I don't see why people moan. CCP will be loosing more money than they are gaining for this, and to be honest ignoring the character farmers how many people will be effected that much in the grand playerbase i.e. more than just the forums.
And before people go l2p or call me a noob or whatever, I have been playing for five years, only missing out a single month when finances disallowed me.
Exactally - you've been playing for five years and have a boatload of SP. Chances are that there's not much you can't do, not many ships that you can't fly. Try telling a new player that he's going to have to wait three years to pilot a capital ship and see just what they have to say..
I would tell them to suck it up and pay for it, as I said I only missed a single month, even then it caught me out of the blue and I didn't have anything training. And I don't pay by isk either.

It is logical (and, as CCP stated - fair) to not let characters advance if the account is not payed.
Training your character while the account is in an inactive state was more or less "free game time" from CCP to us. And now everyone feels entiteled to getting free stuff? Yeah, that's how it works.
CCP making money? Oh noes!!1111one

Edited by: Clay101 on 13/10/2008 17:53:51 CCP, this is the most bullshit excuse you have used to date to make more money. In all honesty, I'm fine with the change, but be honest with your community. I have put up with your bullshit for the last 5 years and I'm tired of it. Be honest with us, we know the truth anyway.
In NO way does it "upset the balance" for people to "ghost train". It's the same thing for me to train a 30 day skill on an alt and then not log that character in except that you get paid if I keep that character up to date on subscription time.
Why don't you fix something worthwhile instead of trying to grab every last penny you can from your users?

Originally by: DigitalCommunist I just realized, this is probably going to cost you as much money as it recovers.
A huge part of the reason many people get a third or fourth account is because they don't need to have all of them active at the same time, and you're not paying as much money while they skill up to be useful. Now you hit diminishing returns sooner, and all those multi-account *****s will rethink things.
At the same time, people who take a break from the game were more compelled to come back when they know they haven't been penalized for it. Now people who take a break are going to have their avatar affinity taken down a notch or two.
In the past I enjoyed playing another "main" in another corp, knowing this main wasn't getting hurt as a result of my temporary deviance. I've trained up 3-4 characters from scratch because it this made things easier. I'm down to one account from a max of three or four, but I always thought that option was still open to me in the future. I don't think that's the case anymore.
CCP, you don't "get" EVE anymore.
what he sayd also what chribba sayd chalck a soon reactivated account as one that will come out that lovely feature that distinguished this game from other ones also it sort of balanced the fact out that skill training isnt realy training its just an extreme amount of time ticking down
whats the next absolutly needed feature gona be stoping skilltraining when you logg out ?
seriously CCP please spend time thinking about what makes people happy i think that should fill your pockets more efficiently than with things **** people off

Edited by: RedSplat on 13/10/2008 17:55:12 Oh good, another change to the game that benefits players and doesnt contribute to lining ccp's pocket.
On the other hand i bought WAR recently and that seems to have a competent team of developers that listen to player feedback.
Bye EVE
Edit: was this anounced and/or put to the community AT ALL before today?

The fact that the skill training is done in Real Time totally defeats the purpose of nerfing Ghost Training.
If this was WoW or PW, it would be ok, Level up by killing mobs, but the fact I have to pay $60 dollars to finish Battleship Lvl 5 is redonKYlous!
This is a videogame CCP, we play to escape reality.

This? Really? This is actively promoting the ebayization of capital accounts, which should justifiably be banned if detected.
A new player isn't going to have the kind of scratch to 'trade' in the forums for a cap pilot account, nor would they have the mental acuity to use one properly. Tell the new player that by the time they can afford to trade for a capital alt, they'll hopefully have the experience to fly one without embarassing their alliance.

Originally by: EyeCeeYou I'm surprised there's so much hatred over this. Seems pretty sensible to me - if you want to "play" (and that includes training), you gotta pay.
How about we change skill training to require clicking something every minute or so to get SP? Let's not do it in a half-assed way.
Quote:
Why would anyone expect that they could say "oh hey look, I've got 30 days for my BS-5 training, I'll unsub and just resub after a month ..." And why would anyone expect a company to say "hey, its ok, stop paying, just come back after you get that skill you want ...."
Because companies actually want people to come back and if the player thinks he doesn't like the game enough to keep playing while training BS5, then removing the incentive to come back at all is a bad idea.
Quote:
??? Greed is certainly at play here but I'm not sure it's CCP's ...
No it must be the players who have been doing it for 5 years before CCP "noticed".
Really, it's probably the large number of cancelled subscriptions these days and CCP trying a desperate move to counter that.

Very bad idea, a lot of people who quit the game have the chance to come back because their accounts are still training.. you can't remove this and become more similar with other games because eve doesn't have an active skill training. -

^^^^^^^^^^ [Edit: LOL!!! Ha! Ha! No one's going to read anything I say after that! They'll still be to busy laughing!]
OK ...
First off, all my accounts are active and always have been.
However ...
What you (CCP) have just done is **** away a gigantic chunk of player good will.
I was just telling my brother the other day that you didn't even cut people's training off when their subscriptions lapsed. Ooops.
You see, allowing things like that made you look like you weren't like all the other game companies who existed solely to **** their customers.
Now you look like all those other game companies.
And of course - in joining the other game companies - you lie to us about why you are doing it.
No one believes you are doing this to protect the balance of the game and those who "actively put their time and energy into working on their characters". No one.
You're doing this to try to make those people who are canceling their subscriptions so they can save some money while that character trains a long skill pay more money.
That's not going to happen. They'll just cancel the accounts.
The economy is in the tank and people just don't have the money to maintain more accounts than they are maintaining now.
Money wise - it isn't going to make any difference either. For everyone who brings an account back on line, there will be one who quits. So you aren't actually going to help yourselves there.
All you've done is **** away some good will. Nothing more.

Please try to explain this a bit better. How are people actually putting their energy and time into clicking on a skill? Since skills train automatically without any actual practice.
I believe if this will be implemented, EVE will not just lose a lot of players but a unique feature which made it attractive among other MMO's.
As most of the times, now you fail again to give a satisfactory argument, why you change something what everyone liked in this game. Why don't you just say that you need more money?
agreed about the more money issue. besides their codebase must be nearing it's end so they're prolly trying to get the last money out of it. :D

So name one MMO developer that lets your character progress while your account is frozen then?
Every current MMO that lets you progress in real time instead of with grinding does this. Still.

Oh ffs! All this bleating that some of you have been caught out doing what anywhere else would be termed taking advantage (or even cheating!)
[i]"The ghost training is one of the points why many players play this game"{/i]
Er .. news for you. If someone is 'ghost training' then THEY AREN'T PLAYING THE GAME! Self evident!
All this arguing about people saying they'll take their accounts away? Good! They aren't actually playing with the accounts so nobody will miss them, right? Speaking as someone who has *always* seen this as an inherent unfairness in the Eve system - that people could get something for nothing - I'm very pleased it is ending.

Originally by: Hertford This is a pretty big gamble. You're hoping that out of all of the accounts that ghost train at about half-price, more than half of them will become fully paid. Yes, you stand to gain if more than half sub fulltime, but you're setting up for a decrease in subs if less than half pay up.
If you wanted more money, you'd have way more success by doing something like allowing people to double-pay for a given period, during which time they train skills twice as fast. If no-one bites on that, you lose nothing. If some people bite, you gain. No gamble involved.
I don't think that's the idea - they just want to make the subscription cancelling that is going on these days to hurt more.

Originally by: Black Cumin This is an unnecessary nerf. This "ghost training" affects all players the same way. There is no advantage or reason for doing this, and it is a very good feature to have in game. Since it affects everyone the same way, everyone can count on being able to do this when they decide for whatever reason to do this. By taking this out of the game you: 1) Give all old players, 5 years and older, a huge advantage of being able to do this. All new characters will not be able to.
Indeed, new players now will be gimped for eternity now! Now that is unfair to New subscribers, which means potential money for YOU CCP!

This is a great idea, but it could be better. When your account goes inactive, in addition to not training, all your clones should lose their implants! Also, characters should be fined a large percentage of their total assets while inactive. That way, if they ever decide to come back they won't have squat. This is brilliant, because then they will have to buy GTC to get all their precious iskies back!!!!!1111

that pretty much was one of the best things about this mmo - even if i had no time to play (or money to pay) i could just wait a little and my char was better (!). that was a good or even a VERY good reason to re-subscribe, return to the game.
I believe it would have been better to make a reason for players to return even after brakes rather than show them that it's just another mmo. as long as you're active you get the benefits. When will it become SP gain only when logged in or SP gain only on things you actively use... :(
