How is it not free? If the account is inactive for 2 months and you log in after the 3rd month because the training is done, you've had 3 months of no paying on the account. So, you had to pay $15 to reactivate the account. In the mean time, you've gotten xxxx number of skill points for $15 that cost me $60.
Sure looks to me like you got 3 months of training for free.
"Cheaper" does not equal "free". If your reality does not agree, I have a bridge for sale.
1 month paid. 3 months free. vs. 4 months paid.
You're almost there, you're so close! Now, let's break that down... oh wait we can't because you can only get that free time by paying for the not-free time. So, it's not free, merely cheaper. Got it? * personal attack redacted - CCP Fallout
Typical of a spin doctor. You rip someone off and you say its for their own good.
Dude, if this was your business, how would you feel if you had 200,000 subscribers who paid their monthly fees and enjoyed the game the way it was meant to be played, but had 25,000 who used a loophole to get 3 months free? You'd feel like those 25,000 people were stealing from you and you'd do everything in your power to close that loophole.
This is a pure business decision. Those of you who are complaining about it amaze me and make me wonder if you've ever run a business at all. Customer service is an issue with CCP. But if EVE shuts down because of cash flow problems at CCP from not collecting the proper amount on every account, then what would you say? You sure as hell wouldn't think it was your fault. You'd think it was CCPs.

Aim for 1 character? Ofcourse not.
What they'll get though might be very close to that
Since this is obviously not a balance or fairness issue, I wonder which genious ran the numbers and came up with the fact that it would be a sound business decision.... haha. Boink! |

It's nice that one department in CCP considers these important issues that directly affect the majority of the playerbase and takes comprehensive and exhaustive actions to rectify them in a prompt and efficient manner. Bravo.

I didn't realize it was possible to "actively put []time and energy into working on [skills]". Someone from CCP should try to explain that one. The upcoming change is unnecessary, unwanted, and removes one of (if not the) incentive to returning players.
I'd live with 50% training speed while inactive, best of one worst worst of the other.

I only pay for playing. If I don't have time to play, I won't pay. Training is not playing, it is not connected. If it was, you won't train while logged off.

Originally by: Mora Makur So I see people presuming this is about money, then saying that they will lose money. If anything, this probably tells me that this might actually be about balancing the game and NOT about money.
If they were any serious about game balance they'd go for GTCs for ISK and character for ISKs first.
They don't, because both of those bring them more money.
I'm perfectly OK with the change, it's their game, they do whatever they want with it. It's the lying about the reasons, aka treating me like I am an imbecile, that leaves a very sour taste. CCP shows no respect whatsoever to the player community, that's the most important issue to me.

You just know that right now they're going to be brainstorming ways to 'put a positive spin' on this, even if it's dishonest.
I expect a blog like:

We're doing this purely to streamline skill training so that it's a level playing field for all, this will also ensure our database doesn't have any bad entries bla bla bla bullshit

What the f***?
So you're telling us you can nerf the ghost training, that's "long overdue" and not give us the possibility of skill-queing or a primary and secondary skill to train that we waited for for YEARS now?
Now that's pure greed and doesn't reflect well with me... I guess it's settled: As long as it's about cash, CCP will spring to action... If it's about players, the couldn't care less...

Check some of the people who announced they were canceling their account(s) and try to see through killboards or forum posts what became of their firm intentions. So far all of them are still very much active.
also interesting that one needed 2 months to reach 33 pages instead of hours

I am not a powergamer. I have One main account and a second account that I subscribe when I feel I need another character to get things done. This will essentially make it impossible for me to justify having that second character active. This will not force me to keep the character subscribed, rather he will sit Idle for extremely long periods of time without being subscribed. Previously I would re-up the account just because I knew a skill had finished training. Now there will be no such motivation.
For me, and many others, one of the main attractions of EVE was the fact that there was less of a penalty for not being a power-gaming 2004 character. This change erases that. I do not mind paying for one account regularly, but I won't pay for another character on a monthly basis. It is just a line I won't cross.
Claiming that it is 'unfair' to paying players to let Idle characters train is silly because many of those idle, training characters belong to active customers. The people who go inactive on their main account while training a skill are not that committed to the game anyway. They have a hard time justifying paying for even the one character they have, so how will this help? I have never met an EVE player who felt cheated by the fact that you can train a character while idle. Never one.
CCP if your intention is to get more cash flow with this change, it will not work. It will probably result in exactly the opposite.

I think this is going to make CCP loose subscriptions. I know a lot of people that plays off an on, but when they re-start playing they are happy because they have some new and fresh skill at lvl 5 because "ghost training".

I'll call you an idiot now, though- get out of your mother's basement and consider why you could possibly be against your fellow players and with the corporation on this.
You're either in CCP, want to fellate them, or...I don't even know.
You are only an idiot if you namecalled. As mentioned!
Also, I am not working with CCP, and dont want to "fellate" with them. I do like them however for their good game, just as much as I liked SOE while they had their pre-cu SWG!
But this is stupid! No other online game on the market allows players to earn ingame stuff while not playing! AND PAYING! And so it should be! If you cant afford playing, thats fine! The game will be waiting for you when you return, and as you left it! That is fair to the PLAYERBASE!!!!! WHO DO PAY! To be honest, it is YOU who dont support the fellow players by letting others earn ingame value while not paying!
So yes, it IS a good move! Its called fairness to those of us who pay 15 dollar a month!

I think the people that are whining about this need to get a grip. Please. Everyone saying that they are going to go to other games needs to stop and ask whether those other games are going to allow them to advance without paying for an account. If the answer is no, then stop acting like CCP is some kind of ogre for asking you to actually pay for a sub to advance your character. You still advance while you are offline, so what's the big issue?
I mean, really. A service company that expects you to PAY if you want to use their service. How shocking!

Edited by: Trinneth on 13/10/2008 20:57:50 A few months back with much trumpeting, the Council of Stellar Management was unveiled, they would represent the players, help CCP to decide how to prioritise their efforts to make the game better for all of us.
They went all the way to Iceland to discuss with CCP the direction they'd like to see the game take, and the number one item on their agenda was indeed a long overdue and much needed change regarding skills.
But it wasn't skills training while an account was inactive. It was skill queueing. In fact, there're almost no posts complaining about skills training on inactive accounts, because by and large this is a positive thing.

From the Dev Finder: PrismX reassures players that the future of CCP and EVE Online is not at risk due to the financial issues facing Iceland.
I wonder if this change is why they think they won't have financial problems? "Removing ghost training will convert all unsubscribed accounts into precious american dollars! Let's do it now! Nothing can go wrong!"

It's obvious that CCP thinks that this will keep people subscribed. What they are missing is that being able to unsub when you are bored, broke or away on vacation and continue to train is part of what KEEPS PEOPLE COMING BACK. When you unsub but continue to train, you maintain a connection to the game, and get a little reward for resubbing...you get to use the new skill!
By removing this CCP is removing one of the best player retention features that they have. They are really shooting themselves in the foot.
