certain it will help anyways. If you're like me and have a very specific boot.ini file, guessing at a working one will be problematic.
But with a little research on the NTSF4DOS abilities and using copy commands, you ought to be able to make emergency backups of your important files to oterh media. And then, yah, perform a complete OS reinstall, normally with the cntrl-f11 keys at boot in the case of Dell computers.
That was the only way I could do it, givin what i had at hand and the amount of time there was to do the work.
GL fellow players. Black eye on you CCP, I'm sorry the uberness of Trinity ended up being overshadowed by this disgusting mess.

Originally by: Helldrek Demonstar I'm running xp media edtion and seem to be unaffected as well. Any techies got reasons for this?
Because if your windows partition is in a typical configuration (first partition, first hard disk) you don't need a boot.ini to load windows? I've certainly never had one on my installation (no boot.ini tab in msconfig either).
This thread is a serious tl;dr so it's bound to be posted somewhere, but:
Originally by: Wikipedia page for boot.ini NTLDR requires, at the minimum, the following two files to be on the system volume: NTLDR, which contains the main boot loader itself, and boot.ini, which contains configuration options for a boot menu. To load an NT-based OS, ntdetect.com must also be present. (Strictly speaking, only NTLDR is actually required. If boot.ini is missing, NTLDR will default to C:\Windows on the first partition of the first hard drive. Many desktops in the home are in this configuration and a missing boot.ini file will simply generate an error stating it is missing, then boot into Windows successfully.)
There's probably rather a lot of people that are getting unecessarily panicked by not having a boot.ini file...

Ok my boot.ini is safely stashed on my USB stick and the full premium is downloaded an hour ago. Not the upgrade patch but the whole 1.2 gig lock stock and barrel. I have winXP SP2 and from what I gather i this, rather long, thread it should be completely safe to uninstall my current Eve installation and install this new one.
But still, dare I risk it...., or should I just wait a couple of days. I actually could get some sleep in the process. --- He took a Duck in the face at 250 knots... |

Pool of Radiance. The initially pressed disks would cause the game to uninstall system files when the game was uninstalled http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pool_of_radiance#Pool_of_Radiance:_Ruins_of_Myth_Drannor
Final Fantasy XI also had a patch that caused systems to go down I believe
Either DAoC or EQ, I forget which. A virus had infected the patch server, and a trojan was being doled out with the patch for a good. Fortunately it was caught quickly and few were infected.
So kindly, please, STFU yourself. ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?" "It's a lot like being a walking house that eats lettuce." (Hurray temp sig!) |

Yes, Kahin, I got my XP media edition working. I downloaded this file and burned it onto a CD and it worked. When the comp recognizes the CD it gives simple options like, "try this first; try this second." Mine worked on "try this third." No techie knowledge needed beyond burning the CD.

suing ccp will be a waste of time. You will just loose more money trying to bring them to court on this. And if you think I'm full of **** go ahead and sue them and then let me know if you win or loose and how much it cost you.

Reasons this sucks particular for many american users:
Dell does not provide OS disks with their machines. You can order them from Dell, but being without a machine however many days it takes Dell to send them out can be a PITA. Usually with an expansion, only the game is unplayable for a while. Now EVERYTHING is unplayable until I can scrounge an install disk off someone or Dell gets around to sending me one. Luckily, I've located one I can borrow this evening, and will have "only" lost 24hours use of my computer. Thank God I didn't have anything more important I wanted to do with it than play games, this is end of semester for the school people out there.
Dell sells a lot of machines. Those users who don't have a web browser at work to check the forums don't even know what the fix is- and since Dell, like CCP, tends to do their communicating online, they will get to talk to some support guy in India to try to figure out how to get their machine working again, or shell out to Best Buy's IdiotSquad, which will probably reformat and reinstall.
You think you've gotten angry comments so far- wait a few days until the people WITHOUT the technical knowledge of some who have posted so far and had to pay RL cash to someone to get their box back up start getting online again.

try this instead and keep clicking check booth path until you have one that works:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(5)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(5)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(5)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
If this doesn't work your best chance is a system restore, or you can try doing a search for boot.ini and see if you have a backup.

I booted from original XP (SP1) install disc. When disk is in bay, and Mac booted alt-pressed, booting from xp-cd is as third option. I first tried to boot from self made XP+SP2 install disk, but it didn't have recovery option.
After that I followed instructions for those who are rebooted, and they worked. Attrib and del commands were not necessary for my case however.
