To everyone who lost their overview and other settings:
DON'T CLICK "LAUNCH EVE" FROM THE PATCH WINDOW. SELECT "FINISH", INSTEAD, then launch EVE manually. If you do this, your settings (or, at least, most of them) should remain intact.
As far as my patch experience goes, I've noticed a 10-20 FPS drop and also noticed some of the triangle asteroid belt or circular planet/moon icons disappear when you click a stack of multiple celestial objects.

Edited by: Lyra Sy on 13/03/2008 14:39:23 My full post is on page 4. But to recap from what I've read through out this thread:
If using the /end /LUA:off args in your shortcuts you lose your settings files because EVE now looks for them in EVE/settings and not EVE/cache/settings.
If using the default Trinity method you may have lost your settings because that folder has moved too. Now ccp creates a separate folder for each account/server combo that holds a cache and settings subdirectory. Very nice. You now don't have to worry about settings you used on the test server scrambling your regular playing account or one account crossing up the other. Just wish CCP had put that at the top of the patch notes.
In each case, you may need to hunt down your old settings files and copy them to the new directory.
Frame rate took a huge hit on the premium content side. I was down to 8 fps on each client. I'm doing fine now, but only because I had to revert back to classic graphics. I'm crossing my fingers that ccp can quickly resolve this issue. Part of the problem I'm guessing is that the station environment gets rendered anyway, even if you have it turned off (prelude necessity to a future ambulation patch perhaps? Or did the devs temp override this for testing and then forgot they did it? Who knows? I do know on the premium side I get the same fps whether docked or undocked since the patch.)
Also, there may be some new keymappings giving ppl trouble - I've not had problems with this so I've not investegated it myself. Some earlier complained of TS not working or their alt key not working. Mmm, my alt key doesn't work either per se but rather seems to be permanently on as I can now always see the icons over moons, planets, belts, etc. Time to play around with those overview tabs I guess. :)
So far both clients have been rock stable though no crashes here. So my best guess is its your graphics drivers. I've got an older graphics card with stable drivers and have never had crash problems with eve in all the years I've played.
Can this forum do polls? I'd really be interesting in seeing how many ppl got forced out of the premium content by the last patch -like I did.

Can't seem to be able to reach the patch download site. Not an FW or IP filtering issue on my end, might be DNS issue on ISP though. Anyone else have the same problem ?
If not, any kind souls have mirrors up ?

Originally by: Demuria I for 1 got lucky and only have a problem with pinned windows (the select window and my overview) being pushed off the top of the screen when the fleet window opens. In low sec this can be deady while reseting and re-pining.
I must say they will fix the problems we are having as fast as they can, they are after all human and no patch is ever 100%.
I do wonder why the Stealth Bombers cant use the Covert Ops Cloaking Device II as its description indicates its for frigate class covert ops ships and if this will be changed?
Nah no 100% but 50% will be nice ;P

This might be a solution to the problem with lost settings!
I think the patch has moved the setting to a folder below the usual settings:
A. Previous folder was: "C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE" B. After patch i have: "C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\d_ccp_eve_tranquility"
So the solution, i hope, would be to copy the "cache" and "settings" folders from the previous location A to new location B overwriting the files.
I think ccp did this to avoid the problem of several installations and test installations.
Use this information at your own risk!!

I didn't read through the whole thread so this might be redundant. having a couple problems:
(1)With the overview box, if I position it when flying a ship without drones then switch to a ship that has drones, the top of the overview box jumps up above the screen and can not be retrieved.
(2) An unrepeated issue with the industry view. Selected a location and tried to get a list of available lines but the lines box never updated. Client had to be exited and reentered to work.

Edited by: Onashinnen on 13/03/2008 15:03:51 Seems all this patch did was attempt to fix problems that arent there. I read the first page of responses, saw that there were at lest 10 more pages of people probably either agreeing that this patch just caused more problems than fix problems that weren't there, and I decided to not read them.
Quit making patches we dont need, and, for the love of all that is holy, at least get a coding patch to keep our settings when you do decide to mess with our gaming experience.

Are there ANY professional IT people working at CCP? I'm serious. (no pun intended).
Certainly you have a talented team of game designers, programmers, content developers, and artists, but do you have anyone that has worked as an IT professional in an environment where successful patch deployment is critical? I.e. Banks, hospitals, telephone companies, air traffic control?
Of course, Eve is only a game and perhaps successful patch deployment isn't as critical in the gaming industry as those mentioned above, but neither is it as difficult.
You can expect to have people complain about game changes no matter what you do. Everyone is different and you can't please them all. But you could save yourself much (deserved) grief if you hired a couple of IT pros for your QA and upgrade rollout team. ---- I am Super Cool

Indeed your spot on, although I learnt necver to start client after patch with launch option a few back , nice to see it still trash's settings.
I located my settings in the old cache folder and copied to new one and alas eve would start just be running in a 0x0 window as minimized was all it did. ANyhow I then trashed teh pc.dat settings file and all seems well. i say seems as you can never tell. I still get aurora trying to chat me up wereever I go stalking me like some nutter, but I think she is gradualy taking the hints, though a global "oi bitten NO" option would kinda be needed big-stylee before she fraggles my nerves.
Anyhow settings back+extra's :\. Still going to run with fresh reinstall as what I'm reading in the notes and what I'm seeing corrilates like sandpaper upon a babies bottom.

My biggest hope with this patch has not been realized - when will the MAC client support the Advanced Graphics content? CCP and Transgaming have promised the first quarter of 2008, but that will end in just a week or two.
Also, I will reiterate what EVERYONE else is whining about. The warp gates and jump bridges have lost graphic quality, some are non-existent. Overview settings are gone, again - why doesn't this stuff import during the patch process? One interesting note that I noticed, don't know if anyone else noticed - when warping to 0 on a warp gate, the overview loses focus and the jump button doesn't highlight when in jump range. Those of us that live (and die) by beating gate camps in 0.0 sec. will lose when it comes to this. You need to click the overview box and/or click the gate again, even if it's already highlighted, to activate the icons for jumping. Is this because of the new tabbed overview?
- It would be nice to have a feature in the settings window to turn off/on all welcome/hint screens for those of us who have been around the game for awhile. Seeing those on EVERY window and clicking the don't show again box is getting old. But what if you wanted to see them again(for some odd reason)? The per window check boxes are just to turn them off.
I am a programmer myself and these little things are what always seem to get overlooked.
Kudos though for the new Logoff button in the status/settings screen. This is a bit quicker for those of us with multiple characters and swapping them! All-in-all, CCP has made a great game and I will continue to play. I would love to see, as I'm sure everyone will agree, the (hopefully) soon-to-be-added "walkabout" environments with added character interaction!!

Not sure what happened to ALL these friggin people but, my patch went fine. Still got all my overview settings, all my bookmarks, and as far as i can tell, I'm having no problems whatsoever.
Thanks for fixing up the apoc and zealot, and the new overview stuff is pretty sweet actually, some testing on warping into POS's proved pretty smooth on the grid load without all the guns drawn on my screen.
Market options are sweet too
All in all, the delay sucks, but it happens sometimes, patch is still full of great stuff, and EVE is still full of Emo (see 12 previous pages for proof)

What's so hard to believe that CCP would lose customers over these issues? As a customer, I've decided that CCP doesn't care to earn my business by providing a smooth patch experience that, at the very least, maintains my game settings and various user configurations.
If this patch had broken everything with the game mechanics, and my ship couldn't even fly through space, but my folders, settings, and preferences were still intact, I wouldn't have closed my account. That is how important this recurring issue is to me.
I was paying to play the game, not repeatedly configure things I had setup dozens of times previously.

Alas the only realy good QA I know of in software is the approach by airospace and the like. But I've seen Medical systems crash, be poorly designed and expliotable just as much as I have seen bank systems.
Couple of examples would be:
1) Blackberry - 2 major patch's - 2 mamor outages - QA - well debatable and they never did give a honest reply to the town hall meeting 2 years ago but hey, there profesional IT ....right.
2) Pacemakers than can be remotely tapped into and have no excryption - this week that one.
3) some small banmk called Hmmm HSBC would couldn't even keep there digital certificate updated, despite alot of measures to notify when it expires.
So when you say profesional IT people I cant but help think you dont actualy work in IT.
Now a user-base QA team who feedsback and get voted upon, that would appease alot of people. But what is the ossues is the lack of openess and also given CCP one of the more open companies you tend to see the issues or not.
That said I will say that patching and indeed the whole `QA` aspect needs a major shake-up, but please dont descriminate a profesional against a non-profesional or we would require comments like that to be profesional vetted. Are you a profesionaly qualified to comment :p. Define profesional and define IT and then look at the huge gaps that a project manager has to deal with and you see that IT reflects human interactions very well, flawed and buggy.

For all of you that lost the bookmarks and don't knwo how to get them back, here's what you can do: The IGB bookmarks are in a file called "bookmarksSites.txt" and it resides in your EVE cache folder's Browser subdirectory. Before the patch this was in "C:\Documents and Settings\XXX\Local Settings\CCP\EVE\cache\Browser" for XP or "C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\cache\Browser" on Vista. Either copy the entire file or copy the content from there into the new cache folder, which is now under a name that resembles your game install path under the "C:\Documents...\CCP\EVE\" directory.
Hope this helps. It worked for me. |

Well, I finally patched EvE, and had no problems to speak of. Of course, I only tried it for a few minutes and only travelled through a couple of systems.
Good points:
# Overview tabs are great, but I found them very confusing to set up. I'd also like to have control over the "default" tab, but that's no biggie, all things considered.
# Load time drastically reduced all round - good job on that one!
# A "Log Off" button has been added to the ESC menu, which only takes you to the Login screen instead of quitting to desktop - great job there!
Bad points:
# Engine sounds are back for me...and after listening to them for 2 minutes, I can understand why people play EvE without any sound whatsoever.
So you can count me in the "not going to kill CCP staff over latest patch" group of players. |
