People running 'ghost accounts' do indeed pay. Just not 100% of the time. If someone is paying for only 3 months out of every 6, they're still paying. Ghost Training isn't free, merely cheaper.
So you pay for 3 months and you get 3 months training (and playing time). makes sense.

what's wrong is that eve is a pretty shitty game at times, so plenty of us normal people here in the real world (where life is not about constantly fellating an mmo publisher) get tired of the crap it throws our way or things in real life come up and we take extended breaks, usually after a final act of setting a long skill training. typically we have the bad taste of our irritating last few days of eve in our mouth whenever we think about it, so we have no interest in coming back. then evemon goes *ding* and we remember we had battleship/carrier/asc/whatever V training, and we realize our character's still been advancing and suddenly the interest level goes up so we bother to resubscribe and have just enough fun to keep us going for a few more months until we get sick of CCP's shit once more and start the whole process over again.
this is one of an increasingly few ways in which eve is unique, and one of the reasons eve has one of the most consistent and loyal subscriber bases of any mmo. the same people keep coming back to play this game over and over, and they wouldn't be doing that if their character stopped dead every time their subscription ran out.
you are what we call a 'short-term thinker', much like the marketing or accounting dude at CCP who thought this change would positively affect their bottom line.

I was under the impression this was already this way... Infact I remember reading this in patch notes over a year ago.

Exactly my thoughts. I never thought of it as customer service, but now that I think about it, it was (is?) one of the finest perks of this game.
I think the working adults are the ones most ****ed off by this change, since they don't have the luxury of infinite time to enjoy the game.

This idea is absolute garbage and yet I am not at all surprised it is being implemented. Any sensible person, committee or company would have dismissed it shortly after it was even conceived in a meeting.
I really hope this causes subscribed accounts to plummet drastically with no offsetting character transfer revenue.
P.S. Could anyone suggest an MMO whose "stewards" actually know WTF about how their game is played, and do not hate their player base? |

True, at the time it was an error in patchnotes that creeped in form the Chinese Server. There was huge outcry at the time and we got reasured that it wasnt us just china.

A short story :
I know you dont care about my life (and it is not my duty :) ) but this story will show you all how CCP trying to get more money, may lose even more :
I used to ghost train and I totaly asume this.
Why ?
Because ghost training allow(ed) me to keep 3 acounts "active".
1 account full time and 2 alts account 2/3 of the time.
Why did I no longer pay my 3 acconts full time ?
Money :
Before I had 3 accounts full time and was paying GTC90 for $60 each month.
This sum whas ok for me and was happy to pay it for a quality game as Eve Online is.
Few time ago, CCP change GTCs :
no more GTC90, only GTC60 payable in euro (living in Çuro zone).
After that, had to pay 52Ç each mounth (rounded).
You'll say $60 vs Ç52, it's ok...
But for those who dont know the change rate at this momment Ç52 was equal to $80-$90... (little bit less today : $70).
This whas too much for me :
So that I decided to ghost train 2 of my 3 account.
This allowed me to save 10 to 15Ç each mounth depending on the skill I could train.
52Ç minum 10Ç (rounded) = 40Ç (rounded) = $55 (rounded) ghost training alowed me to spend same money as before for same result in SP. And considering I only play 2 charac in same time, there where no problem.
Now, I'll abandon my 3rd account and move my 3rd character to 2nd account.
CCP wanted more money ?
I'll pay only 2 account instead of 3 (35Ç/month tomorow instead of 60$ before).
One of my character will no longer train skills but I'll save more money, thx CCP 
As final word I'm playing Eve since 4 years, paying 3 accounts since 3 years and ghost training 2 of them since few mounths I dont feel "unfair" regarding other capsuleers who "actively put their time and energy into working on their characters".
On my mind, CCP is also trying to get more money (crisis is world whide and a perfectly understand this).
However this will fail with me, sorry.

Can anyone point to any article or points to explain why this is 'a long overdue change'???
Also why is it 'much needed'? Needed by who? The players? I don't think so as I can't fathom any player who would want this - unless those who are jealous of people afk-training.
I am really curious as to how this benefits anyone at all apart from CCP money-wise (no this is not a jab but a serious comment).
This is similiar to the change where they stopped the 'more you use the action the more you level the relevant skill' back in the first 1-2 years of Eve.

Well I for one an indifferent ont his change. I don't 'ghost' train.
I always thought this was a bug really. If it were my game I wouldn't allow training if you weren't paying either.
Holy crap, Eve players are way *****y. Reminds me of the Curzon Dax song 'Forum Whiner's Unite'. You guys should go listen to that and keep in mind the song is about you.
BTW, if you're going to quit over this, please send me your isk and contract me your stuff.

Yeah they do, they have to pay to start up a new skill don't they? And with the removal of 30day GTC, people would have to pay 35$ to play for 60 days, then let their account deactivate for another 30 days. Many people will not reactivate their account to continue their skill training now, thus lost subscribers. Also, it will encourage many people to quit Eve. I know lots of players that are only paying and playing the game because of 'Ghost training', they will just leave permanently. CCP made this move in hopes that these people will subscribe fully, but instead it will make them leave in droves. Personally, one of my accounts will be put on permanent hiatus because of this.
